1 Seuraavassa luetellaan ne papit ja leeviläiset, jotka olivat tulleet pakkosiirtolaisuudesta Serubbabelin, Sealtielin pojan, ja Jesuan kanssa: Seraja, Jeremia, Esra,

2 Amarja, Malluk, Hattus,

3 Sekanja, Rehum, Meremot,

4 Iddo, Ginneton, Abia,

5 Mijamin, Maadja, Bilga,

6 Semaja, Jojarib, Jedaja,

7 Sallu, Amok, Hilkia ja Jedaja. Nämä olivat Jesuan aikana pappisveljiensä päämiehiä.

8 Leeviläisiä olivat: Jesua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Serebja, Juuda ja Mattanja, joka yhdessä veljiensä kanssa johti ylistyslaulua,

9 sekä Bakbukja ja Unni, joista kumpikin johti sukunsa miehistä koostuvaa kuoroa.

10 Jesualle syntyi Jojakim, Jojakimille Eljasib, Eljasibille Jojada,

11 Jojadalle Jonatan, Jonatanille Jaddua.

12 Jojakimin aikana olivat pappissukujen päämiehinä seuraavat papit: Meraja oli Serajan suvun päämies, Hananja Jeremian,

13 Mesullam Esran, Johanan Amarjan,

14 Jonatan Mallukin, Joosef Sebanjan,

15 Adna Harimin, Helkai Merajotin,

16 Sakarja Iddon, Mesullam Ginnetonin,

17 Sikri Abian, ... Minjaminin, Piltai Moadjan,

18 Sammua Bilgan, Jonatan Semajan,

19 Mattenai Jojaribin, Ussi Jedajan,

20 Kallai Sallun, Eber Amokin,

21 Hasabja Hilkian ja Netanel Jedajan suvun päämies.

22 Eljasibin, Jojadan, Johananin ja Jadduan aikana merkittiin pappien sukujen päämiehet aikakirjoihin Persian kuninkaan Dareioksen hallituskauteen asti.

23 Leeviläisten sukujen päämiehet on merkitty aikakirjoihin Johananin, Eljasibin pojan, aikaan asti.

24 Leeviläisten päämiehiä olivat Hasabja, Serebja, Jesua, Binnui ja Kadmiel. Kukin heistä johti sukunsa miehistä koostuvaa kuoroa; kuorot lauloivat kiitos- ja ylistyslauluja osastoittain järjestäytyneinä, niin kuin Jumalan mies Daavid oli määrännyt.

25 Mattanja, Bakbukja, Obadja, Mesullam, Talmon ja Akkub olivat portinvartijoita, joiden tehtävänä oli vartioida porttien varastohuoneita.

26 Nämä miehet olivat Jojakimin, Jesuan pojan, Josadakin pojanpojan, sekä käskynhaltija Nehemian ja pappi Esran, lainopettajan, aikalaisia.

27 Kun tuli aika vihkiä Jerusalemin muuri, haettiin leeviläiset kaikkialta maasta Jerusalemiin riemukkaan vihkiäisjuhlan viettoon, laulamaan kiitoslauluja ja soittamaan symbaaleja, harppuja ja lyyroja.

28 Laulajat tulivat koolle Jerusalemin ympäristöstä, Netofan maatiloilta,

29 Bet- Gilgalista ja Geban ja Asmavetin mailta; he olivat näet rakentaneet itselleen maataloja Jerusalemin ympäristöön.

30 Papit ja leeviläiset puhdistautuivat, ja sitten he puhdistivat kansan sekä portit ja muurin.

31 Sen jälkeen minä johdatin Juudan ruhtinaat ylös muurille ja järjestin kaksi suurta ylistyskuoroa. Toinen niistä vaelsi muuria pitkin oikealle kohti Lantaporttia.

32 Sen jäljessä kulkivat Hosaja ja toinen puoli Juudan ruhtinaista

33 sekä Asarja, Esra, Mesullam,

34 Juuda, Benjamin, Semaja ja Jeremia.

35 Sitten tulivat torvea soittavat papit, ensimmäisenä Sakarja, Jonatanin poika; hänen isoisänsä oli Semaja, tämän isä Mattanja, tämän Miika, tämän Sakkur, tämän Asaf.

38 Toinen kiitoslaulua laulava kuoro kulki vasemmalle, ja minä ja toinen puoli kansan johtomiehistä vaelsimme sen jäljessä muuria pitkin Uunitornin ohi Paksullemuurille

39 ja sieltä Efraiminportin, Vanhanportin, Kalaportin, Hananelintornin ja Sadantornin kautta Lammasportille. Vartioportin luona kulkue pysähtyi.

40 Sitten molemmat kuorot asettuivat Jumalan temppeliin, samoin minä ja puolet johtomiehistä

41 ja papit Eljakim, Maaseja, Minjamin, Miika, Eljoenai, Sakarja ja Hananja, joilla oli torvet,

42 sekä Maaseja, Semaja, Eleasar, Ussi, Johanan, Malkia, Elam ja Eser. Laulajat aloittivat Jisrahjan johdolla ylistyslaulun.

43 Tuona päivänä uhrattiin suuret teurasuhrit, ja kaikki riemuitsivat, sillä Jumala oli antanut heille suuren ilon. Myös naiset ja lapset olivat riemussa mukana, ja ilonpito kuului Jerusalemista kauas.

