1 Whence wars and whence fightings among you? are they not from hencedue to your pleasures which are taking the field in your members?2 Ye covetand have not, ye commit murder, and are jealousand cannot obtain,ye fight and war. Ye have notbecause ye do not really ask,3 Ye ask and receive not, because that, basely, ye ask, in order that, in your pleasures, ye may spend .4 Adulteresses! Know ye not that, the friendship of the world, is, enmity to God? Whosoever, therefore, is minded to be, a friend, of the world, an enemy of God, doth constitute himself.5 Or think ye that, in vain, the scripture speaketh? Is it, for envying, that the spirit which hath taken an abode within us doth crave?6 Howbeit he giveth, greater, favour. Wherefore it saithGod, against the haughty, arrayeth himself, Whereas, unto the lowly, he giveth favour.7 Range yourselves, therefore, under God, but withstand the adversary, and he will flee from you:8 Draw near unto God, and he will draw near unto you. Cleanse hands, sinners! Chasten hearts, double souls!9 Be miserable and lament and weep, let, your laughter, into lamentation, be turned, and, your joy, into dejection;10 Be made low in presence of the Lord, and he will lift you up.11 Be not speaking one against another, brethren! He that speaketh against a brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against law, and judgeth law; Now, if, upon law, thou art passing judgment, thou art not a doer of law, but a judge!12 One, is Lawgiver and JudgeHe who hath power to save and to destroy; but who art, thou, that judgest thy neighbour?13 Come now! ye that sayToday or To-morrow, we will journey unto this city here, and will spend there a year, and will trade and get gain,14 Men who are not versed in the morrowof what sort your life ; for ye are, a vapourfor a little, appearing, then, just disappearing!15 Instead of your sayingIf, the Lord, be pleased, we shall both, live and do this or that;16 Whereas, now, are ye boasting in your pretensions:All boasting like this, is, wicked,17 To him, therefore, who knoweth how to be doing, a right thing, and is not doing it, it is, sin, unto him.

1 Donde vêm as guerras e pelejas entre vós? Porventura, não vêm disto, a saber, dos vossos deleites, que nos vossos membros guerreiam? 2 Cobiçais e nada tendes; sois invejosos e cobiçosos e não podeis alcançar; combateis e guerreais e nada tendes, porque não pedis. 3 Pedis e não recebeis, porque pedis mal, para o gastardes em vossos deleites. 4 Adúlteros e adúlteras, não sabeis vós que a amizade do mundo é inimizade contra Deus? Portanto, qualquer que quiser ser amigo do mundo constitui-se inimigo de Deus. 5 Ou cuidais vós que em vão diz a Escritura: O Espírito que em nós habita tem ciúmes? 6 Antes, dá maior graça. Portanto, diz: Deus resiste aos soberbos, dá, porém, graça aos humildes. 7 Sujeitai-vos, pois, a Deus; resisti ao diabo, e ele fugirá de vós. 8 Chegai-vos a Deus, e ele se chegará a vós. Limpai as mãos, pecadores; e, vós de duplo ânimo, purificai o coração. 9 Senti as vossas misérias, e lamentai, e chorai; converta-se o vosso riso em pranto, e o vosso gozo, em tristeza. 10 Humilhai-vos perante o Senhor, e ele vos exaltará.

11 Irmãos, não faleis mal uns dos outros. Quem fala mal de um irmão e julga a seu irmão fala mal da lei e julga a lei; e, se tu julgas a lei, já não és observador da lei, mas juiz. 12 Há só um Legislador e um Juiz, que pode salvar e destruir. Tu, porém, quem és, que julgas a outrem?

13 Eia, agora, vós que dizeis: Hoje ou amanhã, iremos a tal cidade, e lá passaremos um ano, e contrataremos, e ganharemos. 14 Digo-vos que não sabeis o que acontecerá amanhã. Porque que é a vossa vida? É um vapor que aparece por um pouco e depois se desvanece. 15 Em lugar do que devíeis dizer: Se o Senhor quiser, e se vivermos, faremos isto ou aquilo. 16 Mas, agora, vos gloriais em vossas presunções; toda glória tal como esta é maligna. 17 Aquele, pois, que sabe fazer o bem e o não faz comete pecado.
