1 Fizeram os filhos de Israel o mal à vista de Jeová, e ele os entregou nas mãos de Midiã sete anos.2 A mão de Midiã prevaleceu sobre Israel, por cuja causa fizeram para si os filhos de Israel as covas que estão nos montes, e as cavernas, e as fortalezas.3 Tendo Israel feito as suas semeaduras, subiam contra ele os midianitas, os amalequitas e os filhos de Oriente;4 e acampando-se, destruíram as novidades da terra até a vizinhança de Gaza, e nada deixavam em Israel para sustentar a vida, nem ovelhas, nem bois, nem jumentos.5 Pois eles subiam com os seus gados e tendas, e vinham tanto eles como os seus camelos em multidão inumerável como gafanhotos: e entravam na terra para a destruir.6 Israel ficou muito extenuado por causa de Midiã; e clamavam os filhos de Israel a Jeová.7 Quando os filhos de Israel clamaram a Jeová por causa de Midiã,8 mandou-lhes ele um profeta que lhes disse: Assim diz Jeová, Deus de Israel: Eu vos fiz subir do Egito, e vos tirei da casa da servidão;9 e vos livrei das mãos dos egípcios, e de todos os que vos oprimiam, e os desapossei de diante de vós e dei-vos a sua terra.10 Eu vos disse: Eu sou Jeová vosso Deus; não temais os deuses dos amorreus, em cuja terra habitais. Porém não obedecestes à minha voz.11 Veio o anjo de Jeová, e sentou-se debaixo do terebinto que estava em Ofra, e pertencia a Joás, abiezrita, cujo filho Gideão estava malhando trigo no lagar, para o esconder dos midianitas.12 Então lhe apareceu o anjo de Jeová, e lhe disse: Jeová é contigo, valentíssimo varão.13 Respondeu-lhe Gideão: Ó senhor meu, se Jeová é conosco, por que então nos tem sucedido tudo isto? Onde estão todas as suas obras maravilhosas, de que nos falaram nossos pais, dizendo: Não nos fez Jeová subir do Egito? porém agora ele nos desamparou, e nos entregou nas mãos de Midiã.14 Virou-se para ele Jeová, e disse: Vai nessa tua força, e livra a Israel da mão de Midiã: porventura não te enviei?15 Replicou-lhe Gideão: Ó Senhor, como livrarei a Israel? eis que a minha família é a mais pobre em Manassés, e eu sou o menor na casa de meu pai.16 Tornou-lhe Jeová: Certamente serei contigo, e ferirás aos midianitas como a um só homem.17 Prosseguiu Gideão: Se achei graça aos teus olhos, dá-me um sinal de que tu és quem fala comigo.18 Não te vás daqui, até que eu volte, e traga o meu presente e ponha diante de ti. Respondeu ele: Eu esperarei até que voltes.19 Gideão entrou, e preparou um cabrito, e fez duma efa de farinha bolos asmos; pôs a carne num cesto, e o caldo numa panela, e trouxe-lhe tudo para debaixo do terebinto, e lho apresentou.20 Disse-lhe o anjo de Deus: Toma a carne e os bolos, põe-nos sobre esta rocha, e derrama-lhes por cima o caldo. Assim fez Gideão.21 Estendeu o anjo de Jeová a ponta da vara que tinha na mão, e tocou a carne e os bolos asmos; da rocha subiu fogo, e consumiu a carne e os bolos asmos; e o anjo de Jeová desapareceu-lhe dos olhos.22 Vendo que era o anjo de Jeová, disse Gideão: Ai de mim, Deus Jeová, porque vi o anjo de Jeová face a face.23 Disse-lhe Jeová: Paz seja contigo; não temas: não morrerás.24 Ali edificou Gideão um altar a Jeová, e chamou-lhe Jeová-Shalom: ainda está o altar até o dia de hoje em Ofra dos abiezritas.25 Naquela noite lhe disse Jeová: Toma o touro de teu pai, a saber, o segundo touro de sete anos, e derruba o altar de Baal, que é de teu pai, e corta a Aserá que está junto ao altar.26 Edifica um altar a Jeová teu Deus no cume deste lugar forte, na forma devida, toma o segundo touro, e oferece um holocausto, usando da lenha da Aserá que cortarás.27 Gideão tomou dez dos seus servos, e fez segundo Jeová lhe falara; mas porque teve medo da casa de seu pai, e dos homens da cidade, não o fez de dia, fê-lo de noite.28 Levantando-se os homens da cidade de madrugada, eis que estava o altar de Baal derrubado, cortada a Aserá que estava junto a ele, e oferecido o segundo touro sobre o altar que havia sido edificado.29 Falaram uns aos outros: Quem fez isto? Depois de investigarem e inquirirem, disseram: Foi Gideão, filho de Joás, quem fez isso.30 Os homens da cidade disseram a Joás: Tira para fora teu filho, para que morra, porque derrubou o altar de Baal, e cortou a Aserá que estava junto a ele.31 Respondeu Joás a todos os que se puseram contra ele: Pleiteareis vós por Baal? ou salvá-lo-eis vós? (Quem pleitear por ele, será morto ainda esta manhã.) Se ele é deus, pleiteie por si mesmo, porque alguém derrubou o seu altar.32 Naquele dia chamou a Gideão Jerubaal, dizendo: Pleiteie Baal contra ele, pois derrubou o seu altar.33 Ajuntaram-se todos os midianitas, os amalequitas, e os filhos do Oriente; passaram, e acamparam-se no vale de Jezreel.34 Mas o espírito de Jeová tomou posse de Gideão, que tocou o alarme; congregou-se Abiezer após ele.35 Enviou mensageiros por toda a tribo de Manassés, que se congregou após ele; enviou também mensageiros a Aser, a Zebulom e a Naftali, que lhes saíram ao encontro.36 Disse Gideão a Deus: Se tu hás de livrar a Israel por minha mão, como disseste,37 eis que porei eu um velo de lã na eira: se o orvalho estiver só no velo, e toda a terra ficar seca, conhecerei que hás de livrar a Israel por minha mão, como disseste.38 Assim sucedeu: porque se levantou cedo no dia seguinte, apertou o velo, e do velo espremeu o orvalho, enchendo de água uma taça.39 Disse mais Gideão a Deus: Não se acenda a tua ira contra mim, e só falarei mais uma vez. Permite que eu faça a prova ainda esta vez com o velo; rogo-te que só o velo esteja seco, e que haja orvalho sobre a terra toda.40 Deus assim o fez naquela noite: só no velo houve secura, e orvalho na terra toda.

