1 E aproximaram-se os dias da morte de Davi; e deu ele ordem a Salomão, seu filho, dizendo:2 Eu vou pelo caminho de toda a terra; esforça-te, pois, e sê homem.3 E guarda a ordenança do Senhor teu Deus, para andares nos seus caminhos, e para guardares os seus estatutos, e os seus mandamentos, e os seus juízos, e os seus testemunhos, como está escrito na lei de Moisés; para que prosperes em tudo quanto fizeres, e para onde quer que fores.4 Para que o Senhor confirme a palavra, que falou de mim, dizendo: Se teus filhos guardarem o seu caminho, para andarem perante a minha face fielmente, com todo o seu coração e com toda a sua alma, nunca, disse, te faltará sucessor ao trono de Israel.5 E também tu sabes o que me fez Joabe, filho de Zeruia, e o que fez aos dois capitães do exército de Israel, a Abner filho de Ner, e a Amasa, filho de Jeter, os quais matou, e em paz derramou o sangue de guerra, e pôs o sangue de guerra no cinto que tinha nos lombos, e nos sapatos que trazia nos pés.6 Faze, pois, segundo a tua sabedoria, e não permitas que seus cabelos brancos desçam à sepultura em paz.7 Porém com os filhos de Barzilai, o gileadita, usarás de beneficência, e estarão entre os que comem à tua mesa, porque assim se chegaram eles a mim, quando eu fugia por causa de teu irmão Absalão.8 E eis que também contigo está Simei, filho de Gera, filho de Benjamim, de Baurim, que me maldisse com maldição atroz, no dia em que ia a Maanaim; porém ele saiu a encontrar-se comigo junto ao Jordão, e eu pelo Senhor lhe jurei, dizendo que o não mataria à espada.9 Mas agora não o tenhas por inculpável, pois és homem sábio, e bem saberás o que lhe hás de fazer para que faças com que seus cabelos brancos desçam à sepultura com sangue.10 E Davi dormiu com seus pais, e foi sepultado na cidade de Davi.11 E foram os dias que Davi reinou sobre Israel quarenta anos: sete anos reinou em Hebrom, e em Jerusalém reinou trinta e três anos.12 E Salomão se assentou no trono de Davi, seu pai, e o seu reino se fortificou sobremaneira.13 Então veio Adonias, filho de Hagite, a Bate-Seba, mãe de Salomão; e disse ela: De paz é a tua vinda? E ele disse: É de paz.14 Então disse ele: Uma palavra tenho que dizer-te. E ela disse: Fala.15 Disse, pois, ele: Bem sabes que o reino era meu, e todo o Israel tinha posto a vista em mim para que eu viesse a reinar, contudo o reino foi transferido e veio a ser de meu irmão, porque foi feito seu pelo Senhor.16 Assim que agora uma só petição te faço; não ma rejeites. E ela lhe disse: Fala.17 E ele disse: Peço-te que fales ao rei Salomão (porque ele não te rejeitará) que me dê por mulher a Abisague, a sunamita.18 E disse Bate-Seba: Bem, eu falarei por ti ao rei.19 Assim foi Bate-Seba ao rei Salomão, a falar-lhe por Adonias; e o rei se levantou a encontrar-se com ela, e se inclinou diante dela; então se assentou no seu trono, e fez pôr uma cadeira para a sua mãe, e ela se assentou à sua direita.20 Então disse ela: Só uma pequena petição te faço; não ma rejeites. E o rei lhe disse: Pede, minha mãe, porque não ta negarei.21 E ela disse: Dê-se Abisague, a sunamita, a Adonias, teu irmão, por mulher.22 Então respondeu o rei Salomão, e disse a sua mãe: E por que pedes a Abisague, a sunamita, para Adonias? Pede também para ele o reino (porque é meu irmão maior), para ele, digo, e também para Abiatar, sacerdote, e para Joabe, filho de Zeruia.23 E jurou o rei Salomão pelo Senhor, dizendo: Assim Deus me faça, e outro tanto, se não falou Adonias esta palavra contra a sua vida.24 Agora, pois, vive o Senhor, que me confirmou, e me fez assentar no trono de Davi, meu pai, e que me tem feito casa, como tinha falado, que hoje morrerá