Abimeleque, filho de Jerubaal, foi a Siquém, aos irmãos de sua mãe, e falou com eles e com toda a parentela da casa de seu avô materno, dizendo: 
Falai aos ouvidos de todos os cidadãos de Siquém: Qual é melhor para vós, que todos os filhos de Jerubaal, setenta pessoas vos dominem, ou que um só domine sobre vós? Lembrai-vos também de que eu sou osso vosso e carne vossa. 
Os irmãos de sua mãe falaram essas palavras a respeito dele aos ouvidos de todos os cidadãos de Siquém; e inclinaram-se os corações deles a seguir a Abimeleque, porque disseram: É nosso irmão. 
Deram-lhe setenta siclos de prata do templo de Baal-Berite, com os quais alugou Abimeleque a uns homens miseráveis e atrevidos, que o seguiram. 
Foi à casa de seu pai, a Ofra, e matou a seus irmãos, filhos de Jerubaal, umas setenta pessoas, sobre uma mesma pedra: mas Jotão, filho mais moço de Jerubaal, foi deixado, pois se escondeu. 
Então se ajuntaram todos os cidadãos de Siquém, e toda Bete-Milo, e foram e constituíram rei a Abimeleque junto ao terebinto da coluna que havia em Siquém. 
Tendo sido avisado disso Jotão, foi e pôs-se de pé no cume do monte Gerizim; e levantando a voz, clamou e disse-lhes: Ouvi-me, cidadãos de Siquém, para que Deus vos ouça a vós. 
Foram uma vez as árvores a ungir sobre si um rei; e disseram à oliveira: Reina sobre nós. 
Mas a oliveira respondeu-lhes: Deixarei, porventura, a minha gordura de que se usa para honrar aos deuses e aos homens, e irei a dominar sobre as árvores? 
Disseram as árvores à figueira: Vem tu, e reina sobre nós. 
Mas a figueira respondeu-lhes: Deixarei, porventura, a minha doçura e boas novidades, e irei a dominar sobre as árvores? 
Disseram as árvores à videira: Vem tu, e reina sobre nós. 
Respondeu-lhes a videira: Deixarei, porventura, o meu suco, que alegra aos deuses e aos homens e irei a dominar sobre as árvores? 
Todas as árvores disseram ao espinheiro: Vem tu, e reina sobre nós? 
Respondeu o espinheiro às árvores: Se vós, na verdade, me ungis por vosso rei, vinde e refugiai-vos debaixo da minha sombra; mas, se não, do espinheiro sairá fogo, e devorará os cedros do Líbano. 
Agora se de boa fé e com retidão procedestes, constituindo rei a Abimeleque, se vos portastes bem com Jerubaal e com a sua casa e lhe fizestes conforme os seus merecimentos 
(meu pai pelejou por vós, expôs a sua vida aos perigos e vos livrou do poder de Midiã: 
porém vós hoje vos levantastes contra a casa de meu pai, matastes a seus filhos, umas setenta pessoas, sobre uma mesma pedra, e fizestes reinar sobre os cidadãos de Siquém a Abimeleque, filho de uma sua escrava, porque é vosso, irmão); 
se vos tendes portado hoje de boa fé e com retidão para com Jerubaal e para com a sua casa, alegrai-vos em Abimeleque, e ele também se alegre em vós: 
mas, se não, de Abimeleque sairá fogo, e devorará os cidadãos de Siquém e a Bete-Milo; dos cidadãos de Siquém e de Bete-Milo sairá fogo, e devorará a Abimeleque. 
Então partiu Jotão, fugiu e foi a Beer, e ali habitou por temer a seu irmão Abimeleque. 
Reinou Abimeleque sobre Israel três anos. 
Deus enviou um espírito mau para o meio de Abimeleque e dos cidadãos de Siquém; estes se houveram aleivosamente contra Abimeleque, 
para que a violência praticada contra os setenta filhos de Jerubaal aparecesse, e para que o sangue deles caísse sobre Abimeleque, seu irmão, que os matou, e sobre os de Siquém, que lhe auxiliaram para tirar a vida a seus irmãos. 
Puseram-lhe os cidadãos de Siquém emboscadas nos cumes dos outeiros, e roubaram a todos os que passavam por eles na estrada: disto foi avisado Abimeleque. 
