1 A palavra que falou Jeová acerca de Babilônia, acerca da terra dos caldeus, por meio do profeta Jeremias.

2 Anunciai entre as nações e publicai, e arvorai um estandarte; publicai e não encubrais; dizei: Tomada está Babilônia, envergonhado Bel, espantado Merodaque; envergonhadas estão as suas imagens, espantados os seus ídolos.

3 Pois do norte vem contra ela uma nação, que tornará a sua terra em desolação, e ninguém habitará nela; tanto os homens como os animais já fugiram e se foram.

4 Naqueles dias e naquele tempo, diz Jeová, virão os filhos de Israel, juntamente com os filhos de Judá, seguirão o seu caminho chorando, e buscarão a Jeová seu Deus.

5 Tendo os seus rostos voltados para lá, indagarão acerca de Sião, dizendo: Vinde, e uni-vos a Jeová com uma aliança sempiterna que nunca será esquecida.

6 Ovelhas perdidas têm sido o meu povo; os seus pastores fizeram-nas errar, e voltar aos montes; do monte passaram ao outeiro, esqueceram-se do lugar do seu repouso.

7 Todos os que os acharam, os devoraram, e os seus adversários disseram: Não somos culpados; porque pecaram contra Jeová, morada de justiça, contra Jeová, esperança de seus pais.

8 Fugi do meio de Babilônia, e saí da terra dos caldeus, e sede como os bodes que vão adiante dos rebanhos.

9 Pois eis que suscitarei e farei vir da terra boreal contra Babilônia uma assembléia de grandes nações; por-se-ão em ordem contra ela, e dali será ela tomada. As suas flechas serão as de um valente perito que não tornará vazio.

10 Caldéia servirá de presa; e todos os que a despojaram, serão fartos, diz Jeová.

11 Porquanto vos alegrais, porquanto vos regozijais, ó vós que sequeais a minha herança, porquanto estais soltos como novilha que pisa o trigo, e rinchais como ginetes;

12 mui envergonhada será vossa mãe, confundida será a que vos deu à luz; eis que será a última das nações, erma, terra árida, e deserta.

13 Por causa do furor de Jeová não será habitada, mas será de todo desolada; todo o que passar por Babilônia, se espantará e assobiará por causa de todas as suas pragas.

14 Ponde-vos em ordem contra Babilônia ao redor, todos vós os que armais o arco; atirai-lhe, não poupeis as flechas; porque ela tem pecado contra Jeová.

15 Gritai contra ela ao redor; ela se submeteu, caídos estão os seus baluartes, derrubados os seus muros. Pois é vingança de Jeová; tomai vingança dela: como ela tem feito, assim fazei-lhe a ela.

16 Exterminai de Babilônia o que semeia e o que maneja a foice no tempo da ceifa; por causa da espada opressora tornarão cada um para o seu povo, e fugirão, cada um para a sua terra.

17 Israel é ovelha desgarrada que os leões afugentaram: devorou-o primeiro o rei da Assíria, e por fim este Nabucodonozor, rei de Babilônia, quebrou-lhe os ossos.

18 Portanto assim diz Jeová dos exércitos, Deus de Israel: Eis que castigarei o rei de Babilônia e a sua terra, como castiguei o rei da Assíria.

19 Farei voltar Israel para a sua morada, e pastará no Carmelo e em Basã, e a sua alma se fartará nos outeiros de Efraim e de Gileade.

20 Naqueles dias e naquele tempo, diz Jeová, buscar-se-á a iniqüidade de Israel, e não a haverá mais; e os pecados de Judá, e não se acharão: pois perdoarei aos que eu reservar.

21 Sobe à terra de Merataim, sobe contra ela e contra os habitantes de Pécode; mata e de todo destrói após eles, diz Jeová, e faze conforme tudo o que te ordenei.

22 Na terra há som de guerra, e de grande destruição.

23 Como está partido e quebrado o martelo de toda a terra! como se tornou Babilônia um espetáculo horrendo entre as nações!

24 Eu te enredei, e foste também tomada, ó Babilônia, e tu não o soubeste; estás surpreendida e também apanhada, porque tens provocado a Jeová.

25 Jeová acaba de abrir o seu arsenal, e tirar dele as armas da sua indignação; porque o Senhor, Jeová dos exércitos, tem que fazer na terra dos caldeus.

26 Vinde contra ela de todos os lados, abri os seus celeiros, fazei dela montões, e destruí-a de todo; não fique dela resto algum.

27 Matai a todos os seus novilhos; desçam eles ao degoladouro: ai deles! pois é chegado o seu dia, o tempo da sua visitação.

28 Eis a voz dos que fogem e escapam da terra de Babilônia para anunciar em Sião a vingança de Jeová, nosso Deus, a vingança do seu templo.

29 Convocai contra Babilônia os flecheiros, todos os que armam o arco; acampai-vos contra ela em redor; e não escape ninguém. Pagai-lhe conforme a sua obra; conforme tudo o que ela tem feito, assim lhe fazei a ela; porque se houve arrogantemente contra Jeová, contra o Santo de Israel.

30 Por isso os seus mancebos cairão nas suas ruas, e todos os seus homens de guerra serão reduzidos ao silêncio naquele dia, diz Jeová.

31 Eis que sou contra ti, ó orgulhosa, diz o Senhor, Jeová dos exércitos: pois é chegado o teu dia, o tempo em que te visitarei.

32 A orgulhosa tropeçará, e cairá, e ninguém a levantará; e acenderei fogo nas suas cidades, que devorará todos os que estão ao redor dela.

33 Assim diz Jeová dos exércitos: Os filhos de Israel e os filhos de Judá juntamente sofrem opressão; e todos os que os levaram cativos, os retêm; recusam deixa-los ir.

