1 Er kam aber auch nach Derbe und nach Lystra. Und siehe, dort war ein Jünger namens Timotheus, der Sohn einer gläubigen jüdischen Frau, aber eines griechischen Vaters.
2 Der hatte ein gutes Zeugnis von den Brüdern in Lystra und Ikonium.
3 Diesen wollte Paulus mit sich ziehen lassen. Und er nahm ihn und ließ ihn beschneiden um der Juden willen, die an jenem Orte waren; denn sie wußten alle, daß sein Vater ein Grieche war.
4 Indem sie aber die Städte durchzogen, übergaben sie ihnen zur Befolgung die von den Aposteln und Ältesten in Jerusalem gefaßten Beschlüsse.
5 Da wurden die Gemeinden im Glauben gestärkt und nahmen an Zahl täglich zu.
6 Als sie aber Phrygien und die Landschaft Galatien durchzogen, wurde ihnen vom heiligen Geist gewehrt, das Wort in Asien zu verkünden.
7 Und sie kamen gen Mysien und versuchten nach Bithynien zu reisen; und der Geist Jesu ließ es ihnen nicht zu.
8 Da reisten sie an Mysien vorbei und kamen hinab nach Troas.
9 Und es erschien dem Paulus in der Nacht ein Gesicht: Ein mazedonischer Mann stand vor ihm, bat ihn und sprach: Komm herüber nach Mazedonien und hilf uns!
10 Als er aber dieses Gesicht gesehen hatte, trachteten wir alsbald nach Mazedonien zu ziehen, indem wir daraus schlossen, daß uns der Herr berufen habe, ihnen das Evangelium zu predigen.
11 So fuhren wir denn von Troas ab und kamen in gerader Fahrt nach Samothrace und am folgenden Tage nach Neapolis;
12 und von da nach Philippi, welches die erste Stadt jenes Teils von Mazedonien ist, eine Kolonie. Wir hielten uns aber in dieser Stadt etliche Tage auf.
13 Und am Sabbattage gingen wir zum Tor hinaus an den Fluß, wo wir eine Gebetsstätte vermuteten; und wir setzten uns und redeten zu den Frauen, die da zusammengekommen waren.
14 Und eine gottesfürchtige Frau namens Lydia, eine Purpurhändlerin aus der Stadt Thyatira, hörte zu; und der Herr tat ihr das Herz auf, daß sie achthatte auf das, was von Paulus geredet wurde.
15 Als sie aber samt ihrem Hause getauft worden war, bat sie und sprach: Wenn ihr davon überzeugt seid, daß ich an den Herrn gläubig bin, so kommet in mein Haus und bleibet daselbst! Und sie nötigte uns.
16 Es begab sich aber, als wir zur Gebetsstätte gingen, daß uns eine Magd begegnete, die einen Wahrsagergeist hatte und ihren Herren durch ihr Wahrsagen großen Gewinn verschaffte.
17 Diese folgte Paulus und uns nach, schrie und sprach: Diese Männer sind Diener des höchsten Gottes, die euch den Weg des Heils verkündigen!
18 Und solches tat sie viele Tage. Paulus aber, den das bemühte, wandte sich um und sprach zu dem Geist: Ich gebiete dir im Namen Jesu Christi, von ihr auszufahren! Und er fuhr aus zur selben Stunde.
19 Als aber ihre Herren sahen, daß die Hoffnung auf ihren Gewinn entschwunden war, ergriffen sie Paulus und Silas und schleppten sie auf den Markt vor die Obersten,
20 führten sie den Hauptleuten zu und sprachen: Diese Männer, die Juden sind, verwirren unsere Stadt
21 und verkündigen Gebräuche, welche anzunehmen oder auszuüben uns nicht erlaubt ist, da wir Römer sind!
22 Und das Volk stand ebenfalls wider sie auf; und die Hauptleute rissen ihnen die Kleider ab und befahlen, sie mit Ruten zu schlagen.
23 Und nachdem sie ihnen viele Streiche gegeben, warfen sie sie ins Gefängnis und befahlen dem Kerkermeister, sie sicher zu verwahren.
24 Dieser warf sie auf solchen Befehl hin ins innere Gefängnis und schloß ihre Füße in den Block.
25 Um Mitternacht aber beteten Paulus und Silas und lobten Gott mit Gesang, und die Gefangenen hörten sie.
26 Plötzlich aber entstand ein großes Erdbeben, so daß die Grundfesten des Gefängnisses erschüttert wurden, und alsbald öffneten sich alle Türen, und die Bande aller wurden los.
27 Da erwachte der Kerkermeister aus dem Schlaf, und als er die Türen des Gefängnisses geöffnet sah, zog er das Schwert und wollte sich töten, weil er meinte, die Gefangenen seien entflohen.
28 Aber Paulus rief mit lauter Stimme und sprach: Tue dir kein Leid an; denn wir sind alle hier!
29 Da forderte er ein Licht, sprang hinein und fiel zitternd vor Paulus und Silas nieder.
30 Und er führte sie heraus und sprach: Ihr Herren, was muß ich tun, um gerettet zu werden?
31 Sie aber sprachen: Glaube an den Herrn Jesus, so wirst du gerettet werden, du und dein Haus!
32 Und sie sagten ihm und allen, die in seinem Hause waren, das Wort des Herrn.
33 Und er nahm sie in jener Stunde der Nacht zu sich und wusch ihnen die Striemen ab und ließ sich auf der Stelle taufen, er samt den Seinigen.