Adonias.25 E enviou o rei Salomão pela mão de Benaia, filho de Joiada, o qual arremeteu contra ele de modo que morreu.26 E a Abiatar, o sacerdote, disse o rei: Vai para Anatote, para os teus campos, porque és homem digno de morte; porém hoje não te matarei, porquanto levaste a arca do Senhor Deus diante de Davi, meu pai, e porquanto foste aflito em tudo quanto meu pai foi aflito.27 Lançou, pois, Salomão fora a Abiatar, para que não fosse sacerdote do Senhor, para cumprir a palavra do Senhor, que tinha falado sobre a casa de Eli em Siló.28 E chegou a notícia até Joabe (porque Joabe tinha se desviado seguindo a Adonias, ainda que não tinha se desviado seguindo a Absalão), e Joabe fugiu para o tabernáculo do Senhor, e apegou-se às pontas do altar.29 E disseram ao rei Salomão que Joabe tinha fugido para o tabernáculo do Senhor; e eis que está junto ao altar; então Salomão enviou Benaia, filho de Joiada, dizendo: Vai, arremete sobre ele.30 E foi Benaia ao tabernáculo do Senhor, e lhe disse: Assim diz o rei: Sai daí. E disse ele: Não, porém aqui morrerei. E Benaia tornou com a resposta ao rei, dizendo: Assim falou Joabe, e assim me respondeu.31 E disse-lhe o rei: Faze como ele disse, e arremete contra ele, e sepulta-o, para que tires de mim e da casa de meu pai o sangue que Joabe sem causa derramou.32 Assim o Senhor fará recair o sangue dele sobre a sua cabeça, porque deu sobre dois homens mais justos e melhores do que ele, e os matou à espada, sem que meu pai Davi o soubesse, a saber: a Abner, filho de Ner, capitão do exército de Israel, e a Amasa, filho de Jeter, capitão do exército de Judá.33 Assim recairá o sangue destes sobre a cabeça de Joabe e sobre a cabeça da sua descendência para sempre; mas a Davi, e à sua descendência, e à sua casa, e ao seu trono, dará o Senhor paz para todo o sempre.34 E subiu Benaia, filho de Joiada, e arremeteu contra ele, e o matou; e foi sepultado em sua casa, no deserto.35 E o rei pôs a Benaia, filho de Joiada, em seu lugar sobre o exército, e a Zadoque, o sacerdote, pôs o rei em lugar de Abiatar.36 Depois mandou o rei, e chamou a Simei, e disse-lhe: Edifica-te uma casa em Jerusalém, e habita aí, e daí não saias, nem para uma nem para outra parte.37 Porque há de ser que no dia em que saíres e passares o ribeiro de Cedrom, de certo que sem dúvida morrerás; o teu sangue será sobre a tua cabeça.38 E Simei disse ao rei: Boa é essa palavra; como tem falado o rei meu senhor, assim fará o teu servo. E Simei habitou em Jerusalém muitos dias.39 Sucedeu, porém, que, ao cabo de três anos, dois servos de Simei fugiram para Aquis, filho de Maaca, rei de Gate; e deram parte a Simei, dizendo: Eis que teus servos estão em Gate.40 Então Simei se levantou, e albardou o seu jumento, e foi a Gate, ter com Aquis, em busca de seus servos; assim foi Simei, e trouxe os seus servos de Gate.41 E disseram a Salomão como Simei fora de Jerusalém a Gate, e já tinha voltado.42 Então o rei mandou chamar a Simei, e disse-lhe: Não te conjurei eu pelo Senhor, e protestei contra ti, dizendo: No dia em que saíres para uma ou outra parte, sabe decerto que, sem dúvida, morrerás? E tu me disseste: Boa é essa palavra que ouvi.43 Por que, pois, não guardaste o juramento do Senhor, nem a ordem que te dei?44 Disse mais o rei a Simei: Bem sabes tu toda a maldade que o teu coração reconhece, que fizeste a Davi, meu pai; pelo que o Senhor fez recair a tua maldade sobre a tua cabeça.45 Mas o rei Salomão será abençoado, e o trono de Davi será confirmado perante o Senhor para sempre.46 E o rei mandou a Benaia, filho de Joiada, o qual saiu, e arremeteu contra ele, de modo que morreu; assim foi confirmado o reino na mão de Salomão.

