Logo que foi restaurada a muralha, colocados os batentes das portas, e que os porteiros, cantores e levitas foram encarregados da vigilância, 
confiei a defesa da cidade a Hanani, meu irmão, e a Ananias, comandante da cidadela, porque era um homem sério e muito piedoso. 
Ordenei-lhes que não abrissem as portas de Jerusalém enquanto não viesse o calor do sol; à tarde, enquanto os guardas estivessem ainda em seus postos, colocaríamos as trancas e fecharíamos as portas; e durante a noite estabeleceríamos guardas recrutados entre os habitantes de Jerusalém; cada um devia montar guarda em seu posto diante de sua própria casa. 
A cidade era grande e espaçosa, mas não tinha muitos habitantes, e as moradias não estavam ainda todas reconstruídas. 
Meu Deus inspirou-me então que reunisse as pessoas importantes, os magistrados e o povo, e fizesse o recenseamento. Descobri um registro genealógico dos que tinham voltado em primeiro lugar, no qual estava escrito o que segue: 
Entre os exilados que Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia, tinha levado cativos, estes são os habitantes da província que se puseram a caminho para retornar a Jerusalém e à Judéia, cada um à sua localidade. 
Voltaram sob o comando de Zorobabel, Josué, Neemias, Azarias, Raamias, Naamani, Mardoqueu, Belsã, Mesfarat, Beguai, Naum, Baana. Este é o recenseamento dos israelitas:

Total dos natineus e dos filhos dos servos de Salomão: 392. 
Eis aqueles que, partindo de Tel-Mela, de Tel-Harsa, de Querub-Adon e de Imer, não conseguiram provar sua origem israelita, nem tornar conhecidas sua família e descendência: 
filhos de Dalaías, filhos de Tobias, filhos de Necoda, 642; 
e entre os sacerdotes: filhos de Hobaia, filhos de Acos, filhos de Berzelai, o qual, tendo desposado uma das filhas de Berzelai, o galaadita, foi chamado pelo seu nome. 
Procuraram estabelecer sua genealogia, mas não o conseguiram descobrir. Assim, foram excluídos do sacerdócio. 
O governador proibiu-lhes comer das coisas sagradas, até que se pudesse encontrar um sacerdote qualificado para consultar Deus pelo Urim e Tumim. 
Toda a assembléia perfazia um total de 42.360 pessoas, 
sem contar seus servos e servas, que eram em número de 7.337. Havia com eles 245 cantores e cantoras. 
Tinham 736 cavalos, 245 burros, 
435 camelos e 6.720 jumentos. 
Alguns chefes de família fizeram donativos para os trabalhos. O governador doou ao tesouro mil dáricos de ouro, cinqüenta taças e quinhentas e trinta túnicas sacerdotais. 
Muitos chefes de família doaram ao tesouro vinte mil dáricos de ouro e duas mil e duzentas minas de prata. 
Enfim, o resto do povo doou vinte mil dáricos de ouro, duas mil minas de prata e sessenta e sete túnicas sacerdotais. 
Foi assim que os sacerdotes e levitas, os cantores, os porteiros, as pessoas do povo, os natineus e todos os israelitas estabeleceram-se em suas respectivas cidades. 

After the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers, the musicians and the Levites were appointed. 
I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of integrity and feared God more than most people do. 
I said to them, "The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot. While the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them shut the doors and bar them. Also appoint residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some near their own houses." 
Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt. 
So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. This is what I found written there: 
These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken captive (they returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town,

The following came up from the towns of Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Kerub, Addon and Immer, but they could not show that their families were descended from Israel: 
the descendants of Delaiah, Tobiah and Nekoda 642 
And from among the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah, Hakkoz and Barzillai (a man who had married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by that name). 
These searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean. 
The governor, therefore, ordered them not to eat any of the most sacred food until there should be a priest ministering with the Urim and Thummim. 
The whole company numbered 42,360, 
besides their 7,337 male and female slaves; and they also had 245 male and female singers. 
There were 736 horses, 245 mules, [^1] 
435 camels and 6,720 donkeys. 
Some of the heads of the families contributed to the work. The governor gave to the treasury 1,000 darics "of gold, 50 bowls and 530 garments for priests. 
Some of the heads of the families gave to the treasury for the work 20,000 darics "of gold and 2,200 minas "of silver. 
The total given by the rest of the people was 20,000 darics of gold, 2,000 minas "of silver and 67 garments for priests. 
The priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the musicians and the temple servants, along with certain of the people and the rest of the Israelites, settled in their own towns. When the seventh month came and the Israelites had settled in their towns,