34 Und er führte sie in sein Haus, deckte den Tisch und frohlockte, daß er mit seinem ganzen Hause an Gott gläubig geworden war.
35 Als es aber Tag geworden war, sandten die Hauptleute die Gerichtsdiener mit dem Befehl: Laß jene Leute frei!
36 Da verkündigte der Kerkermeister dem Paulus diese Worte: Die Hauptleute haben hergesandt, daß man euch freilasse. So geht nun hinaus und ziehet hin in Frieden!
37 Paulus aber sprach zu ihnen: Sie haben uns, die wir Römer sind, öffentlich ohne Urteil geschlagen und ins Gefängnis geworfen; und jetzt schicken sie uns heimlich fort? Nicht also; sondern sie mögen selbst kommen und uns hinausführen!
38 Da verkündigten die Gerichtsdiener diese Worte den Hauptleuten; und diese fürchteten sich, als sie hörten, daß sie Römer seien;
39 und sie kamen und redeten ihnen zu und führten sie hinaus und baten sie, die Stadt zu verlassen.
40 Da verliessen sie das Gefängnis und begaben sich zu Lydia; und als sie die Brüder sahen, ermahnten sie sie und zogen fort.
1 And he came to Derbe and Lystra, and lo, a certain disciple was there, by name Timotheus son of a certain woman, a believing Jewess, but of a father, a Greek,
2 who was well testified to by the brethren in Lystra and Iconium;
3 this one did Paul wish to go forth with him, and having taken [him], he circumcised him, because of the Jews who are in those places, for they all knew his father -- that he was a Greek.
4 And as they were going on through the cities, they were delivering to them the decrees to keep, that have been judged by the apostles and the elders who [are] in Jerusalem,
5 then, indeed, were the assemblies established in the faith, and were abounding in number every day;
6 and having gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia,
7 having gone toward Mysia, they were trying to go on toward Bithynia, and the Spirit did not suffer them,
8 and having passed by Mysia, they came down to Troas.
9 And a vision through the night appeared to Paul -- a certain man of Macedonia was standing, calling upon him, and saying, `Having passed through to Macedonia, help us;` --
10 and when he saw the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go forth to Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord hath called us to preach good news to them,
11 having set sail, therefore, from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, on the morrow also to Neapolis,
12 thence also to Philippi, which is a principal city of the part of Macedonia -- a colony. And we were in this city abiding certain days,
13 on the sabbath-day also we went forth outside of the city, by a river, where there used to be prayer, and having sat down, we were speaking to the women who came together,
14 and a certain woman, by name Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, worshipping God, was hearing, whose heart the Lord did open to attend to the things spoken by Paul;
15 and when she was baptized, and her household, she did call upon us, saying, `If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, having entered into my house, remain;` and she constrained us.
16 And it came to pass in our going on to prayer, a certain maid, having a spirit of Python, did meet us, who brought much employment to her masters by soothsaying,
17 she having followed Paul and us, was crying, saying, `These men are servants of the Most High God, who declare to us a way of salvation;`
18 and this she was doing for many days, but Paul having been grieved, and having turned, said to the spirit, `I command thee, in the name of Jesus Christ, to come forth from her;` and it came forth the same hour.
19 And her masters having seen that the hope of their employment was gone, having caught Paul and Silas, drew [them] to the market-place, unto the rulers,
20 and having brought them to the magistrates, they said, `These men do exceedingly trouble our city, being Jews;
21 and they proclaim customs that are not lawful for us to receive nor to do, being Romans.`
22 And the multitude rose up together against them, and the magistrates having torn their garments from them, were commanding to beat [them] with rods,
23 many blows also having laid upon them, they cast them to prison, having given charge to the jailor to keep them safely,
24 who such a charge having received, did put them to the inner prison, and their feet made fast in the stocks.
25 And at midnight Paul and Silas praying, were singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were hearing them,
26 and suddenly a great earthquake came, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken, opened also presently were all the doors, and of all -- the bands were loosed;
27 and the jailor having come out of sleep, and having seen the doors of the prison open, having drawn a sword, was about to kill himself, supposing the prisoners to be fled,
28 and Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, `Thou mayest not do thyself any harm, for we are all here.`
29 And, having asked for a light, he sprang in, and trembling he fell down before Paul and Silas,
30 and having brought them forth, said, `Sirs, what must I do -- that I may be saved?`
31 and they said, `Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved -- thou and thy house;`
32 and they spake to him the word of the Lord, and to all those in his household;
33 and having taken them, in that hour of the night, he did bathe [them] from the blows, and was baptized, himself and all his presently,
34 having brought them also into his house, he set food before [them], and was glad with all the household, he having believed in God.
35 And day having come, the magistrates sent the rod-bearers, saying, `Let those men go;`
36 and the jailor told these words unto Paul -- `The magistrates have sent, that ye may be let go; now, therefore, having gone forth go on in peace;`
37 and Paul said to them, `Having beaten us publicly uncondemned -- men, Romans being -- they did cast [us] to prison, and now privately do they cast us forth! why no! but having come themselves, let them bring us forth.`
38 And the rod-bearers told to the magistrates these sayings, and they were afraid, having heard that they are Romans,
39 and having come, they besought them, and having brought [them] forth, they were asking [them] to go forth from the city;
40 and they, having gone forth out of the prison, entered into [the house of] Lydia, and having seen the brethren, they comforted them, and went forth.