1 And when the days of David drew near that he should die, he charged Solomon his son, saying,2 I am going the way of all the earth; but be thou strong, and become a man;3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, his commandments, and his ordinances, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses; in order that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself;4 In order that the Lord may fulfill his word which he hath spoken concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall never fail thee, said he, a man on the throne of Israel.5 And thou also knowest well what Joab the son of Zeruyah hath done to me, what he did to the two captains of the armies of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto ‘Amassa the son of Yether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and on his shoes that were on his feet.6 Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoary head go down in peace to the grave.7 But unto the sons of Barzillai the Gil’adite show thou kindness, and let them be of those that eat at thy table; for so they came near to me when I fled from before Abshalom thy brother.8 And, behold, thou hast with thee Shim’i the son of Gera, the Benjamite of Bachurim, who cursed me with a grievous curse on the day when I went to Machanayim; but who came down to meet me at the Jordan, and I swore to him by the Lord, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.9 But now leave him not unpunished; for thou art a wise man; know then what thou oughtest to do unto him, and bring thou down his hoary head with blood to the grave.10 And David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.11 And the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years: in Hebron he reigned seven years, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years.12 Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly.13 And Adoniyah the son of Chaggith came to Bath–sheba’ the mother of Solomon: and she said, Is thy coming for peace? And he said, For peace.14 He said moreover, I have a word for thee. And she said, Speak.15 And he said, Thou well knowest that mine was the kingdom, and that on me all Israel had set their faces, that I should reign: nevertheless the kingdom was turned about, and became my brother’s; for from the Lord was it made his.16 And now there is one petition I am going to ask of thee, do not turn me away. And she said unto him, Speak.17 And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, for he will not turn thee away, that he may give me Abishag the Shunammite for wife.18 And Bath–sheba’ said, Well: I will speak for thee unto the king.19 Bath–sheba’ thereupon went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adoniyah; and the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and then sat down on his throne, and placed a chair for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.20 Then said she, There is one small petition I am going to ask of thee; do not turn me away. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother; for I will not turn thee away.21 And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adoniyah thy brother for wife.22 And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adoniyah? rather ask for him the kingdom; for he is my elder brother; ––even for him, and for Ebyathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruyah.23 Then swore king Solomon by the Lord, saying, May God do so to me, and may he thus continue, if Adoniyah have not spoken this word against his own life.24 And now, as the Lord liveth, who hath established me, and seated me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me a house, as he hath spoken, this very day shall Adoniyah be put to death.25 And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benayahu the son of Yehoyada’; and he fell upon him so that he died.26 And unto Ebyathar the priest said the king, Go to ‘Anathoth, unto thy own fields; for thou art a man worthy of death; but on this day will I not put thee to death; because thou hast borne the ark of the Lord Eternal before David my father, and because thou was afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted.27 So Solomon banished Ebyathar that he should not be priest unto the Lord, to fulfill the word of the Lord, which he had spoken concerning the house of ‘Eli in Shiloh.28 And the report came to Joab; for Joab had turned after Adoniyah, though he had not turned after Abshalom. And Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.29 And it was told to king Solomon that Joab had fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord; and that, behold, he was close by the altar. Then sent Solomon Benayahu the son of Yehoyada,’ saying, Go, fall upon him.30 And Benayahu came to the tabernacle of the Lord, and said unto him, Thus hath said the king, Come forth. And he said, No; but here will I die. And Benayahu brought the king word again, saying, Thus hath Joab spoken, and thus hath he answered me.31 Then said the king unto him, Do as he hath spoken, and fall upon him, and bury him; and remove thus the innocent blood, which Joab hath shed, from me, and from the house of my father.32 And may the Lord bring back his blood–guiltiness upon his own head, because he fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, while my father David knew it not, Abner the son of Ner, the captain of the army of Israel, and ‘Amassa the son of Yether, the captain of the army of Judah.33 And their blood shall return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever; but unto David, and unto his seed, and unto his house, and unto his throne, may there be peace for ever from the Lord.34 So Benayahu the son of Yehoyada’ went up, and fell upon him, and slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.35 And the king appointed Benayahu the son of Yehoyada’ in his place over the army; and Zadok the priest did the king appoint in the place of Ebyathar.36 And the king sent and called for Shim’i, and said unto him, Build thee a house in Jerusalem, and dwell there, and thou shalt not go forth from there hither or thither.37 And it shall be, that on the day thou goest out, and passest over the brook Kidron, thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon thy own head.38 And Shim’i said unto the king, It is well: as my Lord the king hath spoken, so will thy servant do. And Shim’i dwelt in Jerusalem many days.39 And it came to pass at the end of three years, that two servants of Shim’i ran away unto Achish the son of Ma’achah the king of Gath: and they told unto Shim’i, saying, Behold, thy servants are in Gath.40 And Shim’i arose, and saddled his ass, and went to Gath to Achish to seek his servants; and Shim’i went, and brought his servants from Gath.41 And it was told to Solomon that Shim’i had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and had returned.42 And the king sent and called for Shim’i, and said unto him, Did I not make thee swear by the Lord, and warned thee, saying, On that day thou goest out, and walkest abroad hither or thither, know for certain that thou shalt surely die? and thou saidst unto me, It is well, I have heard?43 Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the Lord, and the commandment with which I charged thee?44 The king said moreover to Shim’i, Thou well knowest all the wickedness of which thy heart is conscious, that thou hast done to David my father: and the Lord bringeth back thy wickedness upon thy own head;45 But king Solomon will be blessed, and the throne of David will be established before the Lord for ever.46 So the king commanded Benayahu the son of Yehoyada’, who went out, and fell upon him, so that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.
