1 Werdet nicht in großer Zahl Lehrer, meine Brüder, da ihr wisset, daß wir ein strengeres Urteil empfangen!

2 Denn wir fehlen alle viel; wenn jemand in der Rede nicht fehlt, so ist er ein vollkommener Mann, fähig, auch den ganzen Leib im Zaum zu halten.

3 Siehe, den Pferden legen wir die Zäume ins Maul, damit sie uns gehorchen, und so lenken wir ihren ganzen Leib.

4 Siehe, auch die Schiffe, so groß sie sind und so rauhe Winde sie auch treiben mögen, werden von einem ganz kleinen Steuerruder gelenkt, wohin die feste Hand des Steuermannes es haben will.

5 So ist auch die Zunge ein kleines Glied und rühmt sich doch großer Dinge. Siehe, ein kleines Feuer, welch großen Wald zündet es an!

6 Auch die Zunge ist ein Feuer. Als die Welt der Ungerechtigkeit nimmt die Zunge ihren Platz ein unter unsren Gliedern; sie befleckt den ganzen Leib und steckt den Familienkreis in Brand und wird selbst von der Hölle in Brand gesteckt.

7 Denn jede Natur (der wilden Tiere und Vögel, der Reptilien und Meertiere) wird gezähmt und ist gezähmt worden von der menschlichen Natur;

8 die Zunge aber kann kein Mensch zähmen, das unruhige Übel voll tödlichen Giftes!

9 Mit ihr loben wir den Herrn und Vater, und mit ihr verfluchen wir die Menschen, die nach dem Bilde Gottes gemacht sind;

10 aus ein und demselben Munde geht Loben und Fluchen hervor. Es soll, meine Brüder, nicht also sein!

11 Sprudelt auch eine Quelle aus demselben Loch zugleich Süßes und Bitteres hervor?

12 Kann auch, meine Brüder, ein Feigenbaum Oliven tragen, oder der Weinstock Feigen? So kann auch eine salzige Quelle kein süßes Wasser geben.

13 Wer ist weise und verständig unter euch? Der zeige durch einen guten Wandel seine Werke in Sanftmut der Weisheit!

14 Habt ihr aber bitteren Neid und Streitsucht in eurem Herzen, so rühmet euch nicht und lüget nicht wider die Wahrheit!

15 Das ist nicht die Weisheit, die von oben stammt, sondern eine irdische, seelische, dämonische.

16 Denn wo Neid und Streitsucht regieren, da ist Unordnung und jedes böse Ding.

17 Die Weisheit von oben aber ist erstens rein, sodann friedsam, gelinde, folgsam, voll Barmherzigkeit und guter Früchte, nicht schwankend, ungeheuchelt.

18 Die Frucht der Gerechtigkeit aber wird in Frieden gesät denen, die Frieden machen.

1 Many teachers become not, my brethren, having known that greater judgment we shall receive,

2 for we all make many stumbles; if any one in word doth not stumble, this one [is] a perfect man, able to bridle also the whole body;

3 lo, the bits we put into the mouths of the horses for their obeying us, and their whole body we turn about;

4 lo, also the ships, being so great, and by fierce winds being driven, are led about by a very small helm, whithersoever the impulse of the helmsman doth counsel,

5 so also the tongue is a little member, and doth boast greatly; lo, a little fire how much wood it doth kindle!

6 and the tongue [is] a fire, the world of the unrighteousness, so the tongue is set in our members, which is spotting our whole body, and is setting on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by the gehenna.

7 For every nature, both of beasts and of fowls, both of creeping things and things of the sea, is subdued, and hath been subdued, by the human nature,

8 and the tongue no one of men is able to subdue, [it is] an unruly evil, full of deadly poison,

9 with it we do bless the God and Father, and with it we do curse the men made according to the similitude of God;

10 out of the same mouth doth come forth blessing and cursing; it doth not need, my brethren, these things so to happen;

11 doth the fountain out of the same opening pour forth the sweet and the bitter?

12 is a fig-tree able, my brethren, olives to make? or a vine figs? so no fountain salt and sweet water [is able] to make.

13 Who [is] wise and intelligent among you? let him shew out of the good behaviour his works in meekness of wisdom,

14 and if bitter zeal ye have, and rivalry in your heart, glory not, nor lie against the truth;

15 this wisdom is not descending from above, but earthly, physical, demon-like,

16 for where zeal and rivalry [are], there is insurrection and every evil matter;

17 and the wisdom from above, first, indeed, is pure, then peaceable, gentle, easily entreated, full of kindness and good fruits, uncontentious, and unhypocritical: --

18 and the fruit of the righteousness in peace is sown to those making peace.
