1 Habet acht, daß ihr eure Gerechtigkeit nicht vor den Leuten übet, um von ihnen gesehen zu werden; sonst habt ihr keinen Lohn bei eurem Vater im Himmel.
2 Wenn du nun Almosen gibst, sollst du nicht vor dir her posaunen lassen, wie die Heuchler in den Synagogen und auf den Gassen tun, um von den Leuten gepriesen zu werden. Wahrlich, ich sage euch, sie haben ihren Lohn dahin.
3 Wenn du aber Almosen gibst, so soll deine linke Hand nicht wissen, was deine rechte tut,
4 damit dein Almosen im Verborgenen sei. Und dein Vater, der ins Verborgene sieht, wird es dir vergelten öffentlich.
5 Und wenn ihr betet, sollt ihr nicht sein wie die Heuchler; denn sie beten gern in den Synagogen und an den Straßenecken, um von den Leuten bemerkt zu werden. Wahrlich, ich sage euch, sie haben ihren Lohn dahin.
6 Du aber, wenn du betest, geh in dein Kämmerlein und schließ deine Türe zu und bete zu deinem Vater im Verborgenen; und dein Vater, der ins Verborgene sieht, wird es dir vergelten öffentlich.
7 Und wenn ihr betet, sollt ihr nicht plappern wie die Heiden; denn sie meinen, sie werden erhört um ihrer vielen Worte willen.
8 Darum sollt ihr ihnen nicht gleichen! Denn euer Vater weiß, was ihr bedürft, ehe ihr ihn bittet.
9 So sollt ihr nun also beten: Unser Vater, der du bist in dem Himmel! Geheiligt werde dein Name.
10 Es komme dein Reich. Dein Wille geschehe wie im Himmel, also auch auf Erden.
11 Gib uns heute unser tägliches Brot.
12 Und vergib uns unsere Schulden, wie auch wir vergeben unsern Schuldnern.
13 Und führe uns nicht in Versuchung, sondern erlöse uns von dem Bösen. Denn dein ist das Reich und die Kraft und die Herrlichkeit in Ewigkeit! Amen.
14 Denn wenn ihr den Menschen ihre Fehler vergebet, so wird euer himmlischer Vater euch auch vergeben.
15 Wenn ihr aber den Menschen ihre Fehler nicht vergebet, so wird euch euer Vater eure Fehler auch nicht vergeben.
16 Wenn ihr aber fastet, sollt ihr nicht finster dreinsehen wie die Heuchler; denn sie verstellen ihr Angesicht, damit es von den Leuten bemerkt werde, daß sie fasten. Wahrlich, ich sage euch, sie haben ihren Lohn dahin.
17 Du aber, wenn du fastest, so salbe dein Haupt und wasche dein Angesicht,
18 damit es nicht von den Leuten bemerkt werde, daß du fastest, sondern von deinem Vater, der im Verborgenen ist; und dein Vater, der ins Verborgene sieht, wird es dir vergelten öffentlich.
19 Ihr sollt euch nicht Schätze sammeln auf Erden, wo die Motten und der Rost sie fressen, und wo die Diebe nachgraben und stehlen.
20 Sammelt euch aber Schätze im Himmel, wo weder die Motten noch der Rost sie fressen, und wo die Diebe nicht nachgraben und stehlen.
21 Denn wo dein Schatz ist, da wird auch dein Herz sein.
22 Das Auge ist des Leibes Leuchte. Wenn nun dein Auge lauter ist, so wird dein ganzer Leib licht sein.
23 Wenn aber dein Auge verdorben ist, so wird dein ganzer Leib finster sein. Wenn nun das Licht in dir Finsternis ist, wie groß wird dann die Finsternis sein!
24 Niemand kann zwei Herren dienen; denn entweder wird er den einen hassen und den andern lieben, oder er wird dem einen anhangen und den andern verachten. Ihr könnt nicht Gott dienen und dem Mammon.
25 Darum sage ich euch: Sorget euch nicht um euer Leben, was ihr essen und was ihr trinken sollt, noch um euren Leib, was ihr anziehen sollt. Ist nicht das Leben mehr als die Speise und der Leib mehr als die Kleidung?
26 Sehet die Vögel des Himmels an! Sie säen nicht und ernten nicht, sie sammeln auch nicht in die Scheunen; und euer himmlischer Vater nährt sie doch. Seid ihr nicht viel mehr wert als sie?
