1 Ouvi agora o que diz Jeová: Levanta-te, contende perante os montes, e ouçam os outeiros a tua voz.2 Ouvi, montes, a controvérsia de Jeová, e vós, fundamentos duráveis da terra; porque Jeová tem uma controvérsia com o seu povo, e com Israel entrará em juízo.3 Povo meu, que é o que te hei feito? e com que te hei enfadado? dá testemunho contra mim.4 Pois te fiz sair da terra do Egito, e te remi da casa de escravidão; enviei adiante de ti a Moisés, a Aarão e a Miriam.5 Povo meu, lembra-te agora do que consultou Balaque, rei de Moabe, e o que lhe respondeu Balaão, filho de Beor; lembra-te desde Sitim até Gilgal, para que conheças as justiças de Jeová.6 Com que me apresentarei diante de Jeová, e me prostrarei perante o Deus excelso? apresentar-me-ei diante dele com holocaustos, com bezerros dum ano?7 Agradar-se-á Jeová de milhares de carneiros, ou com miríades de rios de azeite? darei o meu primogênito pela minha transgressão, o fruto do meu corpo pelo pecado da minha alma?8 Ele te há mostrado, ó homem, o que é bom; e que é o que Jeová requer de ti, senão que procedas com justiça, e ames a misericórdia, e andes humilde com o teu Deus?9 A voz de Jeová clama à cidade, e o homem de sabedoria verá o teu nome; ouvi a vara, e aquele que a ordenou.10 Porventura ainda há os tesouros da impiedade na casa dos ímpios, e o efa desfalcado que é abominável?11 Serei eu inocente com balanças injustas, e com uma bolsa de pesos enganosos?12 Pois os ricos da cidade estão cheios de violência, e os que habitam nela têm falado mentiras, e a língua deles é enganosa na sua boca.13 Portanto também eu te feri dum golpe mortal, e te fiz desolada por causa dos teus pecados.14 Tu comerás, e não te fartarás; a tua humilhação estará no meio de ti; removerás os teus bens, porém não os livrarás; e os que livrares, eu os entregarei à espada.15 Tu semearás, porém não ceifarás; pisarás a azeitona, porém não te ungirás de azeite; pisarás a víndima, porém não beberás o vinho.16 Pois se observam os estatutos de Onri, e todas as obras da casa de Acabe, e andais nos conselhos deles; para que eu te faça uma desolação, e os que habitam nela um objeto de vaias. Tereis sobre vós o opróbrio do meu povo.

1 Hear ye what the Lord saith: Arise, contend thou in judgment against the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.2 Let the mountains hear the judgment of the Lord, and the strong foundations of the earth: for the Lord will enter into judgment with his people, and he will plead against Israel.3 O my people, what have I done to thee, or in what have I molested thee? answer thou me.4 For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and delivered thee out of the house of slaves: and I sent before thy face Moses, and Aaron, and Mary.5 dummy verses inserted by amos6 O my people, remember, I pray thee, what Balach the king of Moab purposed: and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him, from Setim to Galgal, that thou mightest know the justices of the Lord.8 What shall I offer to the Lord that is worthy? wherewith shall I kneel before the high God? shall I offer holocausts unto him, and calves of a year old?9 May the Lord be appeased with thousands of rams, or with many thousands of fat he goats? shall I give my firstborn for my wickedness, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?10 I will shew thee, O man, what is good, and what the Lord requireth of thee: Verily, to do judgment, and to love mercy, and to walk solicitous with thy God.11 The voice of the Lord crieth to the city, and salvation shall be to them that fear thy name: hear, O ye tribes, and who shall approve it?12 As yet there is a fire in the house of the wicked, the treasures of iniquity, and a scant measure full of wrath.13 Shall I justify wicked balances, and the deceitful weights of the bag?14 By which her rich men were filled with iniquity, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue was deceitful in their mouth.15 And I therefore began to strike thee with desolation for thy sins.16 Thou shalt eat, but shalt not be filled: and thy humiliation shall be in the midst of thee: and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not save: and those whom thou shalt save, I will give up to the sword.17 Thou shalt sow, but shalt not reap: thou shalt tread the olives, but shalt not be anointed with the oil: and the new wine, but shalt not drink the wine.18 For thou hast kept the statutes of Amri, and all the works of the house of Achab: and thou hast walked according to their wills, that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof a hissing, and you shall bear the reproach of my people.
