1 Uma mulher sabedora compreende como deve construir a sua casa, mas uma louca é capaz até de a destruir toda, à custa do seu desvario.2 A honestidade é coisa que honra o Senhor. O pecador que se desvia do seu caminho está a desprezá-lo.3 Nas palavras do louco germina o orgulho! Mas a fala do entendido é respeitada.4 Um estábulo vazio de animais permanece limpo. Mas o certo é que também com um estábulo limpo não há ganhos.5 Uma testemunha digna de confiança não mentirá. Uma falsa testemunha respira mentira!6 O escarnecedor nunca chega a encontrar a sabedoria de que diz andar à procura, ainda que esta chegue facilmente até às pessoas de bom senso.7 Se procuras conselhos, afasta-te da gente insensata.8 A sabedoria duma pessoa sensata manifesta-se preparando o futuro. O louco revela a sua insensatez enganando-se a si mesmo.9 Os loucos fazem pouco do pecado. Os que respeitam Deus conhecem-se pela sua vontade em fazer o bem.10 Só a própria pessoa sabe medir a amargura ou a alegria que lhe vai na alma. Os outros nunca poderão realmente compartilhar dos seus sentimentos.11 A casa dos que recusam Deus virá a ser destruída; enquanto que a habitação da gente recta florescerá.12 Diante de cada ser humano abre-se um caminho que parece ser uma via segura, mas que acaba por levar à morte.13 O riso pode esconder um coração amargurado. Acabada a alegria, a tristeza torna a vir ao de cima.14 O traidor acabará por ter nojo da sua falsidade; mas a vida dos rectos é cheia de interesse.15 Só os simplórios acreditam em tudo quanto se lhes diz. Um indivíduo sensato procura certificar-se das situações.16 Uma pessoa com entendimento é cautelosa. Os tolos atiram-se de cabeça, com toda a confiança, seja para onde for.17 Quem se irrita com facilidade vem sempre a fazer disparates, e naturalmente tende a aborrecer os que se controlam.18 Os simples recebem como herança a estupidez, mas os que têm discernimento têm em paga o conhecimento.19 Os maus e os pecadores virão certamente um dia a inclinar-se perante os justos.20 O pobre até pelos seus companheiros é desprezado, enquanto que os ricos têm muitos amigos.21 Desprezar o seu semelhante é um pecado. Abençoados serão os que se interessam pela situação dos mais desfavorecidos.22 Os que praticam o mal perdem-se na vida. Mas os que sabem fazer planos de bem terão em paga o bem e a tranquilidade.23 O trabalho traz ganhos. A muita conversa traz pobreza.24 Os sábios são louvados pelo seu entendimento. Os loucos são postos de parte por causa da sua insensatez.25 Uma testemunha de confiança que diz a verdade pode até salvar uma pessoa. Uma falsa testemunha é traição.26 Temer Deus dá ao homem grande força interior; e até os seus filhos encontrarão nisso protecção.27 O reverenciar o Senhor é uma fonte de vida; as suas águas livram da morte.28 Uma população que se desenvolve é a glória dos governantes; a sua redução é a ruína deles.29 Uma pessoa com entendimento sabe controlar o seu temperamento. Ela dá-se conta de que a irritação leva a muitos enganos.30 Um coração em paz prolonga a vida; mas a inveja faz apodrecer os ossos.31 Quem oprime os pobres e os fracos insulta o Criador dos homens. Ajudá-los é honrar Deus.32 Os pecadores serão expulsos por causa dos seus pecados; mas o justo, mesmo quando morre, encontrará um refúgio.33 A sabedoria está bem assente no coração das pessoas de bom senso. Contudo, para os loucos, ela tem de ser gritada bem forte, a fim de que possam ouvi-la.34 A justiça exalta as nações, mas o pecado faz miseráveis os povos.35 O rei alegra-se com aqueles que sabem o que devem fazer quando estão ao seu serviço. A sua cólera cairá sobre os que se tornam uma fonte de perturbações.

1 Every wise woman builds her house; But the foolish plucks it down with her own hands.2 He who walks in his uprightness fears Yahweh; But he who is perverse in his ways despises him.3 In the mouth of the foolish is a rod for [his] pride; But the lips of the wise will preserve them.4 Where no oxen are, the crib is clean; But much increase is by the strength of the ox.5 A faithful witness will not lie; But a false witness utters lies.6 A scoffer seeks wisdom, and it is not [found]; But knowledge is easy to him who has understanding.7 Go into the presence of a foolish man, And you will not perceive [in him] the lips of knowledge.8 The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way; But the folly of fools is deceit.9 A trespass-offering mocks fools; But among the upright there is good will.10 The heart knows its own bitterness; And a stranger does not intermeddle with its joy.11 The house of the wicked will be overthrown; But the tent of the upright will flourish.12 There is a way which seems right to a man; But its end are the ways of death.13 Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; And the end of mirth is heaviness.14 The backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways; And a good man [will be satisfied] from himself.15 The simple believes every word; But the prudent man looks well to his going.16 A wise man fears, and departs from evil; But the fool bears himself insolently, and is confident.17 He who is soon angry will deal foolishly; And a man of wicked devices is hated.18 The simple inherit folly; But the prudent are crowned with knowledge.19 The evil bow down before the good; And the wicked, at the gates of the righteous.20 The poor is hated even of his own fellow man; But the rich has many friends.21 He who despises his fellow man sins; But he who has pity on the poor, he is happy.22 Do they not err who devise evil? But mercy and truth [will be to] those who devise good.23 In all labor there is profit; But the talk of the lips [tends] only to poverty.24 The crown of the wise is their riches; [But] folly is the diadem of fools.25 A true witness delivers souls; But he who utters lies [causes] deceit.26 In the fear of Yahweh is strong confidence; And his sons will have a place of refuge.27 The fear of Yahweh is a fountain of life, That one may avoid the snares of death.28 In the multitude of people is the king's glory; But in the want of people is the destruction of the prince.29 He who is slow to anger is of great understanding; But he who is in a hurry of spirit exalts folly.30 A tranquil heart is the life of the flesh; But envy is the rottenness of the bones.31 He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker; But he who has mercy on the needy honors him.32 The wicked is thrust down in his evildoing; But the righteous has a refuge in his death.33 Wisdom rests in the heart of him who has understanding; But [that which is] in the inward part of fools is made known.34 Righteousness exalts a nation; But sin is a reproach to any people.35 The king's favor is toward a slave who deals wisely; But his wrath will be [against] him who causes shame.
