1 The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, with all his army, all the kingdoms of the earth that were under his dominion, and all the peoples, were fighting against Jerusalem and against all its cities, saying: 2 "Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Go, and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Yahweh says, "Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon and he will burn it with fire. 3 You won’t escape out of his hand, but will surely be taken and delivered into his hand. Your eyes will see the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he will speak with you mouth to mouth. You will go to Babylon."’
4 "Yet hear Yahweh’s word, O Zedekiah king of Judah. Yahweh says concerning you, ‘You won’t die by the sword. 5 You will die in peace; and with the burnings of your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so they will make a burning for you. They will lament you, saying, "Ah Lord!" for I have spoken the word,’ says Yahweh."
6 Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem, 7 when the king of Babylon’s army was fighting against Jerusalem and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish and against Azekah; for these alone remained of the cities of Judah as fortified cities.
8 The word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, after king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people who were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty to them, 9 that every man should let his male servant, and every man his female servant, who is a Hebrew or a Hebrewess, go free, that no one should make bondservants of them, of a Jew his brother. 10 All the princes and all the people obeyed who had entered into the covenant, that everyone should let his male servant and everyone his female servant go free, that no one should make bondservants of them any more. They obeyed and let them go, 11 but afterwards they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids whom they had let go free to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.
12 Therefore Yahweh’s word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, 13 "Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: ‘I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying: 14 At the end of seven years, every man of you shall release his brother who is a Hebrew, who has been sold to you, and has served you six years. You shall let him go free from you. But your fathers didn’t listen to me, and didn’t incline their ear. 15 You had now turned, and had done that which is right in my eyes, in every man proclaiming liberty to his neighbor. You had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name; 16 but you turned and profaned my name, and every man caused his servant and every man his handmaid, whom you had let go free at their pleasure, to return. You brought them into subjection, to be to you for servants and for handmaids.’"
17 Therefore Yahweh says: "You have not listened to me, to proclaim liberty, every man to his brother, and every man to his neighbor. Behold, I proclaim to you a liberty," says Yahweh, "to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine. I will make you be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth. 18 I will give the men who have transgressed my covenant, who have not performed the words of the covenant which they made before me when they cut the calf in two and passed between its parts: 19 the princes of Judah, the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, the priests, and all the people of the land, who passed between the parts of the calf. 20 I will even give them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life. Their dead bodies will be food for the birds of the sky and for the animals of the earth.
21 "I will give Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes into the hands of their enemies, into the hands of those who seek their life and into the hands of the king of Babylon’s army, who has gone away from you. 22 Behold, I will command," says Yahweh, "and cause them to return to this city. They will fight against it, take it, and burn it with fire. I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant."
1 Nầy là lời từ nơi Đức Giê-hô-va phán cho Giê-rê-mi, khi Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa, vua Ba-by-lôn, cùng cả đạo binh người, mọi nước trong thế gian phục về người, và mọi dân, đương đánh thành Giê-ru-sa-lem và các thành khác thuộc về nó.
2 Giê-hô-va, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, phán như vầy: Hãy đi nói cùng Sê-đê-kia, vua Giu-đa, rằng: Đức Giê-hô-va có phán: Nầy, ta sẽ phó thành nầy vào tay vua Ba-by-lôn, người sẽ lấy lửa đốt đi.
3 Chính ngươi sẽ chẳng thoát khỏi tay người; mà chắc sẽ bị bắt, phó vào tay người. Mắt ngươi sẽ nhìn mắt của vua Ba-by-lôn; ngươi sẽ lấy miệng đối miệng mà nói cùng người, và ngươi sẽ đi qua nước Ba-by-lôn.
4 Dầu vậy, hỡi Sê-đê-kia, vua Giu-đa, hãy nghe lời Đức Giê-hô-va! Về ngươi, Đức Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Ngươi sẽ không chết bởi gươm đâu.
5 Ngươi sẽ bình an mà chết; người ta sẽ thiêu đốt cho ngươi, cũng như đã thiêu đốt cho tổ phụ ngươi, tức các vua trước ngươi; và sẽ thương khóc ngươi mà rằng: Oi Chúa ôi! Ay chính ta đã phán lời nầy, Đức Giê-hô-va phán vậy.