Veio Gaal, filho de Ebede, com seus irmãos, e estabeleceu-se em Siquém; e confiaram nele os cidadãos de Siquém. 
Saindo ao campo, vindimaram as suas vinhas, pisaram as uvas e fizeram uma festa; e, tendo entrado no templo do seu deus, comeram, beberam e amaldiçoaram a Abimeleque. 
Disse Gaal, filho de Ebede: Quem é Abimeleque, e quem é Siquém, para que o sirvamos? não é, porventura, filho de Jerubaal? não é Zebul o seu legado? Servi antes aos homens de Hamor, pai de Siquém: mas nós porque o serviremos? 
Prouvera a Deus que este povo estivesse sob a minha direção; pois eu expeliria a Abimeleque. Disse a Abimeleque: Aumenta o teu exército, e sai. 
Tendo Zebul, governador da cidade, ouvido as palavras de Gaal, filho de Ebede, acendeu-se em ira. 
Enviou astutamente a Abimeleque mensageiros que lhe dissessem: Eis que Gaal, filho de Ebede, e seus irmãos são vindos a Siquém, e procuram sublevar a cidade contra ti. 
Agora levanta-te de noite, tu e o povo que estiver contigo, e deixa-te estar escondido no campo; 
e pela manhã, logo que nascer o sol, levantar-te-ás e darás de golpe sobre a cidade: saindo contra ti Gaal com a sua gente, far-lhe-ás, como te permitirem as circunstâncias. 
Levantou-se de noite Abimeleque com toda a sua gente; e divididos em quatro companhias puseram emboscadas a Siquém. 
Saiu Gaal, filho de Ebede, e pôs-se à entrada da cidade; e levantou-se do lugar das emboscadas Abimeleque e o povo que estava com ele. 
Quando Gaal viu ao povo, disse a Zebul: Eis que desce gente dos cumes dos outeiros. respondeu-lhe Zebul: Tu vês as sombras dos outeiros, como se fossem homens. 
Mas Gaal tornou a falar, e disse: Está descendo gente de perto do umbigo da terra, e vem vindo uma companhia do caminho do terebinto de Meonenim. 
Então lhe disse Zebul: Onde está agora a tua boca, com a qual dizias: Quem é Abimeleque, para que o sirvamos? não é este o povo que desprezavas? sai agora e peleja contra ele. 
Saiu Gaal à vista dos cidadãos de Siquém e pelejou contra Abimeleque. 
Abimeleque o perseguiu, e fugiu Gaal diante dele, muitos caíram feridos até a entrada da porta. 
Abimeleque habitou em Arumá: e Zebul expeliu a Gaal e a seus irmãos, para que não habitassem em Siquém. 
No dia seguinte saiu o povo ao campo; disto foi avisado Abimeleque, 
que tomou a sua gente, a dividiu em três companhias e pôs emboscadas no campo. Olhou, e eis que o povo saía da cidade, pelo que se levantou contra eles e os feriu. 
Abimeleque e as companhias que com ele estavam, correram e puseram-se à entrada da cidade; as outras duas companhias deram de improviso sobre todos os que estavam no campo, e os feriram. 
Abimeleque pelejou contra a cidade todo aquele dia, tomou-a e matou ao povo que nela se achava; e assolando-a, a semeou de sal. 
Tendo ouvido isso todos os habitantes de Migdol-Siquém, entraram no esconderijo no templo de El-Berite. 
Abimeleque foi avisado de que se achavam congregados todos os habitantes de Migdol-Siquém. 
Subiu ao monte Zalmom, ele e toda a sua gente; e, tomando um machado na mão, cortou um ramo de árvore, levantou-o e pô-lo no ombro, e disse ao povo que estava com ele: O que me viste fazer, fazei-o também depressa. 
Assim todo o povo cortou cada um o seu ramo, e seguiram a Abimeleque; e tendo posto os ramos junto ao esconderijo, o incendiaram sobre eles, de sorte que morreram também todos os habitantes de Migdol-Siquém, quase mil pessoas, homens e mulheres. 
Depois foi Abimeleque a Tebes, a qual sitiou e tomou. 
Havia, porém, no meio da cidade uma torre forte, para onde se refugiaram todos os homens e mulheres, a saber, todos os habitantes da cidade que, fechadas as portas, subiram ao eirado da torre. 
