sentámos-nos a chorar, pensando em Sião.

2 Nos salgueiros, que por ali havia,

pendurámos as nossas harpas.

3 Os que nos tinham feito prisioneiros

pediam-nos que cantássemos;

tinham-nos destruído e queriam que estivéssemos alegres.

Exigiam-nos: "Vamos, cantem-nos um cântico de Sião!"

4 Mas como era possível que cantássemos

se vivíamos exilados?

5 Se eu me esquecer de ti, Jerusalém,

então será melhor que a minha mão direita

deixe de tocar os instrumentos!

6 Que a língua se me pegue ao paladar,

se eu for capaz de me esquecer de ti, Jerusalém,

e se tu não fores toda a minha alegria!

7 Lembra-te, Senhor, do que esses edomitas fizeram,

no dia em que Jerusalém foi capturada.

"Arrasem-na! Arrasem-na inteiramente!", gritavam.

8 Ah! Babilónia, como hás de ser destruída!

Felizes os que te fizerem o mesmo que nos fizeste a nós!

9 Felizes aqueles que pegarem nos teus filhos

e os esmagarem nas pedras!
