1 Uma resposta delicada anula a irritação;

as palavras duras suscitam a cólera.

2 A língua dos sábios faz da aprendizagem uma alegria,

mas da boca dos insensatos só jorram disparates.

3 Os olhos do Senhor estão em toda a parte,

observando tanto os bons como os maus.

4 Uma palavra reconfortante é uma árvore de vida,

mas a do que fala perversamente logo traz desencorajamento.

5 Só os tolos desprezam a opinião dos pais;

uma pessoa prudente toma em consideração as suas sugestões e avisos.

6 Na casa do justo há um grande tesouro;

os rendimentos dos perversos trazem-lhes perturbação.

7 A boca dos sábios difunde conhecimento,

mas o coração dos insensatos não procede assim.

8 O Senhor repudia o culto e os sacrifícios dos perversos,

mas tem todo o prazer nas orações dos retos.

9 O Senhor detesta os feitos dos pecadores,

mas ama os que seguem a justiça.

10 Deus corrigirá severamente os que se desviam do bom caminho;

os que se revoltarem contra essa correção morrerão.

11 Se nem as profundezas do mundo dos mortos podem ocultar-se aos olhos do Senhor,

quanto mais o coração dos seres humanos!

12 Os escarnecedores nunca se chegam às pessoas com entendimento,

porque não gostam de ser repreendidos.

13 Um rosto alegre traduz a felicidade dum coração;

a aflição do íntimo reflete-se na expressão que apresenta.

14 As pessoas com discernimento estão sempre sedentas da verdade;

os insensatos engordam só com parvoíces.

15 Quando alguém está aflito, tudo lhe parece sombrio e mal;

um coração alegre vive sempre em festa.

16 É melhor viver com pouco, mas temer ao Senhor,

do que ser multimilionário e viver dia-a-dia com aflições.

17 Vale mais ter um simples caldo, na companhia daqueles que amamos,

do que a carne mais saborosa num ambiente de discórdia.

18 Um indivíduo irascível está sempre a levantar discussões;

o que lhe vale são as pessoas que sabem dominar-se,

para pôr um ponto final na contenda.

19 Para o preguiçoso, a vida é como um caminho cheio de espinhos;

os retos sabem fazer dela um caminho plano.

20 Um filho sábio procura dar alegria aos seus pais;

os insensatos desprezam a opinião deles.

21 Os pobres de entendimento ficam todos contentes com palermices;

as pessoas de juízo procuram ter uma conduta sensata.

22 Um empreendimento feito sem o conselho dos que conhecem o assunto falha;

são os muitos conselheiros que podem dar uma garantia de sucesso.

23 Toda a gente gosta de dar bons conselhos;

como é bom ser-se capaz de dizer aquilo que é preciso, no momento certo!

24 Para os que seguem a Deus, o caminho da vida é para cima,

deixando para trás o mundo dos mortos.

25 O Senhor destruirá a casa dos orgulhosos,

mas cuidará das posses das viúvas.

26 O Senhor aborrece solenemente os pensamentos dos pecadores,

mas tem todo o prazer nas palavras bondosas.

27 O dinheiro ganho desonestamente traz perturbação para toda a família;

mas quem aborrecer o suborno viverá.

28 Uma pessoa reta pensa antes de falar;

os maus são capazes de falar sem um mínimo de reflexão.

29 O Senhor está bem longe dos perversos;

quanto à oração dos justos, essa sim, ouve-a!

30 Um olhar feliz e uma boa notícia são coisas que dão felicidade;

as boas notícias renovam as forças.

31 Os que sabem aproveitar as críticas construtivas

virão a ser recebidos no meio de pessoas sensatas.

32 Quem rejeita a correção prejudica-se profundamente;

quem compreende a repreensão adquire ainda mais entendimento.

33 Temer ao Senhor e saber ser humilde

é o fundamento da sabedoria e da dignidade humana.