Chegando Abimeleque à torre, pelejou contra ela e aproximou-se da porta para a incendiar. 
Uma mulher lançou a pedra superior de um moinho sobre a cabeça de Abimeleque, e quebrou-lhe o crânio. 
Então chamou depressa ao moço, seu escudeiro, e lhe disse: Desembainha a tua espada, e mata-me, para que não se diga de mim: Uma mulher matou-o. O moço atravessou-o, e ele morreu. 
Vendo os homens de Israel que Abimeleque já era morto, foram-se cada um para o seu lugar. 
Assim Deus fez cair sobre Abimeleque o mal que tinha feito a seu pai, tirando a vida a seus setenta irmãos. 
Também toda a maldade dos homens de Siquém, fê-la cair sobre a cabeça deles; e veio sobre eles a maldição de Jotão, filho de Jerubaal. 

and Abimelech son of Jerubbaal goeth to Shechem, unto his mother`s brethren, and speaketh unto them, and unto all the family of the house of his mother`s father, saying, 
`Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, Which [is] good for you -- the ruling over you of seventy men (all the sons of Jerubbaal), or the ruling over you of one man? -- and ye have remembered that I [am] your bone and your flesh.` 
And his mother`s brethren speak concerning him, in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, all these words, and their heart inclineth after Abimelech, for they said, `He [is] our brother;` 
and they give to him seventy silverings out of the house of Baal-Berith, and Abimelech hireth with them men, vain and unstable, and they go after him; 
and he goeth into the house of his father at Ophrah, and slayeth his brethren, sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone; and Jotham, youngest son of Jerubbaal, is left, for he was hidden. 
And all the masters of Shechem are gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and come and cause Abimelech to reign for king at the oak of the camp which [is] in Shechem; 
and they declare [it] to Jotham, and he goeth and standeth on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifteth up his voice, and calleth, and saith to them, `Hearken unto me, O masters of Shechem, and God doth hearken unto you: 
`The trees have diligently gone to anoint over them a king, and they say to the olive, Reign thou over us. 
And the olive saith to them, Have I ceased from my fatness, by which they honour gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees? 
And the trees say to the fig, Come thou, reign over us. 
And the fig saith to them, Have I ceased from my sweetness, and my good increase, that I have gone to stagger over the trees? 
`And the trees say to the vine, Come thou, reign over us. 
And the vine saith to them, Have I ceased from my new wine, which is rejoicing gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees? 
And all the trees say unto the bramble, Come thou, reign over us. 
And the bramble saith unto the trees, If in truth ye are anointing me for king over you, come, take refuge in my shadow; and if not -- fire cometh out from the bramble, and devoureth the cedars of Lebanon. 
`And, now, if in truth and in sincerity ye have acted, when ye make Abimelech king; and if ye have done good with Jerubbaal, and with his house; and if according to the deed of his hands ye have done to him -- 
because my father hath fought for you, and doth cast away his life from [him], and deliver you from the hand of Midian; 
and ye have risen against the house of my father to-day, and slay his sons, seventy men, on one stone, and cause Abimelech son of his handmaid to reign over the masters of Shechem, because he [is] your brother -- 
yea, if in truth and in sincerity ye have acted with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, rejoice ye in Abimelech, and he doth rejoice -- even he -- in you; 
and if not -- fire cometh out from Abimelech and devoureth the masters of Shechem and the house of Millo, and fire cometh out from the masters of Shechem and from the house of Millo, and devoureth Abimelech.` 
And Jotham hasteth, and fleeth, and goeth to Beer, and dwelleth there, from the face of Abimelech his brother. 
And Abimelech is prince over Israel three years, 
and God sendeth an evil spirit between Abimelech and the masters of Shechem, and the masters of Shechem deal treacherously with Abimelech, 
for the coming in of the violence [to] the seventy sons of Jerubbaal, and of their blood to place [it] on Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and on the masters of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brethren. 
And the masters of Shechem set for him ambushes on the top of the hills, and rob every one who passeth over by them in the way, and it is declared to Abimelech. 
And Gaal son of Ebed cometh -- also his brethren -- and they pass over into Shechem, and the masters of Shechem trust in him, 
and go out into the field, and gather their vineyards, and tread, and make praises, and go into the house of their god, and eat and drink, and revile Abimelech. 
