1 Ouçam, sacerdotes e todos os líderes de Israel! Ouçam, todos os membros da família real! Vocês estão condenados, porque enganaram o povo com ídolos em Mizpá e Tabor; puseram-lhe uma cova profunda no caminho, como ratoeira, 2 para o apanhar em Sitim. Não se esqueçam que irei ajustar contas com todos por aquilo que fizeram.

3 Tenho observado as vossas más ações. Israel, tu deixaste-me tal como a prostituta que abandona o seu marido; vocês estão profundamente corrompidos. 4 Não têm vontade, sequer, de se voltarem de novo para Deus, porque no vosso íntimo o espírito de adultério é muito forte e não vos deixa conhecer o Senhor.

5 É a vossa própria soberba que testemunha contra vocês, perante mim. Israel cambaleará sob o fardo da sua culpa e Judá igualmente cairá. 6 Por fim, acabarão por se chegar, com os seus rebanhos, com o seu gado, para sacrificarem a Deus, mas será demasiado tarde; não poderão encontrar o Senhor, que se esconderá deles e serão deixados sós. 7 Traíram a honra do Senhor, gerando filhos que não são seus. Por isso, as festas da lua nova os consumirão juntamente com todos os seus bens e propriedades.

8 Toquem o alarme! Façam soar as cornetas em Gibeá, Ramá e até Bete-Aven! Treme, terra de Benjamim! 9 Efraim tornar-se-á numa terra assolada. Isto que anuncio entre as tribos de Israel é coisa certa!

10 Os chefes de Israel são como aqueles que removem os marcos que limitam as terras. Por isso, derramarei a minha ira sobre eles como uma torrente de água. 11 Efraim será esmagado e destruído pelo meu juízo, visto que preferiu seguir miragens, ou seja, ídolos inúteis. 12 Serão destruídos como a traça faz com a lã. Farei desaparecer a força de Judá que se tornará como uma coisa podre.

13 Quando Efraim e Judá virem o estado em que ficaram, Efraim voltar-se-á para a Assíria, para o seu grande rei; contudo, em nada o poderá ajudar.

14 Dilacerarei Efraim e Judá como faz um leão com a sua presa. Mandá-los-ei para longe e impedirei que alguém venha em seu socorro. 15 Abandoná-los-ei e voltarei para o meu lugar, até que admitam a sua culpa e me busquem, pedindo auxílio. Basta apenas que a angústia comece e buscar-me-ão."
