1 Vós, ricos, chorai e gemei por causa das desgraças que sobre vós virão.2 Vossas riquezas apodreceram e vossas roupas foram comidas pela traça.3 Vosso ouro e vossa prata enferrujaram-se e a sua ferrugem dará testemunho contra vós e devorará vossas carnes como fogo. Entesourastes nos últimos dias!4 Eis que o salário, que defraudastes aos trabalhadores que ceifavam os vossos campos, clama, e seus gritos de ceifadores chegaram aos ouvidos do Senhor dos exércitos.5 Tendes vivido em delícias e em dissoluções sobre a terra, e saciastes os vossos corações para o dia da matança!6 Condenastes e matastes o justo, e ele não vos resistiu.7 Tende, pois, paciência, meus irmãos, até a vinda do Senhor. Vede o lavrador: ele aguarda o precioso fruto da terra e tem paciência até receber a chuva do outono e a da primavera.8 Tende também vós paciência e fortalecei os vossos corações, porque a vinda do Senhor está próxima.9 Não vos queixeis uns dos outros, para que não sejais julgados. Eis que o juiz está à porta.10 Tomai, irmãos, por modelo de paciência e de coragem os profetas, que falaram em nome do Senhor.11 Vós sabeis que felicitamos os que suportam os sofrimentos de Jó. Vós conheceis o fim em que o Senhor o colocou, porque o Senhor é misericordioso e compassivo.12 Antes de mais nada, meus irmãos, abstende-vos de jurar. Não jureis nem pelo céu nem pela terra, nem empregueis qualquer outra fórmula de juramento. Que vosso sim, seja sim; que vosso não, seja não. Assim não caireis ao golpe do julgamento.13 Alguém entre vós está triste? Reze! Está alegre? Cante.14 Está alguém enfermo? Chame os sacerdotes da Igreja, e estes façam oração sobre ele, ungindo-o com óleo em nome do Senhor.15 A oração da fé salvará o enfermo e o Senhor o restabelecerá. Se ele cometeu pecados, ser-lhe-ão perdoados.16 Confessai os vossos pecados uns aos outros, e orai uns pelos outros para serdes curados. A oração do justo tem grande eficácia.17 Elias era um homem pobre como nós e orou com fervor para que não chovesse sobre a terra, e por três anos e seis meses não choveu.18 Orou de novo, e o céu deu chuva, e a terra deu o seu fruto.19 Meus irmãos, se alguém fizer voltar ao bom caminho algum de vós que se afastou para longe da verdade,20 saiba: aquele que fizer um pecador retroceder do seu erro, salvará sua alma da morte e fará desaparecer uma multidão de pecados.

1 Come now, Oh [ye] rich, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon [you].2 Your riches are rotten, and your garments are motheaten.3 Your gold and silver is corrupted with rust; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you and shall completely eat your flesh, as fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped your fields (which you have kept back by fraud) cries out; and the cries of those who have reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of the hosts.5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth and been wanton; ye have refreshed your hearts, as in the day of slaughter [of sacrifices].6 Ye have condemned [and] murdered the just, [and] he does not resist you.7 Be patient, therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently until it receives the early and latter rain.8 Be ye also patient and confirm your hearts, for the coming of the Lord draws near.9 Complain not one against another, brethren, that ye not be condemned: behold, the judge stands before the door.10 Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.11 Behold, we count blessed those who endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job and have seen the end of the Lord, that the Lord is very merciful, and full of compassion.12 But above all things, my brethren, do not swear by heaven or by the earth or by any other oath, but let your yes be yes and [your] no, no; lest ye fall into condemnation.13 Is anyone among you afflicted? let them pray. Is anyone happy? let them sing.14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray for him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;15 and the prayer of faith shall cause the one who is sick to be saved, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he shall be forgiven them.16 Confess [your] faults one to another and pray one for another that ye may be whole. The effectual prayer of the righteous [is] very powerful.17 Elijah was a man subject to passions like unto ours, and he asked in prayer that it might not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months.18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.19 Brethren, if any of you have erred from the truth, and someone should convert him;20 let [that one] know, that whosoever causes the sinner to convert from the error of his way shall save a soul from death and shall cover a multitude of sins.:
