1 A palavra do Senhor foi dirigida a Jonas, filho de Amitai, nestes termos:2 Levanta-te, vai a Nínive, a grande cidade, e profere contra ela os teus oráculos, porque sua iniqüidade chegou até a minha presença.3 Jonas pôs-se a caminho, mas na direção de Társis, para fugir do Senhor. Desceu a Jope, onde encontrou um navio que partia para Társis; pagou a passagem e embarcou nele para ir com os demais passageiros para Társis, longe da face do Senhor.4 O Senhor, porém, fez vir sobre o mar um vento impetuoso e levantou no mar uma tempestade tão grande que a embarcação ameaçava espedaçar-se.5 Aterrorizados, os marinheiros puseram-se a invocar cada qual o seu deus, e atiraram no mar a carga do navio para aliviarem-no. Entretanto, Jonas tinha descido ao porão do navio e, deitando-se ali, dormia profundamente.6 Veio o capitão e o despertou: Dorminhoco! Que estás fazendo aqui? Levanta-te e invoca o teu Deus, para ver se ele se lembra talvez de nós e nos livre da morte.7 Em seguida disseram os marinheiros entre si: Vinde e tiremos à sorte para sabermos quem é a causa deste mal. Lançaram a sorte e esta caiu sobre Jonas.8 E perguntaram-lhe: Tu, por quem nos acontecem estes males, dize-nos qual é a tua profissão? De onde vens? A que país e a que raça pertences?9 Sou hebreu, respondeu ele. Adoro o Senhor, Deus dos céus, que criou o mar e todos os continentes.10 Ficaram então aqueles homens possuídos de grande temor, e disseram-lhe: Por que fizeste isto? Pois tinham compreendido, pela própria declaração de Jonas, que este fugia para escapar à ordem do Senhor.11 E disseram-lhe: Que te havemos de fazer para que o mar se acalme em torno de nós? Porque o mar tornava-se cada vez mais ameaçador.12 Tomai-me, disse Jonas, e lançai-me às águas, e o mar se acalmará. Reconheço que sou eu a causa desta terrível tempestade que vos sobreveio.13 Os homens remavam para ver se conseguiam ganhar a costa, mas em vão, porque o mar se embravecia cada vez mais contra eles.14 Então invocaram o Senhor: Senhor, disseram eles, não nos façais perecer por causa da vida deste homem, nem nos torneis responsáveis pela vida deste homem que não nos fez mal algum. Vós, ó Senhor, fizestes como foi do vosso agrado.15 E, pegando em Jonas, lançaram-no às ondas, e a fúria do mar se acalmou.16 Tomada de profundo sentimento de temor para com o Senhor, a tripulação ofereceu-lhe um sacrifício, acompanhado de votos.17 O Senhor fez que ali se encontrasse um grande peixe para engolir Jonas, e este esteve três dias e três noites no ventre do peixe.

1 The word of the Lord also came unto Jonah the son of ‘Amitthai, saying,2 Arise, Go unto Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim against her; for their wickedness is come up before me.3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tharshish from the presence of the Lord; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tharshish, and paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tharshish, from the presence of the Lord.4 But the Lord excited a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea; and it was thought that the ship would be broken in pieces.5 And the mariners were afraid, and called every man unto his god; and they cast forth the articles which were in the ship into the sea, to be lightened of them. But Jonah was gone down into the hold of the ship, and lay down, and was fast asleep.6 So the ship–master came near unto him, and said unto him, Why dost thou sleep? arise, call upon thy God: perhaps it be that God will think of us, that we may not be lost.7 And they said one to the other, Come, and let us cast lots; that we may know for whose cause this evil hath happened unto us. And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, thou for whose cause this evil hath happened unto us, What is thy business? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?9 And he said unto them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who hath made the sea and the dry land.10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid and they said unto him, What is this thou hast done? for the men knew that he was flying from the presence of the Lord; because he had told them.11 And they said unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may become calm around us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea: so shall the sea be calm around you; for I know well that because of me is this great tempest upon you.13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring the ship back to the land; but they could not; for the sea grew more and more tempestuous around them.14 And they called unto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, let us not be lost, we pray thee, for the life of this man, and lay not upon us the guilt of innocent blood; for thou art the Lord, as it pleaseth thee so dost thou do.15 And they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from its raging.16 And the men feared the Lord very greatly; and they offered a sacrifice unto the Lord, and made vows.17 (2:1) And the Lord made ready a large fish to swallow up Jonah: and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
