1 Und Joram, der Sohn Ahabs, ward König über Israel zu Samaria, im achtzehnten Jahre Josaphats, des Königs von Juda, und regierte zwölf Jahre lang.
2 Und er tat, was dem HERRN übel gefiel, doch nicht wie sein Vater und seine Mutter; denn er beseitigte die Säule Baals, welche sein Vater gemacht hatte.
3 Aber er hielt fest an den Sünden, zu denen Jerobeam, der Sohn Nebats, Israel verführt hatte, und ließ nicht davon.
4 Mesa aber, der König der Moabiter, hatte viel Vieh und zinsete dem König von Israel hunderttausend Lämmer und hunderttausend Widder samt der Wolle.
5 Als aber Ahab tot war, fiel der König der Moabiter von dem König von Israel ab.
6 Zu jener Zeit zog der König Joram von Samaria aus und musterte ganz Israel;
7 und er sandte zu Josaphat, dem König von Juda, und ließ ihm sagen: Der König der Moabiter ist von mir abgefallen! Willst du mit mir kommen, wider die Moabiter zu streiten? Er sprach: Ich will hinaufkommen! Ich bin wie du, mein Volk ist wie dein Volk, und meine Pferde wie deine Pferde!
8 Und er sprach: Auf welchem Wege wollen wir hinaufziehen? Er sprach: Auf dem Wege durch die Wüste Edom!
9 Da zogen aus der König von Israel, der König von Juda und der König von Edom. Als sie aber einen Weg von sieben Tagen zurückgelegt hatten, hatte das Heer und das Vieh, das ihnen folgte, kein Wasser mehr.
10 Da sprach der König von Israel: Wehe! der HERR hat diese drei Könige gerufen, um sie in die Hand der Moabiter zu geben!
11 Josaphat aber sprach: Ist kein Prophet des HERRN hier, daß wir durch ihn den HERRN um Rat fragen könnten? Da antwortete einer von den Knechten des Königs von Israel und sprach: Hier ist Elisa, der Sohn Saphats, der dem Elia Wasser auf die Hände goß!
12 Josaphat sprach: Das Wort des HERRN ist bei ihm! Also zogen der König von Israel und Josaphat und der König von Edom zu ihm hinab.
13 Elisa aber sprach zum König von Israel: Was habe ich mit dir zu schaffen? Gehe hin zu den Propheten deines Vaters und zu den Propheten deiner Mutter! Der König von Israel sprach zu ihm: Nein! Hat der HERR nicht diese drei Könige gerufen, um sie in die Hand der Moabiter zu geben?
14 Elisa sprach: So wahr der HERR der Heerscharen lebt, vor dessen Angesicht ich stehe, wenn ich nicht auf Josaphat, den König von Juda, Rücksicht nähme, ich wollte dich nicht ansehen noch beachten!
15 So bringt mir nun einen Saitenspieler! Und als der Saitenspieler die Saiten schlug, kam die Hand des HERRN über ihn.
16 Und er sprach: So spricht der HERR: Machet im Tale Grube an Grube!
17 Denn also spricht der HERR: Ihr werdet keinen Wind noch Regen sehen; dennoch soll dieses Tal voll Wasser werden, so daß ihr zu trinken habt,
18 auch euer kleines und großes Vieh. Und zwar ist das ein Geringes vor dem HERRN; er wird auch die Moabiter in eure Hand geben,
19 so daß ihr alle festen Städte und alle auserlesenen Städte schlagen werdet; und ihr werdet alle guten Bäume fällen und alle Wasserbrunnen verstopfen und alle guten Äcker mit Steinen verderben.
20 Am Morgen nun, zur Zeit des Speisopfers, siehe, da kam ein Gewässer den Weg von Edom her, und das Land wurde voll Wasser.
21 Als aber ganz Moab hörte, daß die Könige heraufzogen, wider sie zu streiten, wurden alle, die das Schwert umgürten konnten, aufgeboten; und sie besetzten die Grenze.
22 Und als sie sich am Morgen früh aufmachten und die Sonne über dem Wasser aufging, erschien den Moabitern das Wasser drüben rot wie Blut.
23 Und sie sprachen: Es ist Blut! Die Könige haben sich gewiß mit dem Schwerte bekämpft, und einer wird den andern erschlagen haben! Und nun, Moab, mache dich auf zur Plünderung!
24 Als sie aber zum Lager Israels kamen, machten sich die Israeliten auf und schlugen die Moabiter, daß sie vor ihnen flohen.
