1 "Behold, I send my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.2 But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? "For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap;3 he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, till they present right offerings to the LORD.4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.5 "Then I will draw near to you for judgment; I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow and the orphan, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the LORD of hosts.6 "For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.7 From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. But you say, `How shall we return?'8 Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, `How are we robbing thee?' In your tithes and offerings.9 You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me; the whole nation of you.10 Bring the full tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house; and thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.11 I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil; and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the LORD of hosts.12 Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the LORD of hosts.13 "Your words have been stout against me, says the LORD. Yet you say, `How have we spoken against thee?'14 You have said, `It is vain to serve God. What is the good of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the LORD of hosts?15 Henceforth we deem the arrogant blessed; evildoers not only prosper but when they put God to the test they escape.'"16 Then those who feared the LORD spoke with one another; the LORD heeded and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the LORD and thought on his name.17 "They shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts, my special possession on the day when I act, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him.18 Then once more you shall distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.

1 O Senhor Todo-Poderoso diz:

— Eu enviarei o meu mensageiro para preparar o meu caminho. E o Senhor a quem vocês estão procurando vai chegar de repente ao seu Templo. E está chegando o mensageiro que vocês esperam, aquele que vai trazer a aliança que farei com vocês.

2 Mas quem poderá aguentar o dia em que ele vier? Quem ficará firme quando ele aparecer? Pois ele será como o fogo, para nos purificar; será como o sabão, para nos lavar. 3 Ele se sentará para purificar os sacerdotes, os descendentes de Levi, como quem purifica e refina a prata e o ouro no fogo. Assim eles poderão oferecer a Deus os sacrifícios que ele exige. 4 Então as ofertas trazidas pelo povo de Judá e pelos moradores de Jerusalém agradarão a Deus, como acontecia nos tempos passados.

5 O Senhor Todo-Poderoso diz ao seu povo:

— Eu virei julgá-los. E darei sem demora o meu testemunho contra todos os que não me respeitam, isto é, os feiticeiros, os adúlteros, os que juram falso, os que exploram os trabalhadores e os que negam os direitos das viúvas, dos órfãos e dos estrangeiros que vivem com vocês.

6 O Senhor diz:

— Eu sou o Senhor e não mudo. É por isso que vocês, os descendentes de Jacó, não foram destruídos. 7 Vocês são como os seus antepassados: abandonam as minhas leis e não as cumprem. Voltem para mim, e eu voltarei para vocês. Mas vocês perguntam: "Como é que vamos voltar?" 8 Eu pergunto: "Será que alguém pode roubar a Deus?" Mas vocês têm roubado e ainda me perguntam: "Como é que estamos te roubando?" Vocês me roubam nos dízimos e nas ofertas. 9 Todos vocês estão me roubando, e por isso eu amaldiçoo a nação toda. 10 Eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, ordeno que tragam todos os seus dízimos aos depósitos do Templo, para que haja bastante comida na minha casa. Ponham-me à prova e verão que eu abrirei as janelas do céu e farei cair sobre vocês as mais ricas bênçãos. 11 Não deixarei que os gafanhotos destruam as suas plantações, e as suas parreiras darão muitas uvas. 12 Todos os povos dirão que vocês são felizes, pois vocês vivem numa terra boa e rica. Eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, estou falando.

13 O Senhor diz:

— Vocês falaram mal de mim e ainda perguntam: "O que foi que falamos contra ti?" 14 Vocês dizem: "Não vale a pena servir a Deus. Não adianta nada a gente fazer o que o Senhor Todo-Poderoso manda ou vestir roupas de luto para mostrar a ele que estamos arrependidos. 15 É fácil notar que os orgulhosos são felizes, e a gente vê que tudo dá certo para os maus; quando põem o Senhor à prova, eles não são castigados."

16 Então os que temiam o Senhor falaram uns com os outros, e ele escutou com atenção o que estavam dizendo. E na presença dele foram escritos num livro os nomes dos que respeitavam a Deus e o adoravam. 17 O Senhor Todo-Poderoso diz:

— Eles serão o meu povo. Quando chegar o dia que estou preparando, eles serão o meu próprio povo. Eu terei compaixão deles como um pai tem compaixão do filho que lhe obedece. 18 E mais uma vez o meu povo verá a diferença entre o que acontece com as pessoas boas e com as más, entre os que me servem e os que não me obedecem.
