1 And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel distributed for inheritance to them.2 By lot was their inheritance, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half-tribe.3 For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and a half-tribe on the other side of Jordan: but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.4 For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no part to the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle, and for their substance.5 As the LORD commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided the land.6 Then the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said to him, Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said to Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea.7 Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to explore the land; and I brought him word again as it was in my heart.8 Nevertheless, my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my God.9 And Moses swore on that day, saying, Surely the land on which thy feet have trodden shall be thy inheritance, and thy children's for ever; because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God.10 And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spoke this word to Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day eighty five years old.11 As yet I am as strong this day, as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.12 Now therefore give me this mountain, of which the LORD spoke in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fortified: if the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance.14 Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite to this day; because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel.15 And the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.

1 Foram estas as terras que os israelitas receberam por herança em Canaã, e que o sacerdote Eleazar, Josué, filho de Num, e os chefes dos clãs das tribos dos israelitas repartiram entre eles.2 A divisão da herança foi decidida por sorteio entre as nove tribos e meia, como o Senhor tinha ordenado por meio de Moisés,3 pois Moisés já tinha dado herança às duas tribos e meia a leste do Jordão. Mas aos levitas não dera herança entre os demais.4 Os filhos de José formaram as duas tribos de Manassés e Efraim. Os levitas não receberam porção alguma da terra; receberam apenas cidades onde viver, com pastagens para os seus rebanhos.5 Os israelitas dividiram a terra conforme o Senhor tinha ordenado a Moisés.6 Os homens de Judá vieram a Josué em Gilgal, e Calebe, filho do quenezeu Jefoné, lhe disse: "Você sabe o que o Senhor disse a Moisés, homem de Deus, em Cades-Barnéia, sobre mim e sobre você.7 Eu tinha quarenta anos quando Moisés, servo do Senhor, enviou-me de Cades-Barnéia para espionar a terra. Eu lhe dei um relatório digno de confiança,8 mas os meus irmãos israelitas que foram comigo fizeram o povo desanimar-se de medo. Eu, porém, fui inteiramente fiel ao Senhor, ao meu Deus.9 Por isso naquele dia Moisés me jurou: ‘Certamente a terra em que você pisou será uma herança perpétua para você e para os seus descendentes, porquanto você foi inteiramente fiel ao Senhor, ao meu Deus’.10 "Pois bem, o Senhor manteve-me vivo, como prometeu. E foi há quarenta e cinco anos que ele disse isso a Moisés, quando Israel caminhava pelo deserto. Por isso aqui estou hoje, com oitenta e cinco anos de idade!11 Ainda estou tão forte como no dia em que Moisés me enviou; tenho agora tanto vigor para ir à guerra como naquela época.12 Dê-me, pois, a região montanhosa que naquela ocasião o Senhor me prometeu. Na época, você ficou sabendo que os enaquins lá viviam com suas cidades grandes e fortificadas; mas, se o Senhor estiver comigo, eu os expulsarei de lá, como ele prometeu".13 Então Josué abençoou Calebe, filho de Jefoné, e lhe deu Hebrom por herança.14 Por isso, até hoje, Hebrom pertence aos descendentes de Calebe, filho do quenezeu Jefoné, pois ele foi inteiramente fiel ao Senhor, ao Deus de Israel.15 Hebrom era chamada Quiriate-Arba, em homenagem a Arba, o maior dos enaquins. E a terra teve descanso da guerra.
