1 Enquanto Esdras orava, e fazia confissão, chorando e prostrando-se diante da casa de Deus, ajuntou-se a ele de Israel uma grandíssima congregação de homens, de mulheres e de crianças. Pois o povo chorou com grande choro.2 Secanias, filho de Jeiel, um dos filhos de Elão, disse a Esdras: Nós temos transgredido contra o nosso Deus, e temos casado com mulheres estrangeiras dos povos da terra; contudo no tocante a isso ainda há esperança para Israel.3 Por isso façamos aliança com nosso Deus, de que despediremos todas as mulheres e os que delas são nascidos, segundo o conselho do meu Senhor, e o dos qe tremem ao mandamento do nosso Deus; e faça-se segundo a lei.4 Levanta-te, pois a ti te pertence o negócio, e nós somos contigo. Tem bom ânimo, e faze-o,5 Levantou-se Esdras, e obrigou os principais dos sacerdotes, os levitas e todo o Israel a jurar que fariam conforme esta palavra.6 Então se levantou Esdras de diante da casa de Deus, e entrou na câmara de Joanã, filho de Eliasibe; e tendo entrado ali, não comeu pão nem bebeu água, porque pranteava por causa da transgressão dos do cativeiro.7 Deitou-se pregão em Judá e em Jerusalém a todos os filhos do cativeiro, para que se ajuntassem em Jerusalém;8 e para que todo aquele que não se apresentasse dentro de três dias, segundo o conselho dos príncipes e dos anciãos, fosse anátema a sua fazenda, e fosse ele mesmo excluído da congregação do cativeiro.9 Concorreram todos os homens de Judá e de Benjamim a Jerusalém dentro de três dias. Era o nono mês aos vinte dias do mês; e todo o povo se assentou na praça diante da casa de Deus, tremendo por causa deste negócio e por causa das grandes chuvas.10 O sacerdote Esdras pôs-se em pé e disse-lhes: Vós transgredistes em vos casardes com mulheres estrangeiras, aumentando a culpa de Israel.11 Agora fazei confissão a Jeová, Deus de vossos pais, e fazei o que é do seu agrado. Separai-vos do povo da terra, e das mulheres estrangeiras.12 Respondeu toda a congregação e disse em alta voz: Como tu disseste a respeito de nós, assim havemos de fazer.13 O povo, porém, é muito; é tempo de grandes chuvas, e não podemos estar de fora. Isso não é obra de um dia nem de dois: pois temos grandemente transgredido neste negócio.14 Estabeleçam-se os nossos príncipes para toda a congregação, e todos os que estão em nossas cidades, os quais casaram com mulheres estrangeiras, venham em tempos determinados, e com eles os anciãos de cada cidade e os seus juízes, até que se desvie de nós o furor da ira do nosso Deus, no tocante a este negócio.15 (Todavia Jônatas, filho de Asael, e Jaseías, filho de Ticva, apoiados por Mesulão e Sabetai, levita, se opuseram a isso).16 Assim o fizeram os filhos do cativeiro. O sacerdote Esdras, juntamente com certos cabeças das famílias, segundo as suas famílias, e todos eles pelos seus nomes, foram apontados; e sentaram-se no primeiro dia do décimo mês para averiguar este negócio.17 Eles o concluíram no tocante a todos os que tinham casado com mulheres estrangeiras, ao primeiro dia do primeiro mês.18 Entre os filhos dos sacerdotes foram achados estes que tinham casado com mulheres estrangeiras: dos filhos de Jesua, o filho de Jozadaque, e seus irmãos, Maaséias, Eliezer, Jaribe e Gedalias.19 Prometeram despedir suas mulheres; e sendo culpados, ofereceram um carneiro do rebanho pela sua culpa.20 Dos filhos de Imer: Hanani e Zebadias.21 Dos filhos de Harim: Maaséias, Elias, Semaías, Jeiel e Uzias.22 Dos filhos de Pasur: Elioenai, Maaséias, Ismael, Netanel, Jozabade e Elasa.23 Dos levitas: Jozabade, Simei, Quelaías (este é Quelita), Petaías, Judá e Eliezer.24 Dos cantores: Eliasibe; e dos porteiros: Salum, Telém e Uri.25 De Israel: dos filhos de Parós, Ramias, Izias, Malquias, Miamim, Eleazar, Malquias e Benaías.26 Dos filhos de Elão: Matanias, Zacarias, Jeiel, Abdi, Jeremote e Elias.27 Dos filhos de Zatu: Elioenai, Eliasibe, Matanias, Jeremote, Zabade e Aziza.28 Dos filhos de Bebai: Joanã, Ananias, Zabai e Atlai.29 Dos filhos de Bani: Mesulão, Maluque, Adaías, Jasube, Seal e Jeremote.30 Dos filhos de Paate-Moabe; Adna, Quelal, Benaías, Maaséias, Matanias, Bezalel, Binui e Manassés.31 Dos filhos de Harim: Eliezer, Josias, Malquias, Semaías, Simeão,32 Benjamim, Maluque e Semarias.33 Dos filhos de Hasum: Matanai, Matatá, Zabade, Elifelete, Jeremai, Manassés e Simei.34 Dos filhos de Bani: Maadai, Anrão e Uel;35 Benaías, Bedias e Queluí;36 Vanias, Meremote e Eliasibe;37 Matanias, Matenai e Jaasai;38 Bani, Binui e Simei;39 Selemias, Natã e Adaías;40 Macnadbai, Sasai e Sarai;41 Azarel, Selemias e Semarias;42 Salum, Amarias e José.43 E dos filhos de Nebo: Jeiel, Matitias, Zabade, Zebina, Ido, Joel e Benaias.44 Todos estes tinham tomado mulheres estrangeiras; e alguns deles tinham mulheres de quem tiveram filhos.