34 O redentor deles é forte; Jeová dos exércitos é o seu nome; certamente defenderá em juízo a causa deles, para dar descanso à terra, e para inquietar os habitantes de Babilônia.

35 A espada está sobre os caldeus, diz Jeová, e sobre os habitantes de Babilônia, e sobre os seus príncipes, e sobre os seus sábios.

36 A espada está sobre os paroleiros, e eles ficarão insensatos; a espada está sobre os seus valentes, e eles serão espantados.

37 A espada está sobre os seus cavalos, e sobre os seus carros, e sobre todo o povo misto que se acha no meio dela, e eles tornar-se-ão como mulheres; a espada está sobre os seus tesouros, e eles serão roubados.

38 A seca está sobre as suas águas, e elas secarão; pois é terra de imagens esculpidas, e pelos seus ídolos fazem-se loucos.

39 Portanto feras do deserto juntamente com lobos habitarão ali, e morarão nela avestruzes e nunca mais será habitada, nem servirá de moradia de geração em geração.

40 Como quando Deus subverteu a Sodoma e a Gomorra e as suas cidades vizinhas, diz Jeová, não habitará ali homem, nem nela peregrinará filho de homem.

41 Eis que um povo vem do norte; e uma grande nação e muitos reis serão suscitados dos últimos confins da terra.

42 Armam-se de arco e de lança; são cruéis, e não têm piedade; a voz deles brama como o mar, e montam em cavalos, cada um posto em ordem, como homem para a batalha, contra ti, ó filha de Babilônia.

43 Já ouviu o rei de Babilônia a fama deles, e desfalecem as suas mãos; dele se apoderou a angústia, e dores como as da mulher que está de parto.

44 Eis que subirá um inimigo, como leão, da soberba do Jordão contra a morada forte; mas de repente o farei correr dela; quem for escolhido, po-lo-ei sobre ela. Pois quem há semelhante a mim? quem me fixará um prazo? e quem é o pastor que me poderá resistir.

45 Portanto ouvi o conselho de Jeová, que tomou contra Babilônia, e os desígnios que formou contra a terra dos caldeus: certamente eles, os mais pequenos do rebanho, serão arrastados; certamente a sua habitação será espantada por causa deles.

46 Ao estrondo da tomada de Babilônia, estremece a terra; e ouve-se entre as nações o grito.

1 The word that the LORD spake concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, by Jeremiah the prophet. 2 Declare ye among the nations and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is put to shame, Merodach is dismayed; her images are put to shame, her idols are dismayed. 3 For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they are fled, they are gone, both man and beast. 4 In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together; they shall go on their way weeping, and shall seek the LORD their God. 5 They shall inquire concerning Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come ye, and join yourselves to the LORD in an everlasting covenant that shall not be forgotten. 6 My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place. 7 All that found them have devoured them: and their adversaries said, We offend not, because they have sinned against the LORD, the habitation of justice, even the LORD, the hope of their fathers. 8 Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he-goats before the flocks. 9 For, lo, I will stir up and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of an expert mighty man; none shall return in vain. 10 And Chaldea shall be a spoil: all that spoil her shall be satisfied, saith the LORD. 11 Because ye are glad, because ye rejoice, O ye that plunder mine heritage, because ye are wanton as an heifer that treadeth out the corn, and neigh as strong horses; 12 your mother shall be sore ashamed; she that bare you shall be confounded: behold, she shall be the hindermost of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert. 13 Because of the wrath of the LORD it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues. 14 Set yourselves in array against Babylon round about, all ye that bend the bow; shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against the LORD. 15 Shout against her round about; she hath submitted herself; her bulwarks are fallen, her walls are thrown down: for it is the vengeance of the LORD; take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her. 16 Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land. 17 Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: first the king of Assyria hath devoured him; and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones. 18 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria; 19 And I will bring Israel again to his pasture, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead. 20 In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I leave as a remnant. 21 Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: slay and utterly destroy after them, saith the LORD, and do according to all that I have commanded thee. 22 A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction. 23 How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations! 24 I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against the LORD. 25 The LORD hath opened his armoury, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation: for the Lord, the LORD of hosts, hath a work to do in the land of the Chaldeans. 26 Come against her from the utmost border, open her storehouses: cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: let nothing of her be left. 27 Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation. 28 The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance of his temple. 29 Call together the archers against Babylon, all them that bend the bow; camp against her round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel. 30 Therefore shall her young men fall in her streets, and all her men of war shall be brought to silence in that day, saith the LORD. 31 Behold, I am against thee, O thou proud one, saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts: for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee. 32 And the proud one shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all that are round about him. 33 Thus saith the LORD of hosts: The children of Israel and the children of Judah are oppressed together: and all that took them captives hold them fast; they refuse to let them go. 34 Their redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon. 35 A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the LORD, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men. 36 A sword is upon the boasters, and they shall dote: a sword is upon her mighty men, and they shall be dismayed. 37 A sword is upon their horse, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her, and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures, and they shall be robbed. 38 A drought is upon her waters, and they shall be dried up: for it is a land of graven images, and they are mad upon idols. 39 Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wolves shall dwell there, and the ostriches shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation. 40 As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man dwell there, neither shall any son of man sojourn therein. 41 Behold, a people cometh from the north; and a great nation, and many kings shall be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the earth. 42 They lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea, and they ride upon horses; every one set in array, as man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon. 43 The king of Babylon hath heard the fame of them, and his hands wax feeble: anguish hath taken hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail. 44 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the pride of Jordan against the strong habitation: but I will suddenly make them run away from her; and whoso is chosen, him will I appoint over her: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? and who is the shepherd that will stand before me? 45 Therefore hear ye the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely they shall drag them away, even the little ones of the flock; surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them. 46 At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth trembleth, and the cry is heard among the nations.
