1 Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, "None of us will give his daughter to Benjamin as a wife." 2 The people came to Bethel and sat there until evening before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept severely. 3 They said, "Yahweh, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that there should be one tribe lacking in Israel today?"
4 On the next day, the people rose early and built an altar there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. 5 The children of Israel said, "Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who didn’t come up in the assembly to Yahweh?" For they had made a great oath concerning him who didn’t come up to Yahweh to Mizpah, saying, "He shall surely be put to death." 6 The children of Israel grieved for Benjamin their brother, and said, "There is one tribe cut off from Israel today. 7 How shall we provide wives for those who remain, since we have sworn by Yahweh that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?" 8 They said, "What one is there of the tribes of Israel who didn’t come up to Yahweh to Mizpah?" Behold, no one came from Jabesh Gilead to the camp to the assembly. 9 For when the people were counted, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead there. 10 The congregation sent twelve thousand of the most valiant men there, and commanded them, saying, "Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones. 11 This is the thing that you shall do: you shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman who has lain with a man." 12 They found among the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead four hundred young virgins who had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
13 The whole congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin who were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them. 14 Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh Gilead. There still weren’t enough for them. 15 The people grieved for Benjamin, because Yahweh had made a breach in the tribes of Israel. 16 Then the elders of the congregation said, "How shall we provide wives for those who remain, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?" 17 They said, "There must be an inheritance for those who are escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe not be blotted out from Israel. 18 However, we may not give them wives of our daughters, for the children of Israel had sworn, saying, ‘Cursed is he who gives a wife to Benjamin.’" 19 They said, "Behold, there is a feast of Yahweh from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah." 20 They commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards, 21 and see, and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards, and each man catch his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. 22 It shall be, when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, that we will say to them, ‘Grant them graciously to us, because we didn’t take for each man his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them; otherwise you would now be guilty.’"
23 The children of Benjamin did so, and took wives for themselves according to their number, of those who danced, whom they carried off. They went and returned to their inheritance, built the cities, and lived in them. 24 The children of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they each went out from there to his own inheritance. 25 In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did that which was right in his own eyes.
1 Und alle Israeliten hatten zu Mizpa geschworen und gesagt: Niemand von uns soll seine Tochter einem Benjaminiten zum Weibe geben!
2 Und das Volk kam gen Bethel und verblieb daselbst bis zum Abend vor Gott; und sie erhoben ihre Stimme und weinten sehr
3 und sprachen: O HERR, Gott Israels, warum ist das in Israel geschehen, daß heute ein Stamm von Israel fehlt?
4 Am andern Morgen aber machte sich das Volk früh auf; und sie bauten daselbst einen Altar und opferten Brandopfer und Dankopfer.
5 Und die Kinder Israel sprachen: Wer von allen Stämmen Israels ist nicht in die Gemeinde zum HERRN heraufgekommen? Denn der große Schwur war ausgesprochen worden: Wer nicht zum HERRN gen Mizpa heraufkommt, der soll gewiß sterben!
6 Und es reute die Kinder Israel um ihren Bruder Benjamin, und sie sprachen: Heute ist ein Stamm von Israel abgehauen worden!
7 Was wollen wir tun, daß die Übriggebliebenen Frauen bekommen? Denn wir haben bei dem HERRN geschworen, daß wir ihnen keine von unsern Töchtern zu Frauen geben wollen!
8 Darum fragten sie: Wer ist wohl von den Stämmen Israels nicht zum HERRN gen Mizpa heraufgekommen? Und siehe, da war niemand von Jabes in Gilead zu der Gemeinde in das Lager gekommen.
9 Denn als das Volk gezählt ward, siehe, da war keiner der Bürger von Jabes in Gilead da!
10 Da sandte die Gemeinde zwölftausend von den tapfersten Männern dorthin und gebot ihnen und sprach: Geht hin und schlagt mit der Schärfe des Schwertes die Bürger von Jabes in Gilead, samt den Weibern und den Kindern!
11 Das aber ist der Befehl, den ihr ausführen sollt: Alles, was männlich ist, und alle Weiber, denen schon ein Mann beigewohnt hat, sollt ihr töten!
12 Und sie fanden unter den Bürgern von Jabes in Gilead vierhundert Töchter, die noch Jungfrauen waren und denen kein Mann beigewohnt hatte; die brachten sie ins Lager zu Silo, das im Lande Kanaan liegt.
13 Da sandte die ganze Gemeinde hin und ließ mit den Kindern Benjamin, die auf dem Felsen Rimmon waren, reden und ihnen Frieden anbieten.
14 Also kehrten die Kinder Benjamin zu jener Zeit wieder zurück, und man gab ihnen die Frauen, welche man von den Frauen zu Jabes in Gilead am Leben gelassen hatte; doch reichten diese nicht für sie aus.
15 Es reute aber das Volk um Benjamin, daß der HERR in den Stämmen Israels einen Riß gemacht hatte.
16 Und die Ältesten der Gemeinde sprachen: Was wollen wir tun, daß auch die Übriggebliebenen Frauen bekommen? Denn die Frauen sind aus Benjamin vertilgt.
17 Und sie sprachen: Benjamin muß gerettet werden, und es soll kein Stamm aus Israel vertilgt werden!
18 Nun können wir ihnen aber unsere Töchter nicht zu Frauen geben; denn die Kinder Israel haben geschworen und gesagt: Verflucht sei, wer den Benjaminiten ein Weib gibt!
19 Darum sprachen sie: Siehe, es ist alljährlich ein Fest des HERRN zu Silo, welches nördlich von Bethel liegt, östlich der Straße, die von Bethel nach Sichem hinaufführt und südlich von Lebona.
20 Und sie geboten den Kindern Benjamin und sprachen: Geht hin und lauert in den Weinbergen!
21 Wenn ihr dann sehet, daß die Töchter von Silo mit Reigen zum Tanze herausgehen, so kommt aus den Weinbergen hervor und nehmt euch ein jeder ein Weib von den Töchtern Silos und geht in das Land Benjamin!
22 Wenn aber ihre Väter oder ihre Brüder kommen, um mit uns zu rechten, so wollen wir zu ihnen sagen: Schenket sie uns! Denn nicht jeder hat ein Weib gewonnen im Kriege; auch habt ihr sie ihnen nicht gegeben, sonst wäret ihr heute schuldig!
23 Da taten die Kinder Benjamin also, daß sie sich Frauen nahmen nach ihrer Zahl von den Reigentänzerinnen, die sie raubten, und sie gingen davon und kehrten wieder zu ihrem Erbteil zurück und bauten Städte und wohnten darin.
24 Auch die Kinder Israel machten sich zu jener Zeit von dannen, ein jeder zu seinem Stamm und zu seinem Geschlecht, und begaben sich von dort aus ein jeder zu seinem Erbteil.
25 Zu jener Zeit war kein König in Israel; jedermann tat, was ihn recht dünkte. w
