1 Veio outra mensagem da parte do Senhor para mim, no quarto dia do nono mês*7.1 Mês de Quisleu. Entre a lua nova do mês de novembro e o mês de dezembro., que é o mês de Quisleu, no quarto ano do reinado de Dario.

2,3 Os judeus da cidade de Betel mandaram um grupo de gente, encabeçados por Sarezer, governador da casa real, e também Regem-Meleque, que vieram ao templo do Senhor em Jerusalém para implorar o favor do Senhor e para perguntarem aos sacerdotes e profetas sobre se devem continuar os seus costumes tradicionais de jejum e lamentações durante o quinto mês*7.2-3 Quinto mês. Mês de Abe e lembra o mês em que o templo foi destruído. de cada ano, como sempre fizeram.

4 Foi esta a resposta do Senhor dos exércitos: 5 "Pergunta a todo o povo e aos sacerdotes o seguinte: Durante estes 70 anos de exílio, quando jejuaram e choraram no quinto e sétimo mês, estavam realmente a fazê-lo para mim? 6 E mesmo agora, nas vossas santas festividades consagradas a Deus, estão a pensar em mim ou unicamente no que vão comer, nas pessoas com quem se vão encontrar e no prazer que vão ter? 7 Foram estas mesmas palavras que o Senhor disse por meio dos antigos profetas, quando Jerusalém era próspera e habitada, com suas cidades ao redor, quando o Negueve, toda a região sul e as planícies costeiras eram habitadas."

8 Veio ainda a palavra do Senhor dos exércitos a Zacarias: 9 "Diz-lhes que sejam honestos e justos, que não andem a meter cunhas a troco de dinheiro; que mostrem piedade e misericórdia cada um ao seu próximo. 10 Que não oprimam a viúva, nem o órfão, nem o estrangeiro, nem o pobre; que parem de tramar ciladas contra os outros.

11 Os vossos pais não quiseram ouvir esta mensagem. Voltaram-me as costas; puseram os dedos nos ouvidos para poderem ficar descansados. 12 Endureceram os corações como diamantes, só com medo de terem que aceitar a Lei que Deus, o Senhor dos exércitos, lhes tinha ordenado, que lhes revelara pelo seu Espírito através dos antigos profetas. Foi isso que fez cair sobre eles essa tamanha ira da parte de Deus.

13 Chamei por eles, mas recusaram ouvir-me. Por isso, quando clamaram por mim, afastei-me. 14 Espalhei-os, como se fosse um tornado, por entre as nações do mundo. A terra ficou desolada; já ninguém viaja sequer por ela. Aquela terra desejada está agora vazia, deserta!"

4 Then came the word of the LORD of hosts unto me, saying, 5 Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me? 6 And when ye did eat, and when ye did drink, did not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?*7.6 did not ye: or, be not ye they that 7 Should ye not hear the words which the LORD hath cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, when men inhabited the south and the plain?*7.7 Should…: or, Are not these the words*7.7 by: Heb. by the hand of

8 And the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah, saying, 9 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:*7.9 Execute…: Heb.
