1 Then Joshua called the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, 2 and said to them, "You have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have listened to my voice in all that I commanded you. 3 You have not left your brothers these many days to this day, but have performed the duty of the commandment of the LORD your God. 4 Now the LORD your God has given rest to your brothers, as he spoke to them. Therefore now return and go to your tents, to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you beyond the Jordan. 5 Only take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to keep his commandments, to hold fast to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul."

6 So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away; and they went to their tents. 7 Now to the one half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given inheritance in Bashan; but Joshua gave to the other half amongst their brothers beyond the Jordan westward. Moreover when Joshua sent them away to their tents, he blessed them, 8 and spoke to them, saying, "Return with much wealth to your tents, with very much livestock, with silver, with gold, with bronze, with iron, and with very much clothing. Divide the plunder of your enemies with your brothers."

9 The children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession, which they owned, according to the commandment of the LORD by Moses. 10 When they came to the region near the Jordan, that is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan, a great altar to look at. 11 The children of Israel heard this, "Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar along the border of the land of Canaan, in the region around the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the children of Israel." 12 When the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up against them to war. 13 The children of Israel sent to the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest. 14 With him were ten princes, one prince of a fathers’ house for each of the tribes of Israel; and they were each head of their fathers’ houses amongst the thousands of Israel. 15 They came to the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them, saying, 16 "The whole congregation of the LORD says, ‘What trespass is this that you have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away today from following the LORD, in that you have built yourselves an altar, to rebel today against the LORD? 17 Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day, although there came a plague on the congregation of the LORD, 18 that you must turn away today from following the LORD? It will be, since you rebel today against the LORD, that tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel. 19 However, if the land of your possession is unclean, then pass over to the land of the possession of the LORD, in which the LORD’s tabernacle dwells, and take possession amongst us; but don’t rebel against the LORD, nor rebel against us, in building an altar other than the LORD our God’s altar. 20 Didn’t Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? That man didn’t perish alone in his iniquity.’"

21 Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered, and spoke to the heads of the thousands of Israel, 22 "The Mighty One, God, the LORD, the Mighty One, God, the LORD, he knows; and Israel shall know: if it was in rebellion, or if in trespass against the LORD (don’t save us today), 23 that we have built us an altar to turn away from following the LORD; or if to offer burnt offering or meal offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace offerings, let the LORD himself require it.

24 "If we have not out of concern done this, and for a reason, saying, ‘In time to come your children might speak to our children, saying, "What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel? 25 For the LORD has made the Jordan a border between us and you, you children of Reuben and children of Gad. You have no portion in the LORD."’ So your children might make our children cease from fearing the LORD.

26 "Therefore we said, ‘Let’s now prepare to build ourselves an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice; 27 but it will be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may perform the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings;’ that your children may not tell our children in time to come, ‘You have no portion in the LORD.’

28 "Therefore we said, ‘It shall be, when they tell us or our generations this in time to come, that we shall say, "Behold the pattern of the LORD’s altar, which our fathers made, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you."’

29 "Far be it from us that we should rebel against the LORD, and turn away today from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offering, for meal offering, or for sacrifice, besides the LORD our God’s altar that is before his tabernacle!"

30 When Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation, even the heads of the thousands of Israel that were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them well. 31 Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the children of Reuben, to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, "Today we know that the LORD is amongst us, because you have not committed this trespass against the LORD. Now you have delivered the children of Israel out of the LORD’s hand." 32 Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, to the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again. 33 The thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and spoke no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land in which the children of Reuben and the children of Gad lived. 34 The children of Reuben and the children of Gad named the altar "A Witness Between Us that the LORD is God."

1 Então, Josué chamou os rubenitas, e os gaditas, e a meia tribo de Manassés 2 e disse-lhes: Tudo quanto Moisés, o servo do Senhor, vos ordenou guardastes, e à minha voz obedecestes em tudo quanto vos ordenei. 3 A vossos irmãos por tanto tempo até ao dia de hoje não desamparastes; antes, tivestes cuidado da guarda do mandamento do Senhor, vosso Deus. 4 E agora o Senhor, vosso Deus, deu repouso a vossos irmãos, como lhes tinha prometido: voltai-vos, pois, agora, e ide-vos a vossas tendas, à terra da vossa possessão, que Moisés, o servo do Senhor, vos deu dalém do Jordão. 5 Tão somente tende cuidado de guardar com diligência o mandamento e a lei que Moisés, o servo do Senhor, vos mandou: que ameis ao Senhor, vosso Deus, e andeis em todos os seus caminhos, e guardeis os seus mandamentos, e vos achegueis a ele, e o sirvais com todo o vosso coração e com toda a vossa alma. 6 Assim, Josué os abençoou e despediu-os; e foram para as suas tendas.

7 Porquanto Moisés dera herança, em Basã, à meia tribo de Manassés; porém à outra metade deu Josué entre seus irmãos, daquém do Jordão para o ocidente; e, enviando-os Josué também a suas tendas, os abençoou 8 e falou-lhes, dizendo: Voltais às vossas tendas com grandes riquezas, e com muitíssimo gado, com prata, e com ouro, e com metal, e com ferro, e com muitíssimas vestes; reparti com vossos irmãos o despojo dos vossos inimigos. 9 Assim, os filhos de Rúben, e os filhos de Gade, e a meia tribo de Manassés voltaram e partiram dos filhos de Israel, de Siló, que está na terra de Canaã, para irem à terra de Gileade, à terra da sua possessão, de que foram feitos possuidores, conforme o dito do Senhor, pelo ministério de Moisés.