And Gaal son of Ebed saith, `Who [is] Abimelech, and who [is] Shechem, that we serve him? is [he] not son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his commander? Serve ye the men of Hamor father of Shechem, and wherefore do we serve him -- we? 
and oh that this people were in my hand -- then I turn Abimelech aside;` and he saith to Abimelech, `Increase thy host, and come out.` 
And Zebul, prince of the city, heareth the words of Gaal son of Ebed, and his anger burneth, 
and he sendeth messengers unto Abimelech deceitfully, saying, `Lo, Gaal son of Ebed and his brethren are coming into Shechem, and lo, they are fortifying the city against thee; 
and, now, rise by night, thou and the people who [are] with thee, and lay wait in the field, 
and it hath been, in the morning, about the rising of the sun, thou dost rise early, and hast pushed against the city; and lo, he and the people who [are] with him are going out unto thee -- and thou hast done to him as thy hand doth find.` 
And Abimelech riseth, and all the people who [are] with him, by night, and they lay wait against Shechem -- four detachments; 
and Gaal son of Ebed goeth out, and standeth at the opening of the gate of the city, and Abimelech riseth -- also the people who [are] with him -- from the ambush, 
and Gaal seeth the people, and saith unto Zebul, `Lo, people are coming down from the top of the hills;` and Zebul saith unto him, `The shadow of the hills thou art seeing like men.` 
And Gaal addeth yet to speak, and saith, `Lo, people are coming down from the high part of the land, and another detachment is coming by the way of the oak of Meonenim.` 
And Zebul saith unto him, `Where [is] now thy mouth, in that thou sayest, Who [is] Abimelech that we serve him? is not this the people against which thou hast kicked? go out, I pray thee now, and fight against it.` 
And Gaal goeth out before the masters of Shechem, and fighteth against Abimelech, 
and Abimelech pursueth him, and he fleeth from his presence, and many fall wounded -- unto the opening of the gate. 
And Abimelech abideth in Arumah, and Zebul casteth out Gaal and his brethren from dwelling in Shechem. 
And it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that the people go out to the field, and they declare [it] to Abimelech, 
and he taketh the people, and divideth them into three detachments, and layeth wait in a field, and looketh, and lo, the people are coming out from the city, and he riseth against them, and smiteth them. 
And Abimelech and the detachments who [are] with him have pushed on, and stand at the opening of the gate of the city, and the two detachments have pushed against all who are in the field, and smite them, 
and Abimelech hath fought against the city all that day, and captureth the city, and the people who [are] in it he hath slain, and he breaketh down the city, and soweth it [with] salt. 
And all the masters of the tower of Shechem hear, and go in unto the high place of the house of the god Berith, 
and it is declared to Abimelech that all the masters of the tower of Shechem have gathered themselves together, 
and Abimelech goeth up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people who [are] with him, and Abimelech taketh the great axe in his hand, and cutteth off a bough of the trees, and lifteth it up, and setteth [it] on his shoulder, and saith unto the people who [are] with him, `What ye have seen I have done -- haste, do ye like it.` 
And all the people also cut down each one his bough, and go after Abimelech, and set [them] at the high place, and burn by these the high place with fire, and also all the men of the tower of Shechem die, about a thousand men and women. 
And Abimelech goeth unto Thebez, and encampeth against Thebez, and captureth it, 
and a strong tower hath been in the midst of the city, and thither flee do all the men and the women, and all the masters of the city, and they shut [it] behind them, and go up on the roof of the tower. 
And Abimelech cometh unto the tower, and fighteth against it, and draweth nigh unto the opening of the tower to burn it with fire, 
and a certain woman doth cast a piece of a rider on the head of Abimelech, and breaketh his skull, 
and he calleth hastily unto the young man bearing his weapons, and saith to him, `Draw thy sword, and thou hast put me to death, lest they say of me -- A woman slew him;` and his young man pierced him through, and he dieth. 
And the men of Israel see that Abimelech [is] dead, and go each one to his place; 
and God turneth back the evil of Abimelech which he did to his father to slay his seventy brethren; 
and all the evil of the men of Shechem hath God turned back on their head, and come unto them doth the cursing of Jotham son of Jerubbaal.
