1 Ó Israel, não te regozijes mais, como os outros fazem, pois afastaste-te do teu Deus, prostituindo-te em todas as eiras de trigo.

2 Eis que a eira e o lagar não vos sustentarão; o vinho novo vos faltará. 3 Não poderão mais ficar nesta terra do Senhor; serão levados para o Egito e para a Assíria, passando a viver de restos de comida imunda. 4 Ali, longe da pátria, não vos deixarão recolher vinho para os sacrifícios ao Senhor, porque nenhum sacrifício que seja oferecido ali pode agradar-lhe; são sítios poluídos, tal como o alimento dos pranteadores; seja quem for que coma disso ficará ritualmente impuro; poderão comer para si próprios, mas não para ofertas ao Senhor.

5 Que farão no dia de celebrações santas, nos dias das festividades do Senhor? 6 Eis que eles fogem da destruição, mas o Egito os recolherá; mas Menfis enterrá-los-á. Depois apenas se verão crescer espinhos e urtigas por entre as ruínas.

7 Chegou o tempo do castigo de Israel; está quase aí, o dia da recompensa, e Israel conhecê-lo-á em toda a sua extensão. "Os profetas são gente louca, esses inspiradores estão doidos!", dizem eles com ar de troça, mas toda a nação está carregada de pecado e só sabe mostrar ódio por aqueles que amam a Deus.

8 O profeta é a sentinela de Deus em Efraim, mas esse povo está contra ele e a cada momento declara-lhe publicamente a sua raiva, até mesmo na casa do seu Deus. 9 As coisas que o meu povo faz são tão depravadas como o que fizeram há tempos atrás em Gibeá*9.9 Refere-se a eventos descritos em Jz 19–20.. O Senhor não se esquece disso e com certeza que dará o castigo merecido.

10 "Como recordo esses primeiros dias, deliciosos como cachos de uvas no deserto, quando eu, o Senhor, encontrei Israel! Como o vosso amor era refrescante como os primeiros figos no verão! Mas depois fugiram de mim para Baal-Peor, entregando-se a outros deuses, e tornaram-se tão abomináveis quanto aquilo que amaram. 11 A glória de Efraim vai-se como se se tratasse dum pássaro; os seus filhos morrerão à nascença ou perecerão ainda no ventre da mãe; outros nunca chegarão a ser concebidos. 12 E aqueles que conseguirem crescer, tirá-los-ei da sua guarda; todos estão condenados. Sim, será um dia bem triste, esse em que os deixarei e ficarão sozinhos. 13 Vi Efraim, tal como Tiro, plantado num lugar aprazível, mas Efraim deixará os filhos serem levados para o matadouro."

14 Ó Senhor, o que darás a esse povo? Dá-lhe ventres maternos que não deem à luz, seios que não possam alimentar.

15 "Toda a sua maldade começou em Gilgal; ali comecei a aborrecê-los. Expulsá-los-ei da minha casa por causa da sua idolatria. Não mais os amarei, porque os seus chefes são rebeldes. 16 Efraim está condenado; a sua raiz está seca; não dará mais fruto; se chegar a dar à luz filhos, matarei esses seus filhos amados."

17 O meu Deus destruirá o povo de Israel, por não terem querido dar ouvidos e obedecer à sua voz. Andarão errantes sem pátria entre as nações.

7 The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred.*9.7 spiritual…: Heb. man of the spirit 8 The watchman of Ephraim was with my God: but the prophet is a snare of a fowler in all his ways, and hatred in the house of his God.*9.8 in the: or, against the 9 They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah: therefore he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins. 10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to Baal-peor, and separated themselves unto that shame; and their abominations were according as they loved.

11 As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird, from the birth, and from the womb, and from the conception. 12 Though they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, that there shall not be a man left: yea, woe also to them when I depart from them! 13 Ephraim, as I saw Tyrus, is planted in a pleasant place: but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the murderer. 14 Give them, O LORD: what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.*9.14 miscarrying: Heb. that casteth the fruit 15 All their wickedness is in Gilgal: for there I hated them: for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of mine house, I will love them no more: all their princes are revolters. 16 Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb.*9.16 the…: Heb. the desires 17 My God will cast them away, because they did not hearken unto him: and they shall be wanderers among the nations.