10 E, vindo eles aos limites do Jordão, que estão na terra de Canaã, ali os filhos de Rúben, e os filhos de Gade, e a meia tribo de Manassés edificaram um altar junto ao Jordão, um altar de grande aparência. 11 E ouviram os filhos de Israel dizer: Eis que os filhos de Rúben, e os filhos de Gade, e a meia tribo de Manassés edificaram um altar na frente da terra de Canaã, nos limites do Jordão, da banda dos filhos de Israel. 12 Ouvindo isto os filhos de Israel, ajuntou-se toda a congregação dos filhos de Israel em Siló, para saírem contra eles em exército.

13 E enviaram os filhos de Israel aos filhos de Rúben, e aos filhos de Gade, e à meia tribo de Manassés, para a terra de Gileade, Fineias, filho de Eleazar, o sacerdote, 14 e dez príncipes com ele, de cada casa paterna um príncipe, de todas as tribos de Israel; e cada um era cabeça da casa de seus pais nos milhares de Israel. 15 E, vindo eles, aos filhos de Rúben, e aos filhos de Gade, e à meia tribo de Manassés, à terra de Gileade, falaram com eles, dizendo: 16 Assim diz toda a congregação do Senhor: Que transgressão é esta, com que transgredistes contra o Deus de Israel, deixando hoje de seguir ao Senhor, edificando-vos um altar, para vos rebelardes contra o Senhor? 17 Foi-nos pouco a iniquidade de Peor, de que ainda até ao dia de hoje não estamos purificados, ainda que houve castigo na congregação do Senhor, 18 para que, hoje, abandonais ao Senhor? Será que, rebelando-vos hoje contra o Senhor, amanhã se irará contra toda a congregação de Israel. 19 Se é, porém, que a terra da vossa possessão é imunda, passai-vos para a terra da possessão do Senhor, onde habita o tabernáculo do Senhor, e tomai possessão entre nós; mas não vos rebeleis contra o Senhor, nem tampouco vos rebeleis contra nós, edificando-vos um altar, afora o altar do Senhor, nosso Deus. 20 Não cometeu Acã, filho de Zerá, transgressão no tocante ao anátema? E não veio ira sobre toda a congregação de Israel? Assim que aquele homem não morreu só na sua iniquidade.

21 Então, responderam os filhos de Rúben, e os filhos de Gade, e a meia tribo de Manassés, e disseram aos cabeças dos milhares de Israel: 22 O Deus dos deuses, o Senhor, o Deus dos deuses, o Senhor, ele o sabe, e Israel mesmo o saberá; se foi em rebeldia ou por transgressão contra o Senhor, hoje não nos preserveis. 23 Se nós edificamos altar para nos tornar de após o Senhor, ou para sobre ele oferecer holocausto e oferta de manjares, ou sobre ele fazer oferta pacífica, o Senhor mesmo de nós o requeira. 24 E, se, antes, o fizemos, foi em receio disto: amanhã vossos filhos virão a falar a nossos filhos, dizendo: Que tendes vós com o Senhor, Deus de Israel? 25 Pois o Senhor pôs o Jordão por termo entre nós e vós, ó filhos de Rúben e filhos de Gade; não tendes parte no Senhor. E assim bem poderiam vossos filhos fazer desistir a nossos filhos de temer ao Senhor. 26 Pelo que dissemos: Façamos, agora, e nos edifiquemos um altar, não para holocausto, nem para sacrifício, 27 mas, para que entre nós e vós e entre as nossas gerações depois de nós, nos seja em testemunho, para podermos fazer o serviço do Senhor diante dele com os nossos holocaustos, e com os nossos sacrifícios, e com as nossas ofertas pacíficas, e para que vossos filhos não digam amanhã a nossos filhos: Não tendes parte no Senhor. 28 Pelo que dissemos: Quando for que, amanhã, assim nos digam a nós e às nossas gerações, então, diremos: Vede o modelo do altar do Senhor que fizeram nossos pais, não para holocausto, nem para sacrifício, porém para ser testemunho entre nós e vós. 29 Nunca tal nos aconteça, que nos rebelássemos contra o Senhor ou que hoje nós abandonássemos ao Senhor, edificando altar para holocausto, oferta de manjares ou sacrifício, fora do altar do Senhor, nosso Deus, que está perante o seu tabernáculo.

30 Ouvindo, pois, Fineias, o sacerdote, e os príncipes da congregação, e os cabeças dos milhares de Israel que com ele estavam as palavras que disseram os filhos de Rúben, e os filhos de Gade, e os filhos de Manassés, pareceu bem aos seus olhos. 31 E disse Fineias, filho de Eleazar, o sacerdote, aos filhos de Rúben, aos filhos de Gade, e aos filhos de Manassés: Hoje, sabemos que o Senhor está no meio de nós; porquanto não cometestes transgressão contra o Senhor; agora, livrastes os filhos de Israel da mão do Senhor.

32 E voltou Fineias, filho de Eleazar, o sacerdote, com os príncipes, dos filhos de Rúben e dos filhos de Gade, da terra de Gileade à terra de Canaã, aos filhos de Israel; e trouxeram-lhes a resposta. 33 E pareceu a resposta boa aos olhos dos filhos de Israel, e os filhos de Israel louvaram a Deus; e não falaram mais de subir contra eles em exército, para destruírem a terra em que habitavam os filhos de Rúben e os filhos de Gade. 34 E os filhos de Rúben e os filhos de Gade puseram no altar o nome Ede, para que seja testemunho entre nós que o Senhor é Deus.
