1 And the sons of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh; and Yahweh delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.2 And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and had not given birth.3 And the angel of Yahweh appeared to the woman, and said to her, Look now, you are barren, and have not given birth; but you will become pregnant, and give birth to a son.4 Now therefore beware, I pray you, and drink no wine nor strong drink, and don't eat any unclean thing:5 for, look, you will become pregnant, and give birth to a son; and no razor will come upon his head; for the lad will be a Nazirite to God from the womb: and he will begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.6 Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came to me, and his countenance was like the countenance of the angel of God, very awesome; and I did not ask him from where he was, neither did he tell me his name:7 but he said to me, Look, you will become pregnant, and give birth to a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, and don't eat any unclean thing; for the lad will be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.8 Then Manoah entreated Yahweh, and said, Oh, Lord, I pray you, let the man of God whom you sent come again to us, and teach us what we will do to the lad that will be born.9 And God listened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field: but her husband Manoah wasn't with her.10 And the woman hurried, and ran, and told her husband, and said to him, Look, the man has appeared to me, that came to me the [other] day.11 And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said to him, Are you the man that spoke to the woman? And he said, I am.12 And Manoah said, Now let your words come to pass: what will be the ordering of the lad, and [how] shall we do to him?13 And the angel of Yahweh said to Manoah, Of all that I said to the woman let her beware.14 She may not eat of anything that comes of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; all that I commanded her let her observe.15 And Manoah said to the angel of Yahweh, I pray you, let us detain you, that we may make ready a young goat for you.16 And the angel of Yahweh said to Manoah, Though you detain me, I will not eat of your bread; and if you will make ready a burnt-offering, you must offer it to Yahweh. For Manoah didn't know that he was the angel of Yahweh.17 And Manoah said to the angel of Yahweh, What is your name, that, when your words come to pass, we may honor you?18 And the angel of Yahweh said to him, Why do you ask after my name, seeing it is wonderful?19 So Manoah took the young goat with the meal-offering, and offered it on the rock to Yahweh: and [the angel] did wondrously, and Manoah and his wife looked on.20 For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of Yahweh ascended in the flame of the altar: and Manoah and his wife looked on; and they fell on their faces to the ground.21 But the angel of Yahweh did not appear anymore to Manoah or to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of Yahweh.22 And Manoah said to his wife, We will surely die, because we have seen God.23 But his wife said to him, If Yahweh desired to kill us, he would not have received a burnt-offering and a meal-offering at our hand, neither would he have shown us all these things, nor would at this time have told such things as these.24 And the woman bore a son, and named him Samson: and the lad grew, and Yahweh blessed him.25 And the Spirit of Yahweh began to move him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

1 Os israelitas voltaram a fazer o que o Senhor reprova, e por isso o Senhor os entregou nas mãos dos filisteus durante quarenta anos.2 Certo homem de Zorá, chamado Manoá, do clã da tribo de Dã, tinha mulher estéril.3 Certo dia o anjo do Senhor apareceu a ela e lhe disse: "Você é estéril, não tem filhos, mas engravidará e dará à luz um filho.4 Todavia, tenha cuidado, não beba vinho nem outra bebida fermentada, e não coma nada impuro;5 e não se passará navalha na cabeça do filho que você vai ter, porque o menino será nazireu, consagrado a Deus desde o nascimento; ele iniciará a libertação de Israel das mãos dos filisteus".6 Então a mulher foi contar tudo ao seu marido: "Um homem de Deus veio falar comigo. Era como um anjo de Deus, de aparência impressionante. Não lhe perguntei de onde tinha vindo, e ele não me disse o seu nome,7 mas ele me assegurou: ‘Você engravidará e dará à luz um filho. Todavia, não beba vinho nem outra bebida fermentada, e não coma nada impuro, porque o menino será nazireu, consagrado a Deus, desde o nascimento até o dia da sua morte’ ".8 Então Manoá orou ao Senhor: "Senhor, eu te imploro que o homem de Deus que enviaste volte para nos instruir sobre o que fazer com o menino que vai nascer".9 Deus ouviu a oração de Manoá, e o anjo de Deus veio novamente falar com a mulher quando ela estava sentada no campo; Manoá, seu marido, não estava com ela.10 Mas ela foi correndo contar ao marido: "O homem que me apareceu outro dia está aqui! "11 Manoá levantou-se e seguiu a mulher. Quando se aproximou do homem, perguntou: "És tu o que falaste com a minha mulher? " "Sim", disse ele.12 "Quando as suas palavras se cumprirem", Manoá perguntou, "como devemos criar o menino? O que ele deverá fazer? "13 O Anjo do Senhor respondeu: "Sua mulher terá que seguir tudo o que eu lhe ordenei.14 Ela não poderá comer nenhum produto da videira, nem vinho ou bebida fermentada, nem comer nada impuro. Terá que obedecer a tudo o que lhe ordenei".15 Manoá disse ao Anjo do Senhor: "Gostaríamos que ficasses conosco; queremos oferecer-te um cabrito".16 O anjo do Senhor respondeu: "Se eu ficar, não comerei nada. Mas, se você preparar um holocausto, ofereça-o ao Senhor". Manoá não sabia que ele era o anjo do Senhor.17 Então Manoá perguntou ao anjo do Senhor: "Qual é o teu nome, para que te prestemos homenagem quando se cumprir a tua palavra? "18 Ele respondeu: "Por que pergunta o meu nome? Meu nome está além do entendimento".19 Então Manoá apanhou um cabrito e a oferta de cereal, e os ofereceu ao Senhor sobre uma rocha. E o Senhor fez algo estranho enquanto Manoá e sua mulher observavam:20 Quando a chama do altar subiu ao céu, o Anjo do Senhor subiu na chama. Vendo isso, Manoá e à sua mulher prostraram-se, rosto em terra.21 Como o Anjo do Senhor não voltou a manifestar-se a Manoá e à sua mulher, Manoá percebeu que era o Anjo do Senhor.22 "Sem dúvida vamos morrer! " disse ele à mulher, "pois vimos a Deus! "23 Mas a sua mulher respondeu: "Se o Senhor tivesse a intenção de nos matar, não teria aceitado o holocausto e a oferta de cereal das nossas mãos, nem nos teria mostrado todas essas coisas, nem nos teria revelado o que agora nos revelou".24 A mulher deu à luz um menino e pôs-lhe o nome de Sansão. Ele cresceu, e o Senhor o abençoou,25 e o Espírito do Senhor começou a agir nele quando ele se achava em Maané-Dã, entre Zorá e Estaol.
