1 Efraim anda ao sabor do vento; corre atrás do vento de leste o dia todo e multiplica enganos e violência. Envia azeite para o Egito e faz aliança com a Assíria para obter auxílio. 2 Mas o Senhor também tem um contencioso com Judá. Jacob será igualmente castigado pelos seus maus caminhos. 3 Ainda no ventre de sua mãe segurou o calcanhar*12.3 A expressão segurou o calcanhar vem da raiz da palavra que deu o nome Jacob. Ver Gn 25.26. do seu irmão, a fim de suplantá-lo, e depois de adulto lutou contra Deus. 4 Sim, lutou com o Anjo e prevaleceu. Chorou e suplicou por uma bênção. Encontrou-se face a face com Deus em Betel e Deus falou-lhe; 5 o Senhor, o Deus dos exércitos; Senhor é o seu nome. 6 Oh! Volta para o teu Deus! Guia-te pelos princípios da justiça e do amor e coloca a tua dependência sempre no teu Deus.

7 Mas não. O meu povo é como aqueles comerciantes desonestos que vendem com balanças falsificadas e que amam a fraude. 8 Efraim vangloria-se: "Já estou rico, já fiz uma grande fortuna! Não encontrarão mal e pecado algum em mim, em todo o meu trabalho!"

9 "Eu sou o mesmo Senhor, o vosso Deus que vos livrou da escravidão do Egito; mas também sou aquele que vos mandará habitar em tendas, como fazem em cada ano, na festa dos tabernáculos. 10 Mandei-vos os meus profetas para vos advertirem com muitas visões, com muitas parábolas e sonhos."

11 Mas os pecados de Gilgal continuam a florescer da mesma maneira. Multiplicam-se os altares como sulcos abertos por charruas nos campos, os quais são usados para sacrifícios aos ídolos. Gileade também está cheia de loucos que adoram ídolos. 12 Jacob fugiu para Aram e serviu como pastor para obter uma mulher. 13 Então o Senhor tirou o seu povo do Egito por meio de um profeta que os conduziu e protegeu. 14 Contudo, Efraim provocou amargamente a Deus. O Senhor condená-lo-á à morte, como paga dos seus pecados.
