1 Esta é a mensagem que Jeremias transmitiu a Baruque, no quarto ano do reinado de Joaquim (filho de Josias), depois dele ter escrito todas as mensagens que Jeremias lhe tinha ditado:2 Ó Baruque, o Senhor Deus de Israel diz-te:3 Disseste - Ai de mim! Não tenho eu já bastantes tristezas? E agora o Senhor ainda me acrescenta mais! Estou já cansado do meu próprio gemido e não acho descanso. Portanto diz assim a Baruque: O Senhor tem isto a dizer-te - Destruirei esta nação que eu próprio construí. Derrubarei o que eu próprio estabeleci.5 Estarás tu a procurar grandes coisas para ti mesmo? Não faças isso! Porque ainda que venha a trazer grandes males sobre todo este povo, proteger-te-ei onde quer que vás. Será esta a tua recompensa.

1 The word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch the son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying,2 This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, to you, O Baruch:3 You said, Woe is me now! For Yahweh has added sorrow to my pain; I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest.4 Thus you will say to him, Thus says Yahweh: Look, that which I have built I will break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up; and this in the whole land.5 And do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for, look, I will bring evil on all flesh, says Yahweh; but your life I will give to you for a prey in all places where you go.
