1 Ouvi o que diz o Senhor: Vamos, advoga tua causa diante das montanhas, ouçam as colinas a tua voz!2 Ouvi, montanhas, o processo do Senhor, e vós, fundamentos perenes da terra. Porque o Senhor entrou em juízo com seu povo, ele vai pleitear com Israel:3 Povo meu, que te fiz, ou em que te contristei? Responde-me.4 Fiz-te sair do Egito, livrei-te da escravidão, e mandei diante de ti Moisés, Aarão e Maria.5 Povo meu, lembra-te dos desígnios de Balac, rei de Moab, e a resposta que lhe deu Balaão, filho de Beor; lembra-te {da etapa} entre Setim e Gálgala, para reconheceres os benefícios do Senhor.6 Com que me apresentarei diante do Senhor, e me prostrarei diante do Deus soberano? Irei à sua presença com holocaustos e novilhos de um ano?7 Agradar-se-á, porventura, o Senhor com milhares de carneiros, ou com milhões de torrentes de óleo? Sacrificar-lhe-ei pela minha maldade o meu primogênito, o fruto de minhas entranhas por meus próprios pecados?8 Já te foi dito, ó homem, o que convém, o que o Senhor reclama de ti: que pratiques a justiça, que ames a bondade, e que andes com humildade diante do teu Deus.9 A voz do Senhor eleva-se contra a cidade - é sabedoria temer o vosso nome. Ouve, tribo: ouve, assembléia da cidade.10 Haverá ainda na casa do ímpio tesouros mal adquiridos e um efá diminuído e maldito?11 Pode-se ser inocente com balanças falsas e com um saco cheio de pesos enganosos?12 Os ricos da cidade são homens violentos, os seus habitantes proferem mentiras, e em sua boca a língua só serve para enganar.13 Por isso vou começar a ferir-te por minha vez, a devastar-te por causa de teus pecados.14 O que comeres não te saciará, haverá fome em tua casa; porás os teus bens em lugar seguro, mas não os salvarás, e o que tiveres salvo, eu o entregarei à espada...15 Semearás e não colherás, espremerás a oliva mas não terás óleo com que te ungir; pisarás o mosto, mas não terás vinho para beber.16 Observam-se as leis de Amri, seguem-se os exemplos da casa de Acab; procede como eles, para que eu te reduza à desolação, e teus habitantes às vaias e assobios; suporta os insultos de meu povo.

1 Do but hear now what the Lord saith, Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.2 Hear ye, O mountains, the controversy of the Lord, and ye strong foundations of the earth! for the Lord hath a controversy with his people, and with Israel will he plead.3 O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherewith have I wearied thee? testify against me.4 Although I had brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of bond–men; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.5 O my people, do but remember what Balak the king of Moab resolved, and what Bil’am the son of Be’or answered him, from Shittim unto Gilgal, in order that ye may know the gracious benefits of the Lord.6 Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, bow myself before the God on high? shall I come before him with burnt–offerings, with calves of a year old!7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with myriads of streams of oil? shall I give my first–born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?8 He hath told thee, O man, what is good; and what the Lord doth require of thee: nothing but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with thy God.9 The voice of the Lord calleth unto the city,––and the man of wisdom shall see thy name:––hear ye the rod of punishment, and who hath ordained it.10 Are there yet in the house of the wicked man the treasures of wickedness, and the scant accursed measure?11 Can I be pure with wicked balances, and with a bag full of deceptive weights?12 For her rich men are full of violence, and her inhabitants have spoken falsehood, and their tongue is deceit itself in their mouth.13 Therefore have I also smitten thee with sore wounds, making thee desolate because of thy sins.14 Thou wilt indeed eat, but not be satisfied; and what thou hast eaten shall bend thee down; and thou wilt overtake the enemy, but thou shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword.15 Thou wilt indeed sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou wilt indeed tread out olives, but thou shalt not anoint thyself with oil; and the juice of the grapes, but thou shalt not drink wine.16 For there are observed the statutes of ‘Omri, and all the works of the house of Achab, and ye walk in their counsels: in order that I should give thee up unto desolation, and thy inhabitants to derision; and ye shall bear the reproach of my people.
