Romans 10

1 Brothers, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God is for Israel, that they may be saved. 2 For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they didn’t subject themselves to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the fulfillment*10:4 or, completion, or end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

5 For Moses writes about the righteousness of the law, "The one who does them will live by them."✝10:5 Leviticus 18:5 6 But the righteousness which is of faith says this, "Don’t say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’✝10:6 Deuteronomy 30:12 (that is, to bring Christ down); 7 or, ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’✝10:7 Deuteronomy 30:13 (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.)" 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart;"✝10:8 Deuteronomy 30:14 that is, the word of faith which we preach: 9 that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes in him will not be disappointed."✝10:11 Isaiah 28:16

12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich to all who call on him. 13 For, "Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved."✝10:13 Joel 2:32 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in him whom they have not heard? How will they hear without a preacher? 15 And how will they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:

"How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Good News of peace,

who bring glad tidings of good things!"✝10:15 Isaiah 52:7

16 But they didn’t all listen to the glad news. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our report?"✝10:16 Isaiah 53:1 17 So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. 18 But I say, didn’t they hear? Yes, most certainly,

"Their sound went out into all the earth,

their words to the ends of the world."✝10:18 Psalms 19:4

19 But I ask, didn’t Israel know? First Moses says,

"I will provoke you to jealousy with that which is no nation.

I will make you angry with a nation void of understanding."✝10:19 Deuteronomy 32:21

20 Isaiah is very bold and says,

"I was found by those who didn’t seek me.

I was revealed to those who didn’t ask for me."✝10:20 Isaiah 65:1

21 But about Israel he says, "All day long I stretched out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people."✝10:21 Isaiah 65:2

La justice de la foi comparée avec celle de la Loi.

1 Mes frères, quant à la bonne affection de mon coeur, et à la prière que je fais à Dieu pour Israël, c’est qu’ils soient sauvés. 2 Car je leur rends témoignage qu’ils ont du zèle pour Dieu, mais sans connaissance. 3 Parce que ne connaissant point la justice de Dieu, et cherchant d’établir leur propre justice, ils ne se sont point soumis à la justice de Dieu. 4 Car Christ est la fin de la Loi, en justice à tout croyant. 5 Or Moïse décrit ainsi la justice qui est par la Loi, savoir, que l’homme qui fera ces choses, vivra par elles. 6 Mais la justice qui est par la foi, s’exprime ainsi : ne dis point en ton coeur : qui montera au Ciel ? cela est ramener Christ d’en haut. 7 Ou : qui descendra dans l’abîme ? cela est ramener Christ des morts. 8 Mais que dit-elle ? La parole est près de toi en ta bouche, et en ton coeur. Or c’est là la parole de la foi, laquelle nous prêchons. 9 C’est pourquoi, si tu confesses le Seigneur Jésus de ta bouche, et que tu croies en ton coeur que Dieu l’a ressuscité des morts, tu seras sauvé. 10 Car de coeur on croit à justice, et de bouche on fait confession à salut. 11 Car l’Ecriture dit : quiconque croit en lui ne sera point confus. 12 Parce qu’il n’y a point de différence du Juif et du Grec ; car il y a un même Seigneur de tous, qui est riche envers tous ceux qui l’invoquent. 13 Car quiconque invoquera le nom du Seigneur sera sauvé. 14 Mais comment invoqueront-ils celui en qui ils n’ont point cru ? et comment croiront-ils en celui dont ils n’ont point entendu parler ? et comment en entendront-ils parler s’il n’y a quelqu’un qui leur prêche ? 15 Et comment prêchera-t-on sinon qu’il y en ait qui soient envoyés ? ainsi qu’il est écrit : ô que les pieds de ceux qui annoncent la paix sont beaux, les pieds, dis-je, de ceux qui annoncent de bonnes choses ! 16 Mais tous n’ont pas obéi à l’Evangile ; car Esaïe dit : Seigneur, qui est-ce qui a cru à notre prédication. 17 La foi donc est de l’ouïe ; et l’ouïe par la parole de Dieu. 18 Mais je demande : ne l’ont-ils point ouï ? au contraire, leur voix est allée par toute la terre, et leur parole jusques aux bouts du monde. 19 Mais je demande : Israël ne l’a-t-il point connu ? Moïse le premier dit : je vous exciterai à la jalousie par celui qui n’est point peuple ; je vous exciterai à la colère par une nation destituée d’intelligence. 20 Et Esaïe s’enhardit tout à fait, et dit : j’ai été trouvé de ceux qui ne me cherchaient point, et je me suis clairement manifesté à ceux qui ne s’enquéraient point de moi. 21 Mais quant à Israël, il dit : j’ai tout le jour étendu mes mains vers un peuple rebelle et contredisant.