44 Samana päivänä asetettiin esimiehet valvomaan varastokammioita, joissa säilytettiin esikoisuhreja, kymmenyksiä ja muita antimia. Heidän tuli myös kerätä niihin kaupunkien peltojen sadosta osuudet, jotka lain mukaan kuuluivat papeille ja leeviläisille. Juudan kansa iloitsi siitä, että papit ja leeviläiset hoitivat taas tehtäviään

45 ja huolehtivat Jumalan palvelemisesta ja puhdistusmenoista. Samoin iloittiin siitä, että laulajat ja portinvartijat jälleen toimivat niin kuin Daavid ja hänen poikansa Salomo olivat määränneet.

46 Olihan jo muinoin, Daavidin ja Asafin aikana, ollut laulunjohtajia, kun laulettiin kiitosta ja ylistystä Jumalalle.

47 Serubbabelin ja Nehemian aikana koko Israel antoi laulajille ja portinvartijoille sen mitä nämä päivittäin tarvitsivat. Myös leeviläisille annettiin heille kuuluvat pyhät osuudet, ja leeviläiset vuorostaan antoivat pyhät osuudet Aaronin suvun papeille.

8 And the Levites: Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, Mattaniah, {who was} over the thanksgiving, he and his brethren;

9 and Bakbukiah and Unni, their brethren, were over against them as watches.

10 And Jeshua begot Joiakim, and Joiakim begot Eliashib, and Eliashib begot Joiada,

11 and Joiada begot Jonathan, and Jonathan begot Jaddua.

12 And in the days of Joiakim were priests, chief fathers: of Seraiah, Meraiah; of Jeremiah, Hananiah;

13 of Ezra, Meshullam; of Amariah, Jehohanan;

14 of Melicu, Jonathan; of Shebaniah, Joseph;

15 of Harim, Adna; of Meraioth, Helkai;

16 of Iddo, Zechariah; of Ginnethon, Meshullam;

17 of Abijah, Zichri; of Miniamin {and} Moadiah, Piltai;

18 of Bilgah, Shammua; of Shemaiah, Jehonathan;

19 and of Joiarib, Mattenai; of Jedaiah, Uzzi;

20 of Sallai, Kallai; of Amok, Eber;

21 of Hilkijah, Hashabiah; of Jedaiah, Nethaneel.

22 of the Levites, the chief fathers were recorded in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, and Johanan, and Jaddua, and the priests, until the reign of Darius the Persian.

23 The children of Levi, the chief fathers, were recorded in the book of the chronicles, even until the days of Johanan the son of Eliashib.

24 And the chief Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brethren over against them, to praise {and} to give thanks, according to the commandment of David the man of God, ward over against ward.

25 Mattaniah and Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, Akkub, were doorkeepers keeping the ward at the storehouses of the gates.

26 These were in the days of Joiakim the son of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor, and of Ezra the priest, the scribe.

27 And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to hold the dedication with gladness, both with thanksgivings, and with singing, {with} cymbals, lutes and harps.

28 And the children of the singers were assembled, both from the plain {of Jordan} round about Jerusalem, and from the villages of the Netophathites,

29 also from Beth-Gilgal, and out of the fields of Geba and Azmaveth; for the singers had built themselves hamlets round about Jerusalem.

30 And the priests and the Levites purified themselves; and they purified the people, and the gates and the wall.

31 And I brought up the princes of Judah upon the wall, and appointed two great choirs and processions, on the right hand upon the wall towards the dung-gate.

32 And after them went Hoshaiah, and half of the princes of Judah,

33 and Azariah, Ezra, and Meshullam,

34 Judah and Benjamin, and Shemaiah, and Jeremiah,

35 and {certain} of the priests' sons with trumpets: Zechariah the son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micaiah, the son of Zaccur, the son of Asaph;

36 and his brethren, Shemaiah, and Azareel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethaneel, and Judah, Hanani, with the musical instruments of David the man of God; and Ezra the scribe before them.

37 And at the fountain-gate, and over against them, they went up by the stairs of the city of David, at the ascent of the wall, above the house of David, even to the water-gate eastward.

38 And the second choir went in the opposite direction upon the wall, and I after them, and the half of the people, from beyond the tower of the furnaces even to the broad wall;

39 and from above the gate of Ephraim, and above the gate of the old {wall}, and above the fish-gate, and the tower of Hananeel, and the tower of Meah, even to the sheep-gate; and they stood still in the prison-gate.

40 And both choirs stood in the house of God, and I, and the half of the rulers with me;

41 and the priests, Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, Hananiah, with trumpets;

42 and Maaseiah, and Shemaiah, and Eleazar, and Uzzi, and Jehohanan, and Malchijah, and Elam, and Ezer. And the singers sang loud; and Jizrahiah was their overseer.

43 And that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy; and also the women and the children rejoiced. And the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

44 And at that time men were appointed over the chambers of the treasures for the heave-offerings, for the first-fruits, and for the tithes, to gather into them, out of the fields of the cities, the portions assigned by the law for the priests and the Levites; for Judah rejoiced over the priests, and over the Levites that waited.

45 And, with the singers and the doorkeepers, they kept the ward of their God, and the ward of the purification, according to the commandment of David {and} of Solomon his son.

46 For of old, in the days of David and Asaph, there were the chiefs of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgivings to God.

47 And all Israel, in the days of Zerubbabel and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the doorkeepers, every day what was needed, and they consecrated things for the Levites; and the Levites consecrated for the children of Aaron.
