1 On that day, King Ahasuerus gave the house of Haman, the Jews’ enemy, to Esther the queen. Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was to her. 2 The king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai. Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

3 Esther spoke yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet and begged him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his plan that he had planned against the Jews. 4 Then the king held out to Esther the golden scepter. So Esther arose, and stood before the king. 5 She said, "If it pleases the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and the thing seems right to the king, and I am pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the king’s provinces. 6 For how can I endure to see the evil that would come to my people? How can I endure to see the destruction of my relatives?"

7 Then King Ahasuerus said to Esther the queen and to Mordecai the Jew, "See, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and they have hanged him on the gallows because he laid his hand on the Jews. 8 Write also to the Jews as it pleases you, in the king’s name, and seal it with the king’s ring; for the writing which is written in the king’s name, and sealed with the king’s ring, may not be reversed by any man."

9 Then the king’s scribes were called at that time, in the third month, which is the month Sivan, on the twenty-third day of the month; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded to the Jews, and to the local governors, and the governors and princes of the provinces which are from India to Ethiopia, one hundred twenty-seven provinces, to every province according to its writing, and to every people in their language, and to the Jews in their writing, and in their language. 10 He wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus, and sealed it with the king’s ring, and sent letters by courier on horseback, riding on royal horses that were bred from swift steeds. 11 In those letters, the king granted the Jews who were in every city to gather themselves together and to defend their lives—to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish all the power of the people and province that would assault them, their little ones and women, and to plunder their possessions, 12 on one day in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar. 13 A copy of the letter, that the decree should be given out in every province, was published to all the peoples, that the Jews should be ready for that day to avenge themselves on their enemies. 14 So the couriers who rode on royal horses went out, hastened and pressed on by the king’s commandment. The decree was given out in the citadel of Susa.

15 Mordecai went out of the presence of the king in royal clothing of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a robe of fine linen and purple; and the city of Susa shouted and was glad. 16 The Jews had light, gladness, joy, and honor. 17 In every province and in every city, wherever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had gladness, joy, a feast and a holiday. Many from among the peoples of the land became Jews, for the fear of the Jews had fallen on them.

1 Naquele mesmo dia, o rei Assuero deu à rainha Ester a casa de Hamã, inimigo dos judeus. E Mordecai foi trazido à presença do rei, porque Ester revelou que ele era seu parente. 2 O rei pegou o seu anel-sinete, que havia tomado de Hamã, e o deu a Mordecai. E Ester pôs Mordecai por administrador da casa de Hamã.

3 Ester voltou a falar com o rei. Ela se lançou aos pés dele e, com lágrimas, lhe implorou que revogasse a maldade de Hamã, o agagita, e a trama que ele havia arquitetado contra os judeus. 4 O rei estendeu o cetro de ouro para Ester. Então ela se levantou, pôs-se em pé diante do rei 5 e disse:

— Se for do agrado do rei, se eu achei favor diante dele, se isto parecer justo aos olhos do rei e se nisto lhe agrado, que se escreva uma ordem revogando os decretos concebidos por Hamã, filho de Hamedata, o agagita, os quais ele escreveu para aniquilar os judeus que se encontram em todas as províncias do rei. 6 Pois como poderei ver a desgraça que sobrevirá ao meu povo? E como poderei ver a destruição da minha parentela?

7 Então o rei Assuero disse à rainha Ester e ao judeu Mordecai:

— Eis que dei a Ester a casa de Hamã, que foi pendurado numa forca, porque tinha planejado matar os judeus. 8 E agora, em nome do rei, escrevam aos judeus o que bem lhes parecer e selem o documento com o anel-sinete do rei. Porque os decretos feitos em nome do rei e que foram selados com o seu anel-sinete não podem ser revogados.

9 Então foram chamados imediatamente os secretários do rei, aos vinte e três dias do mês de sivã, que é o terceiro mês. E, segundo tudo o que Mordecai ordenou, foi redigido um decreto para os judeus, para os sátrapas, para os governadores e para os oficiais das províncias que se estendem da Índia até a Etiópia, cento e vinte e sete províncias, a cada uma no seu próprio modo de escrever, e a cada povo na sua própria língua; e também aos judeus segundo o seu próprio modo de escrever e na sua própria língua. 10 Escreveu-se em nome do rei Assuero, e se selou com o anel-sinete do rei. As cartas foram enviadas por meio de mensageiros montados em ginetes criados nas estrebarias do rei. 11 Nas cartas, o rei permitia aos judeus de cada cidade que se reunissem e se organizassem para defender a sua vida, para destruir, matar e aniquilar de vez toda e qualquer força armada do povo da província que viesse contra eles, crianças e mulheres, e que se saqueassem os seus bens, 12 num mesmo dia, em todas as províncias do rei Assuero, no dia treze do décimo segundo mês, que é o mês de adar. 13 Uma cópia da carta, que determinava a proclamação da lei em todas as províncias, foi enviada a todos os povos, para que os judeus se preparassem para aquele dia, para se vingarem dos seus inimigos. 14 Os mensageiros, montados em ginetes que se usavam no serviço do rei, partiram imediatamente, impelidos pela ordem do rei. E a lei foi publicada na cidadela de Susã.

15 Então Mordecai saiu da presença do rei com trajes reais em azul-celeste e branco, com uma grande coroa de ouro e um manto de linho fino e púrpura. E a cidade de Susã exultou e se alegrou. 16 Para os judeus houve felicidade, alegria, júbilo e honra. 17 Também em cada província e em cada cidade aonde chegava a palavra do rei e a sua ordem, havia entre os judeus alegria e júbilo, banquetes e festas. E muitos que eram dos povos da terra se tornaram judeus, porque o temor dos judeus tinha caído sobre eles.
