1 Quando Israel era uma criança, amei-o, e do Egito chamei o meu filho. 2 Mas quanto mais chamava por ele mais rebelde se tornava, sacrificando a Baal e queimando incenso a ídolos. 3 Eduquei a Efraim, desde a infância, ensinei-o a andar, segurei-o com os meus braços. Mas ele não se deu conta de que era eu quem curava e cuidava dele.

4 Conduzi-o com laços de amor, com laços de muita humanidade. Fui como o dono dum animal que lhe tira o jugo, para que possa comer à vontade. Eu mesmo lhe dei de comer. 5 Mas o meu povo acabará por voltar para o Egito e para a Assíria porque se recusou voltar para mim.

6 A guerra rondará as suas cidades; os seus inimigos acabarão por cair em peso sobre os portões de entrada e fechá-los-ão nas suas próprias fortalezas. 7 Porque o meu povo está decidido a deixar-me. Embora clamem ao Altíssimo, de maneira alguma me adoram.

8 Oh! Mas como te poderia eu deixar, Efraim? Como poderei eu deixar-te ir embora? Como te poderia eu abandonar como a Admá e Zeboim*11.8 Cidades vizinhas de Sodoma e Gomorra que foram destruídas na mesma altura. Ver Dt 29.23.? O meu coração chora dentro de mim. Como eu desejo socorrer-te! 9 Não! Não te castigarei tanto quanto a minha ira me pede! Esta é a última vez que destruirei Efraim, porque eu sou Deus e não um homem. Eu sou o Deus santo que vive no meio de ti; não vim para destruir-te.

10 O povo seguirá o Senhor. Rugirei como um leão sobre os seus inimigos e o meu povo regressará, tremendo, das bandas do poente. 11 Como um bando de aves, virão do Egito, como pombas voando desde a Assíria. Instalá-los-ei de novo na sua pátria. Esta é uma promessa do Senhor.

12 Israel cerca-me com mentiras e com engano e Judá mantém-se insubordinado contra Deus, contra o Deus santo e fiel."

5 He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return. 6 And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels. 7 And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.*11.7 none…: Heb. together they exalted not

8 How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together. 9 I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city. 10 They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west. 11 They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria: and I will place them in their houses, saith the LORD. 12 Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints.*11.12 saints: or, most holy