1 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord: and he delivered them into the hand of Madian seven years.3 And they were grievously oppressed by them. And they made themselves dens and eaves in the mountains, and strong holds to resist.4 And when Israel had sown, Madian and Amalec, and the rest of the eastern nations came up:5 And pitching their tents among them, wasted all things as they were in the blade even to the entrance of Gaza: and they left nothing at all in Israel for sustenance of life, nor sheep, nor oxen, nor asses.6 For they and all their flocks came with their tents, and like locusts filled all places, an innumerable multitude of men, and of camels, wasting whatsoever they touched.7 And Israel was humbled exceedingly in the sight of Madian.8 And he cried to the Lord desiring help against the Madianites.9 And he sent unto them a prophet, and he spoke: Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I made you to come up out of Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage,10 And delivered you out of the hands of the Egyptians, and of all the enemies that afflicted you: and I cast them out at your coming in, and gave you their land.11 dummy verses inserted by amos12 And an angel of the Lord came, and sat under an oak, that was in Ephra, and belonged to Joas the father of the family of Ezri. And when Gedeon his son was threshing and cleansing wheat by the winepress, to flee from Madian,13 The angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said: The Lord is with thee, O most valiant of men.14 And Gedeon said to him: I beseech thee, my lord, if the Lord be with us, why have these evils fallen upon us? Where are his miracles, which our fathers have told us of, saying: The Lord brought us Out of Egypt? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the bands of Madian.15 And the Lord looked upon him, and said: Go in this thy strength, and then shalt deliver Israel out of the hand of Madian: know that I have sent thee.16 He answered and said: I beseech thee, my lord, wherewith shall I deliver Israel? Behold my family is the meanest in Manasses, and I am the least in my father's house.17 And the Lord said to him: I will be with thee: and thou shalt cut off Madian as one man.18 And he said: If I have found grace before thee, give me a sign that it is thou that speakest to me,19 And depart not hence, till I return to thee, and bring a sacrifice, and offer it to thee. And he answered: I will wait thy coming.20 So Gedeon went in, and boiled a kid, and made unleavened loaves of a measure of flour: and putting the flesh in a basket, and the broth of the flesh into a pot, he carried all under the oak, and presented to him.21 And the angel of the Lord said to him: Take the flesh and the unleavened loaves, and lay them upon that rock, and pour out the broth thereon. And when he had done so,22 The angel of the Lord put forth the tip of the rod, which he held in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened loaves: and there arose a fire from the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened loaves: and the angel of the Lord vanished out of his sight.23 And Gedeon seeing that it was the angel of the Lord, said: Alas, my Lord God: for I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.24 And the Lord said to him: Peace be with thee: fear not, thou shalt not die.25 And Gedeon built there an altar to the Lord, and called it the Lord's peace, until this present day. And when he was yet in Ephra, which is of the family of Ezri,26 That night the Lord said to him: Take a bullock of thy father's, and another bullock of seven years, and thou shalt destroy the altar of Baal, which is thy father's: and cut down the grove that is about the altar:27 And thou shalt build an altar to the Lord thy God in the top of this rock, whereupon thou didst lay the sacrifice before: and thou shalt take the second bullock, and shalt offer a holocaust upon a pile of the wood, which thou shalt cut down out of the grove.28 Then Gedeon taking ten men of his servants, did as the Lord had commanded him. But fearing his father's house, and the men of that city, he would not do it by day, but did all by night.29 And when the men of that town were risen in the morning, they saw the altar of Baal destroyed, and the grove cut down, and the second bullock laid upon the altar, which then was built.30 And they said one to another: Who hath done this? And when they inquired for the author of the fact, it was said: Gedeon the son of Joas did all this.31 And they said to Joas: Bring out thy son hither, that he may die: because he hath destroyed the altar of Baal, and hath cut down his grove.32 He answered them: Are you the avengers of Baal, that you fight for him? he that is his adversary, let him die before to morrow light appear: if he be a god, let him revenge himself on him that hath cast down his altar.33 From that day Gedeon was called Jerobaal, because Joss had said: Let Baal revenge himself on him that hath cast down his altar.34 Now all Madian, and Amalec, and the eastern people were gathered together, and passing over the Jordan, camped in the valley of Jezrael.35 But the spirit of the Lord came upon Gedeon, and be sounded the trumpet and called together the house of Abiezer, to follow him.36 And he sent messengers into all Manasses, and they also followed him: and other messengers into Aser and Zabulon and Nephtali, and they came to meet him.37 And Gedeon said to God: If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said,38 I will put this fleece of wool on the floor: if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry on all the ground beside, I, shall know that by my hand, as thou hast said, thou wilt deliver Israel.39 And it was so. And rising before day wringing the fleece, he filled a vessel with the dew.40 And he said again to God: let not thy wrath be kindled against me if I try once more, seeking a sign in the fleece. I pray that the fleece only may be dry, and all the ground wet with dew.41 And God did that night as he had requested: and it was dry on the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
