1 The king’s heart is in the LORD’s hand like the watercourses.

He turns it wherever he desires.

2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes,

but the LORD weighs the hearts.

3 To do righteousness and justice

is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

4 A high look and a proud heart,

the lamp of the wicked, is sin.

5 The plans of the diligent surely lead to profit;

and everyone who is hasty surely rushes to poverty.

6 Getting treasures by a lying tongue

is a fleeting vapor for those who seek death.

7 The violence of the wicked will drive them away,

because they refuse to do what is right.

8 The way of the guilty is devious,

but the conduct of the innocent is upright.

9 It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop

than to share a house with a contentious woman.

10 The soul of the wicked desires evil;

his neighbor finds no mercy in his eyes.

11 When the mocker is punished, the simple gains wisdom.

When the wise is instructed, he receives knowledge.

12 The Righteous One considers the house of the wicked,

and brings the wicked to ruin.

13 Whoever stops his ears at the cry of the poor,

he will also cry out, but shall not be heard.

14 A gift in secret pacifies anger,

and a bribe in the cloak, strong wrath.

15 It is joy to the righteous to do justice;

but it is a destruction to the workers of iniquity.

16 The man who wanders out of the way of understanding

shall rest in the assembly of the departed spirits.

17 He who loves pleasure will be a poor man.

He who loves wine and oil won’t be rich.

18 The wicked is a ransom for the righteous,

the treacherous for the upright.

19 It is better to dwell in a desert land,

than with a contentious and fretful woman.

20 There is precious treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise;

but a foolish man swallows it up.

21 He who follows after righteousness and kindness

finds life, righteousness, and honor.

22 A wise man scales the city of the mighty,

and brings down the strength of its confidence.

23 Whoever guards his mouth and his tongue

keeps his soul from troubles.

24 The proud and arrogant man—"Scoffer" is his name—

he works in the arrogance of pride.

25 The desire of the sluggard kills him,

for his hands refuse to labor.

26 There are those who covet greedily all day long;

but the righteous give and don’t withhold.

27 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination—

how much more, when he brings it with a wicked mind!

28 A false witness will perish.

A man who listens speaks to eternity.

29 A wicked man hardens his face;

but as for the upright, he establishes his ways.

30 There is no wisdom nor understanding

nor counsel against the LORD.

31 The horse is prepared for the day of battle;

but victory is with the LORD.

1 Assim como a água pode ser canalizada para onde for preciso, assim o Senhor pode dirigir segundo a sua vontade os pensamentos de quem governa.2 O que uma pessoa faz parece-lhe bem feito, mas só Deus sabe avaliar correctamente as intenções.3 Deus tem ainda mais alegria quando se pratica a justiça e se julga com rectidão, do que quando lhe fazemos ofertas.4 O orgulho, a altivez para com os outros, o luxo ostensivo, tudo isso é sempre pecado para com Deus!5 O trabalho reflectido de uma pessoa diligente leva certamente à prosperidade. Mas a impaciência e a precipitação vêm a dar unicamente na pobreza.6 Dinheiro junto por meio da mentira torna-se uma prosperidade ilusória. É como buscar a sua própria ruína.7 Visto que os pecadores se recusam a praticar a justiça, virão a ser destruídos pela sua própria violência.8 O homem revela-se pelos seus actos: os do mau são tortuosos; mas aquele que é honesto tem uma conduta recta.9 Vale mais morar num canto dum sótão do que com uma mulher conflituosa numa bela casa.10 A alma do pecador está cheia de maldade, até mesmo para com o seu amigo.11 Uma pessoa inteligente aprende quando é instruída; mas os tolos só aprendem quando vêem os incrédulos castigados.12 Os que seguem Deus, consideram atentamente o que acontece às famílias dos pecadores, quando são arrastados para o mal.13 Os que fecham os ouvidos aos apelos dos pobres também virão a ser esquecidos quando chegar a hora de gritarem por auxílio.14 Um presente dado discretamente é capaz de abater a zanga, de acalmar uma violenta indignação.15 Para uma pessoa honesta, é uma alegria quando se faz justiça; mas para os que praticam a iniquidade isso é um espanto.16 Quem se afasta do caminho do bom senso acabará por ir descansar na companhia dos mortos.17 Os que amam os prazeres caem na pobreza; os escravos das bebidas alcoólicas e do luxo nunca virão a saber o que é a verdadeira prosperidade.18 Os pecadores acabarão perdendo; os fiéis virão a ser salvos.19 Vale mais viver num deserto do que com uma mulher rixosa e irascível.20 Na casa duma pessoa de bom senso há bem-estar e poupanças; mas o insensato dá cabo de tudo quanto ganha.21 Quem segue a justiça e a lealdade achará na vida honra e também justiça.22 A sabedoria do sábio dá-lhe força para tomar até uma cidade fortificada e anular a força dos que a defendem.23 Aquele que sabe guardar a sua boca e controlar o que diz, protege a sua alma de muitos aborrecimentos.24 Os soberbos são em geral pessoas trocistas e presumidas. É no fundo uma questão de orgulho.25 Os desejos do preguiçoso acabam por matá-lo porque as suas mãos se recusam ao trabalho e passa todo o tempo a querer coisas. Mas o justo tem uma vida diferente: ele gosta de dar com generosidade.27 Deus recusa sacrifícios dos pecadores, e muito mais se esses sacrifícios são feitos com intenções desonestas.28 Uma falsa testemunha será castigada. Aquele que soube observar os factos, falará com segurança e sem que alguém o conteste.29 Os pecadores são em geral pessoas teimosas; mas os rectos sabem considerar correctamente as situações.30 Não há sabedoria, nem inteligência, nem reflexão, por mais profundas que sejam, que possam defrontar o Senhor.31 Os homens fazem tudo para obterem a vitória numa batalha; mas o certo é que isso só o Senhor o pode conceder!
