1 I say the truth in Christ, I do not lie, my conscience bearing witness with me in the Holy Spirit,2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing pain in my heart.3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brothers' sake, my kinsmen according to the flesh:4 who are Israelites; whose is the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service [of God], and the promises;5 whose are the fathers, and of whom is Christ as concerning the flesh. May God, who is over all, be blessed forever. Amen.6 But [it is] not as though the word of God has come to nothing. For they are not all Israel, who are of Israel:7 neither, because they are Abraham's seed, are they all children: but, In Isaac will your seed be called.8 That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God; but the children of the promise are reckoned for a seed.9 For this is a word of promise, According to this season I will come, and Sarah will have a son.10 And not only so; but Rebecca also having conceived by one, [even] by our father Isaac--11 for [the children] not being yet born, neither having participated in anything good or bad, that the purpose of God according to election might stay,12 not of works, but of him who calls, it was said to her, The elder will serve as a slave to the younger.13 According to as it is written, Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.15 For he says to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.16 So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who has mercy.17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, For this very purpose I raised you up, that I might show in you my power, and that my name might be published abroad in all the earth.18 So then he has mercy on whom he wants, and he hardens whom he wants.19 You will say then to me, Why then does he still find fault? For who withstands his will?20 On the contrary, O man, who are you that reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, Why did you make me thus?21 Or has not the potter a right over the clay, from the same lump to make one part a vessel to honor, and another to shame?22 What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much long-suffering vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:23 and that he might make known the riches of his glory on vessels of mercy, which he prepared in advance to glory,24 [even] us, whom he also called, not from the Jews only, but also from the Gentiles?25 As he says also in Hosea, I will call that my people, which was not my people; And her beloved, that was not beloved.26 And it will be, [that] in the place where it was said to them, You{+} are not my people, There they will be called sons of the living God.27 And Isaiah cries concerning Israel, If the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, it is the remnant that will be saved:28 for the Lord will execute [his] word on the earth, finishing it and cutting it short.29 And, as Isaiah has said before, Except Yahweh of hosts had left us a seed, We had become as Sodom, and had been made like Gomorrah.30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, who did not follow after righteousness, attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith:31 but Israel, following after a law of righteousness, did not arrive at [that] law.32 Why? Because [they sought it] not by faith, but as it were by works. They stumbled at the stone of stumbling;33 even as it is written, Look, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense: And he who believes on him will not be put to shame.

1 Digo a verdade em Cristo, não minto; minha consciência o confirma no Espírito Santo:2 tenho grande tristeza e constante angústia em meu coração.3 Pois eu até desejaria ser amaldiçoado e separado de Cristo por amor de meus irmãos, os de minha raça,4 o povo de Israel. Deles é a adoção de filhos; deles é a glória divina, as alianças, a concessão da lei, a adoração no templo e as promessas.5 Deles são os patriarcas, e a partir deles se traça a linhagem humana de Cristo, que é Deus acima de tudo, bendito para sempre! Amém.6 Não pensemos que a palavra de Deus falhou. Pois nem todos os descendentes de Israel são Israel.7 Nem por serem descendentes de Abraão passaram todos a ser filhos de Abraão. Pelo contrário: "Por meio de Isaque a sua descendência será considerada".8 Noutras palavras, não são os filhos naturais que são filhos de Deus, mas os filhos da promessa é que são considerados descendência de Abraão.9 Pois foi assim que a promessa foi feita: "no tempo devido virei novamente, e Sara terá um filho".10 E esse não foi o único caso; também os filhos de Rebeca tiveram um mesmo pai, nosso pai Isaque.11 Todavia, antes que os gêmeos nascessem ou fizessem qualquer coisa boa ou má — a fim de que o propósito de Deus conforme a eleição permanecesse,12 não por obras, mas por aquele que chama — foi dito a ela: "O mais velho servirá ao mais novo".13 Como está escrito: "Amei Jacó, mas rejeitei Esaú".14 E então, que diremos? Acaso Deus é injusto? De maneira nenhuma!15 Pois ele diz a Moisés: "Terei misericórdia de quem eu quiser ter misericórdia e terei compaixão de quem eu quiser ter compaixão".16 Portanto, isso não depende do desejo ou do esforço humano, mas da misericórdia de Deus.17 Pois a Escritura diz ao faraó: "Eu o levantei exatamente com este propósito: mostrar em você o meu poder, e para que o meu nome seja proclamado em toda a terra".18 Portanto, Deus tem misericórdia de quem ele quer, e endurece a quem ele quer.19 Mas algum de vocês me dirá: "Então, por que Deus ainda nos culpa? Pois, quem resiste à sua vontade? "20 Mas quem é você, ó homem, para questionar a Deus? "Acaso aquilo que é formado pode dizer ao que o formou: ‘Por que me fizeste assim? ’ "21 O oleiro não tem direito de fazer do mesmo barro um vaso para fins nobres e outro para uso desonroso?22 E se Deus, querendo mostrar a sua ira e tornar conhecido o seu poder, suportou com grande paciência os vasos de sua ira, preparados para destruição?23 Que dizer, se ele fez isto para tornar conhecidas as riquezas de sua glória aos vasos de sua misericórdia, que preparou de antemão para glória,24 ou seja, a nós, a quem também chamou, não apenas dentre os judeus, mas também dentre os gentios?25 Como ele diz em Oséias: "Chamarei ‘meu povo’ a quem não é meu povo; e chamarei ‘minha amada’ a quem não é minha amada",26 e: "Acontecerá que, no mesmo lugar em que se lhes declarou: ‘Vocês não são meu povo’, eles serão chamados ‘filhos do Deus vivo’. "27 Isaías exclama com relação a Israel: "Embora o número dos israelitas seja como a areia do mar, apenas o remanescente será salvo.28 Pois o Senhor executará na terra a sua sentença, rápida e definitivamente".29 Como anteriormente disse Isaías: "Se o Senhor dos Exércitos não nos tivesse deixado descendentes, já estaríamos como Sodoma, e semelhantes a Gomorra".30 Que diremos, então? Os gentios, que não buscavam justiça, a obtiveram, uma justiça que vem da fé;31 mas Israel, que buscava uma lei que trouxesse justiça, não a alcançou.32 Por que não? Porque não a buscava pela fé, mas como se fosse por obras. Eles tropeçaram na "pedra de tropeço".33 Como está escrito: "Eis que ponho em Sião uma pedra de tropeço e uma rocha que faz cair; e aquele que nela confia jamais será envergonhado".