6 Tiên tri Giê-rê-mi bèn nói mọi lời ấy cùng Sê-đê-kia, vua Giu-đa, tại Giê-ru-sa-lem,
7 trong khi đạo binh của vua Ba-by-lôn đánh Giê-ru-sa-lem và các thành của Giu-đa còn sót lại, tức thành La-ki và thành A-xê-ca; vì trong các thành của Giu-đa chỉ hai thành bền vững đó còn lại.
8 Lời phán cho Giê-rê-mi bởi Đức Giê-hô-va, sau khi vua Sê-đê-kia đã lập giao ước với cả dân tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, đặng rao sự tự do cho dân đó,
9 hầu cho ai nấy thả kẻ nô hoặc tì, tức là người nam hoặc nữ Hê-bơ-rơ, cho được thong thả, chẳng ai được lại giữ người Giu-đa anh em mình làm tôi mọi nữa.
10 Hết thảy quan trưởng và cả dân đã dự vào giao ước ấy, mỗi người vâng lời phải thả đầy tớ trai mình, mỗi người phải thả đầy tớ gái mình được thong thả, không còn giữ lại làm tôi mọi nữa. Họ đều ưng theo và thả nô tì ra.
11 Nhưng rồi lại đổi ý; bắt những kẻ tôi đòi mà mình đã tha cho được thong thả, lại trở về phục sự mình làm tôi đòi.
12 Bấy giờ, có lời của Đức Giê-hô-va phán cho Giê-rê-mi rằng:
13 Giê-hô-va, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên phán như vầy: Ta đã lập giao ước với tổ phụ các ngươi trong ngày ta đem họ ra khỏi đất Ê-díp-tô, khỏi nhà nô lệ, và đã truyền cho rằng:
14 Khi đã hết bảy năm, trong các ngươi ai nấy phải buông tha người anh em, là người Hê-bơ-rơ, đã bán cho mình và đã phục dịch mình sáu năm rồi, ngươi hãy buông ra khỏi ngươi cho được thong thả. Nhưng tổ phụ các ngươi chẳng nghe ta, cũng không lắng tai mình.
15 Còn các ngươi, đã trở lại và làm điều đẹp mắt ta, mỗi người rao cho kẻ lân cận mình được thong thả; và đã lập giao ước trước mặt ta, tức trong nhà được xưng bằng danh ta.
16 Nhưng các ngươi đã trở ý, đã làm ô uế danh ta; các ngươi lại bắt tôi đòi mà mình đã buông tha cho tự do tùy ý chúng nó trở về, và ép phải lại làm tôi đòi mình như trước.
17 Vậy nên, Đức Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Các ngươi đã chẳng nghe ta, mỗi người rao cho anh em mình, kẻ lân cận mình được tự do. Đức Giê-hô-va phán: Nầy, ta rao sự tự do cho các ngươi, tức thả các ngươi ra cho gươm dao, ôn dịch, đói kém, khiến các ngươi bị ném lại giữa các nước thế gian.
18 Ta sẽ phó những người nam đã phạm giao ước ta, không làm theo những lời giao ước đã lập trước mặt ta, khi chúng nó mổ bò con làm đôi, và đi qua giữa hai phần nửa nó;
19 thật, ta sẽ phó các quan trưởng Giu-đa và các quan trưởng Giê-ru-sa-lem, hoạn quan, thầy tế lễ, và phàm những người trong đất đã đi qua giữa hai phần nửa bò con;
20 ta sẽ phó chúng nó trong tay kẻ thù, kẻ muốn hại mạng chúng nó; thây chúng nó sẽ làm đồ ăn cho loài chim trời và loài thú đất.
21 Ta cũng sẽ phó Sê-đê-kia vua Giu-đa, với các quan trưởng người, trong tay kẻ thù và kẻ muốn hại mạng, tức trong tay đạo binh vua Ba-by-lôn mới lìa khỏi các ngươi.
22 Đức Giê-hô-va phán: Nầy, ta sẽ truyền lịnh và khiến chúng nó trở về thành nầy; chúng nó sẽ đánh, sẽ chiếm lấy, và lấy lửa đốt đi. Ta sẽ làm cho các thành Giu-đa trở nên hoang vu, không có dân ở.
