1 Entre os cativos que Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia, havia deportado para Babilônia foram os seguintes os habitantes da província que se puseram a caminho para voltar a Jerusalém e à Judéia, cada um à sua cidade.2 Voltaram com Zorobabel, Josué, Neemias, Saraías, Raelaías, Mardoqueu, Belsã, Mesfar, Beguai, Reum e Baana. Assim, foram excluídos do sacerdócio.63 O governador proibiu-os de comer das coisas sagradas, até que conseguissem encontrar um sacerdote {qualificado para consultar Deus} pelo Urim e o Tumim.64 O total do povo reunido era de 43.360 pessoas,65 sem contar seus escravos e escravas, em número de 7.337. Tinham consigo também 200 cantores e cantoras.66 Possuíam 736 cavalos, 245 jumentos,67 435 camelos, e 6.720 jumentas.68 Vários chefes de família, chegando ao templo do Senhor, fizeram ofertas voluntárias para a casa de Deus, a fim de que a mesma fosse restaurada.69 Contribuíram para os tesouros da obra, cada um segundo suas posses, com 61.000 dáricos de ouro, 5.000 de prata e 100 vestes sacerdotais.70 Os sacerdotes, os levitas, as pessoas do povo, os cantores, os porteiros e os natineus estabeleceram-se em suas respectivas cidades. Assim todos os israelitas habitaram cada um em sua localidade.

who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai, the Gileadite, and was called after their name.62 These sought their register [among] those that were reckoned by genealogy, but they were not found; therefore, they were, as polluted, put from the priesthood.63 And the Tirshatha said unto them that they should not eat of the most holy things until there stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim.64 The whole congregation united as one man was forty-two thousand three hundred [and] seventy,65 besides their servants and their maids, of whom [there were] seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven; and [there were] among them two hundred men and women who were singers.66 Their horses [were] seven hundred and thirty-six; their mules, two hundred and forty-five;67 their camels, four hundred and thirty-five; [their] asses, six thousand seven hundred and twenty.68 And [some] of the heads of the fathers, when they came to the house of the LORD which [was] at Jerusalem, offered freely for the house of God to set it up in his place.69 They gave after their ability unto the treasure of the work sixty-one thousand drams of gold and five thousand pounds of silver and one hundred priests' garments.70 So the priests and the Levites and [those] of the people and the singers and the porters and the Nethinims dwelt in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.:
