1 in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet,2 "Speak now to Zerub'babel the son of She-al'ti-el, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehoz'adak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say,3 `Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not in your sight as nothing?4 Yet now take courage, O Zerub'babel, says the LORD; take courage, O Joshua, son of Jehoz'adak, the high priest; take courage, all you people of the land, says the LORD; work, for I am with you, says the LORD of hosts,5 according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit abides among you; fear not.6 For thus says the LORD of hosts: Once again, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land;7 and I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with splendor, says the LORD of hosts.8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the LORD of hosts.9 The latter splendor of this house shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts; and in this place I will give prosperity, says the LORD of hosts.'"10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet,11 "Thus says the LORD of hosts: Ask the priests to decide this question,12 `If one carries holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and touches with his skirt bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any kind of food, does it become holy?'" The priests answered, "No."13 Then said Haggai, "If one who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of these, does it become unclean?" The priests answered, "It does become unclean."14 Then Haggai said, "So is it with this people, and with this nation before me, says the LORD; and so with every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.15 Pray now, consider what will come to pass from this day onward. Before a stone was placed upon a stone in the temple of the LORD,16 how did you fare? When one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten; when one came to the winevat to draw fifty measures, there were but twenty.17 I smote you and all the products of your toil with blight and mildew and hail; yet you did not return to me, says the LORD.18 Consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month. Since the day that the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid, consider:19 Is the seed yet in the barn? Do the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree still yield nothing? From this day on I will bless you."20 The word of the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month,21 "Speak to Zerub'babel, governor of Judah, saying, I am about to shake the heavens and the earth,22 and to overthrow the throne of kingdoms; I am about to destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations, and overthrow the chariots and their riders; and the horses and their riders shall go down, every one by the sword of his fellow.23 On that day, says the LORD of hosts, I will take you, O Zerub'babel my servant, the son of She-al'ti-el, says the LORD, and make you like a signet ring; for I have chosen you, says the LORD of hosts."

1 Neste segundo ano do reinado de Dario, rei da Pérsia, no dia vinte e um do sétimo mês, o Senhor falou de novo com o profeta Ageu. Deus mandou 2 que ele fosse falar com o governador de Judá, Zorobabel, filho de Salatiel, com o Grande Sacerdote Josué, filho de Jozadaque, e com todo o povo e lhes dissesse o seguinte:

3 — Deve haver alguém aqui que viu o Templo quando ele ainda era belo . Mas vejam como está agora! Não lhes parece que não vale nada mesmo? 4 No entanto tenham coragem! Coragem, Zorobabel! Coragem, Josué! Coragem, toda a gente deste país! Trabalhem todos, pois eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, estou com vocês. 5 Conforme a aliança que fiz com o meu povo quando o tirei do Egito, o meu Espírito sempre está com vocês. Portanto, não fiquem com medo.

6 — Pois é isto o que eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, digo: Daqui a pouco farei com que tremam o céu e a terra, o mar e a terra firme. 7 Vou fazer com que tremam todas as nações, e as suas riquezas serão trazidas para o meu Templo aqui em Jerusalém. E assim encherei o meu Templo de beleza. 8 Toda a prata e todo o ouro do mundo são meus. 9 Então o novo Templo será ainda mais belo do que o primeiro, e dali eu darei prosperidade e paz ao meu povo. Eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, falei.

10 Neste mesmo ano, no dia vinte e quatro do nono mês, o Senhor falou de novo com o profeta Ageu. 11 O Senhor Todo-Poderoso disse:

— Vá falar com os sacerdotes e peça a opinião deles a respeito da seguinte questão: 12 Suponham que alguém esteja levando na dobra da sua capa um pedaço da carne que foi oferecida em sacrifício a Deus. Então, se a capa tocar num pão, ou num cozido, ou em vinho, ou em azeite, ou em qualquer outra comida, isso quer dizer que estas coisas também ficarão puras?

Ageu fez a pergunta, e os sacerdotes disseram que não.

13 Aí Ageu perguntou aos sacerdotes:

— E, se alguém ficou impuro por ter tocado num defunto e depois tocar em qualquer uma daquelas comidas, isso quer dizer que elas também ficam impuras?

Os sacerdotes responderam:

— Sim! Elas ficam impuras.

14 Então Ageu disse:

— O Senhor diz que é exatamente isso o que acontece com esse povo. Para Deus, são impuros todo o povo deste país, tudo o que eles fazem e todos os sacrifícios que são oferecidos no altar.

15 O Senhor Deus diz:

— Pensem bem em tudo o que aconteceu desde aquele dia. Antes de vocês terem começado a construção do Templo, 16 o que é que acontecia? Se alguém ia até um depósito procurando duzentos quilos de trigo, encontrava só cem quilos; se fosse até o lugar onde se faz vinho querendo cem litros, encontrava somente quarenta. 17 Eu os castiguei com ventos muito quentes, com pragas nas plantas e com chuvas de pedra e assim destruí todas as suas plantações; mas mesmo assim vocês não voltaram para mim. 18 Hoje mesmo, no dia vinte e quatro do nono mês, vocês acabaram de construir o alicerce do Templo. E vejam bem o que vai acontecer daqui em diante. 19 Mesmo que agora não haja trigo nos depósitos, mesmo que as parreiras, as figueiras, as romãzeiras e as oliveiras não tenham produzido nada, de hoje em diante eu os abençoarei.

20 Naquele mesmo dia, o dia vinte e quatro do nono mês, o Senhor falou de novo com Ageu 21 e mandou que ele dissesse a Zorobabel, o governador de Judá, o seguinte:

— Eu vou fazer tremer o céu e a terra; 22 vou derrubar os tronos dos reis e acabar com o poder de todos eles. Vou destruir os carros de guerra e os que andam neles, e os cavalos também morrerão; os cavaleiros matarão uns aos outros. 23 E, quando aquele dia chegar, eu farei com que, em meu nome, você governe o meu povo, pois você, Zorobabel, filho de Salatiel, é o meu servo escolhido. Eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, falei.
