1 Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.2 Open your{+} hearts to us: we wronged no man, we corrupted no man, we took advantage of no man.3 I don't say it to condemn [you{+}]: for I have said before, that you{+} are in our hearts to die together and live together.4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you{+}, great is my glorying on your{+} behalf: I am filled with comfort, I overflow with joy in all our affliction.5 For even when we had come into Macedonia our flesh had no relief, but [we were] afflicted on every side; outside [were] fightings, inside [were] fears.6 Nevertheless he who comforts the lowly, [even] God, comforted us by the coming of Titus;7 and not by his coming only, but also by the comfort with which he was comforted in you{+}, while he told us your{+} longing, your{+} mourning, your{+} zeal for me; so that I rejoiced yet more.8 For though I made you{+} sorry with my letter, I do not regret it: though I did regret [it] (for I see that that letter made you{+} sorry, though but for a season),9 I now rejoice, not that you{+} were made sorry, but that you{+} were made sorry to repentance; for you{+} were made sorry after a godly sort, that you{+} might suffer loss by us in nothing.10 For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, [a repentance] which brings no regret: but the sorrow of the world works death.11 For look, this very same thing, that you{+} were made sorry after a godly sort, what earnest care it worked in you{+}, yes what clearing of yourselves, yes what indignation, yes what fear, yes what longing, yes what zeal, yes what avenging! In everything you{+} approved yourselves to be pure in the matter.12 So although I wrote to you{+}, I did not [write] for his cause that did the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered the wrong, but that your{+} earnest care for us might be made manifest to you{+} in the sight of God.13 Therefore we have been comforted: And in our comfort we joyed the more exceedingly for the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you{+}.14 For if in anything I have gloried to him on your{+} behalf, I was not put to shame; but as we spoke all things to you{+} in truth, so our glorying also which I made before Titus was found to be truth.15 And his affection is more abundantly toward you{+}, while he remembers the obedience of all of you{+}, how with fear and trembling you{+} received him.16 I rejoice that in everything I am of good courage concerning you{+}.

1 Amados, visto que temos essas promessas, purifiquemo-nos de tudo o que contamina o corpo e o espírito, aperfeiçoando a santidade no temor de Deus.2 Concedam-nos lugar no coração de vocês. A ninguém prejudicamos, a ninguém causamos dano, a ninguém exploramos.3 Não digo isso para condená-los; já lhes disse que vocês estão em nosso coração para juntos morrermos ou vivermos.4 Tenho grande confiança em vocês, e de vocês tenho muito orgulho. Sinto-me bastante encorajado; minha alegria transborda em todas as tribulações.5 Pois, quando chegamos à Macedônia, não tivemos nenhum descanso, mas fomos atribulados de toda forma: conflitos externos, temores internos.6 Deus, porém, que consola os abatidos, consolou-nos com a chegada de Tito,7 e não apenas com a vinda dele, mas também com a consolação que vocês lhe ministraram. Ele nos falou da saudade, da tristeza e da preocupação de vocês por mim, de modo que a minha alegria se tornou ainda maior.8 Mesmo que a minha carta lhes tenha causado tristeza, não me arrependo. É verdade que a princípio me arrependi, pois percebi que a minha carta os entristeceu, ainda que por pouco tempo. 9 Agora, porém, me alegro, não porque vocês foram entristecidos, mas porque a tristeza os levou ao arrependimento. Pois vocês se entristeceram como Deus desejava, e de forma alguma foram prejudicados por nossa causa.9 A tristeza segundo Deus produz um arrependimento que leva à salvação e não remorso, mas a tristeza segundo o mundo produz morte.10 Vejam o que esta tristeza segundo Deus produziu em vocês: que dedicação, que desculpas, que indignação, que temor, que saudade, que preocupação, que desejo de ver a justiça feita! Em tudo vocês se mostraram inocentes a esse respeito.11 Assim, se lhes escrevi, não foi por causa daquele que cometeu o erro nem daquele que foi prejudicado, mas para que diante de Deus vocês pudessem ver por si próprios como são dedicados a nós.12 Por isso tudo fomos revigorados.13 de encorajados, ficamos mais contentes ainda ao ver como Tito estava alegre, porque seu espírito recebeu refrigério de todos vocês.14 Eu lhe tinha dito que estava orgulhoso de vocês, e vocês não me decepcionaram. Da mesma forma como era verdade tudo o que lhes dissemos, o orgulho que temos de vocês diante de Tito também mostrou-se verdadeiro.15 E a afeição dele por vocês fica maior ainda, quando lembra que todos vocês foram obedientes, recebendo-o com temor e tremor.16 Alegro-me por poder ter plena confiança em vocês.