25 Jene aber drangen ins Land ein und schlugen Moab und rissen die Städte nieder und warfen ein jeder seinen Stein auf alle guten Äcker, bis sie voll waren, und verstopften alle Wasserbrunnen und fällten alle guten Bäume, bis in Kir-Hareset nur noch dessen Steinmauern übrigblieben. Und die Schleuderer umzingelten und beschossen es.
26 Als aber der König der Moabiter sah, daß ihm der Streit zu stark ward, nahm er siebenhundert Mann mit sich, die das Schwert zogen, um gegen den König von Edom durchzubrechen; aber sie konnten nicht.
27 Da nahm er seinen erstgeborenen Sohn, der an seiner Statt König werden sollte, und opferte ihn zum Brandopfer auf der Mauer. Und es entstand großer Unwille wider Israel, so daß sie von ihm abzogen und wieder in ihr Land zurückkehrten.
1 And Jehoram son of Ahab hath reigned over Israel, in Samaria, in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigneth twelve years,
2 and doth the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, only not like his father, and like his mother, and he turneth aside the standing-pillar of Baal that his father made;
3 only to the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat that he caused Israel to sin he hath cleaved, he hath not turned aside from it.
4 And Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master, and he rendered to the king of Israel a hundred thousand lambs, and a hundred thousand rams, [with] wool,
5 and it cometh to pass at the death of Ahab, that the king of Moab transgresseth against the king of Israel.
6 And king Jehoram goeth out in that day from Samaria, and inspecteth all Israel,
7 and goeth and sendeth unto Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, `The king of Moab hath transgressed against me; dost thou go with me unto Moab for battle?` and he saith, `I go up, as I, so thou; as my people, so thy people; as my horses, so thy horses.
8 And he saith, `Where [is] this -- the way we go up?` and he saith, `The way of the wilderness of Edom.`
9 And the king of Israel goeth, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom, and they turn round the way seven days, and there hath been no water for the camp, and for the cattle that [are] at their feet,
10 and the king of Israel saith, `Alas, for Jehovah hath called for these three kings, to give them into the hand of Moab.`
11 And Jehoshaphat saith, `Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah, and we seek Jehovah by him?` And one of the servants of the king of Israel answereth and saith, `Here [is] Elisha son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.`
12 And Jehoshaphat saith, `The word of Jehovah is with him;` and go down unto him do the king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom.
13 And Elisha saith unto the king of Israel, `What -- to me and to thee? go unto the prophets of thy father, and unto the prophets of thy mother;` and the king of Israel saith to him, `Nay, for Jehovah hath called for these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.`
14 And Elisha saith, `Jehovah of Hosts liveth, before whom I have stood; for unless the face of Jehoshaphat king of Judah I am lifting up, I do not look unto thee, nor see thee;
15 and now, bring to me a minstrel; and it hath been, at the playing of the minstrel, that the hand of Jehovah is on him,
16 and he saith, `Thus said Jehovah, Make this valley ditches -- ditches;
17 for thus said Jehovah, Ye do not see wind, nor do ye see rain, and that valley is full of water, and ye have drunk -- ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.
18 `And this hath been light in the eyes of Jehovah, and he hath given Moab into your hand,
19 and ye have smitten every fenced city, and every choice city, and every good tree ye cause to fall, and all fountains of waters ye stop, and every good portion ye mar with stones.`
20 And it cometh to pass in the morning, at the ascending of the [morning]-present, that lo, waters are coming in from the way of Edom, and the land is filled with the waters,
21 and all Moab have heard that the kings have come up to fight against them, and they are called together, from every one girding on a girdle and upward, and they stand by the border.
22 And they rise early in the morning, and the sun hath shone on the waters, and the Moabites see, from over-against, the waters red as blood,
23 and say, `Blood this [is]; the kings have been surely destroyed, and they smite each his neighbour; and now for spoil, Moab!`
24 And they come in unto the camp of Israel, and the Israelites rise, and smite the Moabites, and they flee from their face; and they enter into Moab, so as to smite Moab,
25 and the cities they break down, and [on] every good portion they cast each his stone, and have filled it, and every fountain of water they stop, and every good tree they cause to fall -- till one had left its stones in Kir-Haraseth, and the slingers go round and smite it.
26 And the king of Moab seeth that the battle has been too strong for him, and he taketh with him seven hundred men, drawing sword, to cleave through unto the king of Edom, and they have not been able,
27 and he taketh his son, the first-born who reigneth in his stead, and causeth him to ascend -- a burnt-offering on the wall, and there is great wrath against Israel, and they journey from off him, and turn back to the land.