1 Now when Esdras was thus praying, and beseeching, and weeping, and lying before the temple of God, there was gathered to him of Israel an exceeding great assembly of men and women and children, and the people wept with much lamentation.2 And Sechenias the son of Jehiel of the sons of Elam answered, and said to Esdras: We have sinned against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: and now if there be repentance in Israel concerning this,3 Let us make a covenant with the Lord our God, to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the will of the Lord, and of them that fear the commandment of the Lord our God: let it be done according to the law.4 Arise, it is thy part to give orders, and we will be with thee: take courage, and do it.5 So Esdras arose, and made the chiefs of the priests and of the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word, and they swore.6 And Esdras rose up from before the house of God, and went to the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliasib, and entered in thither: he ate no bread, and drank no water: for he mourned for the transgression of them that were come out of the captivity.7 And proclamation was made in Juda and Jerusalem to all the children of the captivity, that they should assemble together into Jerusalem.8 And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the ancients, all his substance should be taken away, and he should be cast out of the company of them that were returned from captivity.9 Then all the men of Juda, and Benjamin gathered themselves together to Jerusalem within three days, in the ninth month, the twentieth day of the month: and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of the sin, and the rain.10 And Esdras the priest stood up, and said to them: You have transgressed, and taken strange wives, to add to the sine of Israel.11 And now make confession to the Lord the God of your fathers, and do his pleasure, and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from your strange wives.12 And all the multitude answered and said with a loud voice: According to thy word unto us, so be it done.13 But as the people are many, and it is time of rain, and me are not able to stand without, and it is not a work of one day or two, (for we have exceedingly sinned in this matter,)14 Let rulers be appointed in all the multitude: and in all our cities, let them that have taken strange wives come at the times appointed, and with them the ancients and the judges of every city, until the wrath of our God be turned away from us for this sin.15 Then Jonathan the son of Azahel, and Jaasia the son of Thecua were appointed over this, and Mesollam and Sebethai, Levites, helped them:16 And the children of the captivity did so. And Esdras the priest, and the men heads of the families in the houses of their fathers, and all by their names, went and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.17 And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.18 And there were found among the sons of the priests that had taken strange wives: Of the sons of Josue the son of Josedec, and his brethren, Maasia, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Godolia.19 And they gave their hands to put away their wives, and to offer for their offence a ram of the flock.20 And of the sons of Emmer, Hanani, and Zebedia.21 And of the sons of Harim, Maasia, and Elia, and Semeia, and Jehiel, and Ozias.22 And of the sons of Pheshur, Elioenai, Maasia, Ismael, Nathanael, Jozabed, and Elasa.23 And of the sons of the Levites, Jozabed, and Semei, and Celaia, the same is Calita, Phataia, Juda, and Eliezer.24 And of the singing men, Elisiab: and of the porters, Sellum, and Telem, and25 And of Israel, of the sons of Pharos, Remeia, and Jezia, and Melchia, and Miamin, and Eliezer, and Melchia, and Banea.26 And of the sons of Elam, Mathania, Zacharias, annd Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jerimoth, and Elia.27 And of the sons of Zethua, Elioenai, Eliasib, Mathania, Jerimuth, and Zabad, and Aziaza.28 And of the sons of Babai, Johanan, Hanania, Zabbai, Athalai:29 And of the sons of Bani, Mosollam, and Melluch, and Adaia, Jasub, and Seal, and Ramoth.30 And of the sons of Phahath, Moab, Edna, and Chalal, Banaias, and Maasias, Mathanias, Beseleel, Bennui, and Manasse.31 And of the sons of Herem, Eliezer, Josue, Melchias, Semeias, Simeon,32 Benjamin, Maloch, Samarias.33 And of the sons of Hasom, Mathanai, Mathatha, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jermai, Manasse, Semei.34 Of the sons of Bani, Maaddi, Amran, and Uel,35 Baneas, and Badaias, Cheliau,36 Vania, Marimuth, and Eliasib,37 Mathanias, Mathania, and Jasi,38 And Bani, and Bennui, Semei,39 And Salmias, and Nathan, and Adaias,40 And Mechnedebai, Sisai, Sarai,41 Ezrel, and Selemiau, Semeria,42 Sellum, Amaria, Joseph.43 Of the sons of Nebo, Jehiel, Mathathias, Zabad, Zabina, Jeddu, and Joel, and Banaia.44 All these had taken strange wives, and there were among them women that had borne children.