27 Wer aber von euch kann durch sein Sorgen zu seiner Länge eine einzige Elle hinzusetzen?
28 Und warum sorgt ihr euch um die Kleidung? Betrachtet die Lilien des Feldes, wie sie wachsen. Sie arbeiten nicht und spinnen nicht;
29 ich sage euch aber, daß auch Salomo in aller seiner Herrlichkeit nicht gekleidet gewesen ist wie deren eine.
30 Wenn nun Gott das Gras des Feldes, das heute steht und morgen in den Ofen geworfen wird, also kleidet, wird er das nicht viel mehr euch tun, ihr Kleingläubigen?
31 Darum sollt ihr nicht sorgen und sagen: Was werden wir essen, oder was werden wir trinken, oder womit werden wir uns kleiden?
32 Denn nach allen diesen Dingen trachten die Heiden; aber euer himmlischer Vater weiß, daß ihr das alles bedürft.
33 Trachtet aber zuerst nach dem Reiche Gottes und nach seiner Gerechtigkeit, so wird euch solches alles hinzugelegt werden.
34 Darum sollt ihr euch nicht sorgen um den andern Morgen; denn der morgende Tag wird für das Seine sorgen. Jedem Tage genügt seine eigene Plage!
1 `Take heed your kindness not to do before men, to be seen by them, and if not -- reward ye have not from your Father who [is] in the heavens;
2 whenever, therefore, thou mayest do kindness, thou mayest not sound a trumpet before thee as the hypocrites do, in the synagogues, and in the streets, that they may have glory from men; verily I say to you -- they have their reward!
3 `But thou, doing kindness, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doth,
4 that thy kindness may be in secret, and thy Father who is seeing in secret Himself shall reward thee manifestly.
5 `And when thou mayest pray, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites, because they love in the synagogues, and in the corners of the broad places -- standing -- to pray, that they may be seen of men; verily I say to you, that they have their reward.
6 `But thou, when thou mayest pray, go into thy chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who [is] in secret, and thy Father who is seeing in secret, shall reward thee manifestly.
7 `And -- praying -- ye may not use vain repetitions like the nations, for they think that in their much speaking they shall be heard,
8 be ye not therefore like to them, for your Father doth know those things that ye have need of before your asking him;
9 thus therefore pray ye: `Our Father who [art] in the heavens! hallowed be Thy name.
10 `Thy reign come: Thy will come to pass, as in heaven also on the earth.
11 `Our appointed bread give us to-day.
12 `And forgive us our debts, as also we forgive our debtors.
13 `And mayest Thou not lead us to temptation, but deliver us from the evil, because Thine is the reign, and the power, and the glory -- to the ages. Amen.
14 `For, if ye may forgive men their trespasses He also will forgive you -- your Father who [is] in the heavens;
15 but if ye may not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
16 `And when ye may fast, be ye not as the hypocrites, of sour countenances, for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men fasting; verily I say to you, that they have their reward.
17 `But thou, fasting, anoint thy head, and wash thy face,
18 that thou mayest not appear to men fasting, but to thy Father who [is] in secret, and thy Father, who is seeing in secret, shall reward thee manifestly.
19 `Treasure not up to yourselves treasures on the earth, where moth and rust disfigure, and where thieves break through and steal,
20 but treasure up to yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth disfigure, and where thieves do not break through nor steal,
21 for where your treasure is, there will be also your heart.
22 `The lamp of the body is the eye, if, therefore, thine eye may be perfect, all thy body shall be enlightened,
23 but if thine eye may be evil, all thy body shall be dark; if, therefore, the light that [is] in thee is darkness -- the darkness, how great!
24 `None is able to serve two lords, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to the one, and despise the other; ye are not able to serve God and Mammon.
25 `Because of this I say to you, be not anxious for your life, what ye may eat, and what ye may drink, nor for your body, what ye may put on. Is not the life more than the nourishment, and the body than the clothing?
26 look to the fowls of the heaven, for they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather into storehouses, and your heavenly Father doth nourish them; are not ye much better than they?
27 `And who of you, being anxious, is able to add to his age one cubit?
28 and about clothing why are ye anxious? consider well the lilies of the field; how do they grow? they do not labour, nor do they spin;
29 and I say to you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one of these.
30 `And if the herb of the field, that to-day is, and to-morrow is cast to the furnace, God doth so clothe -- not much more you, O ye of little faith?
31 therefore ye may not be anxious, saying, What may we eat? or, What may we drink? or, What may we put round?
32 for all these do the nations seek for, for your heavenly Father doth know that ye have need of all these;
33 but seek ye first the reign of God and His righteousness, and all these shall be added to you.
34 Be not therefore anxious for the morrow, for the morrow shall be anxious for its own things; sufficient for the day [is] the evil of it.
