1 Efraim se apascenta de vento, e segue o vento leste; todo o dia multiplica a mentira e a destruição; e fazem aliança com a Assíria, e o azeite se leva ao Egito.2 O Senhor também com Judá tem contenda, e castigará Jacó segundo os seus caminhos; segundo as suas obras o recompensará.3 No ventre pegou do calcanhar de seu irmão, e na sua força lutou com Deus.4 Lutou com o anjo, e prevaleceu; chorou, e lhe suplicou; em Betel o achou, e ali falou conosco,5 Sim, o Senhor, o Deus dos Exércitos; o Senhor é o seu memorial.6 Tu, pois, converte-te a teu Deus; guarda a benevolência e o juízo, e em teu Deus espera sempre.7 É um mercador; tem nas mãos uma balança enganosa; ama a opressão.8 E diz Efraim: Contudo me tenho enriquecido, e tenho adquirido para mim grandes bens; em todo o meu trabalho não acharão em mim iniquidade alguma que seja pecado.9 Mas eu sou o Senhor teu Deus desde a terra do Egito; eu ainda te farei habitar em tendas, como nos dias da festa solene.10 Falei aos profetas, e multipliquei a visão; e pelo ministério dos profetas propus símiles.11 Não é Gileade iniquidade? Pura vaidade são eles; em Gilgal sacrificam bois; os seus altares são como montões de pedras nos sulcos dos campos.12 Jacó fugiu para o campo da Síria, e Israel serviu por uma mulher, e por uma mulher guardou o gado.13 Mas o Senhor por meio de um profeta fez subir a Israel do Egito, e por um profeta foi ele guardado.14 Efraim mui amargosamente provocou a sua ira; portanto deixará ficar sobre ele o seu sangue, e o seu Senhor o recompensará pelo seu opróbrio.

1 (12:2) Ephraim feedeth on wind, and pursueth the east wind; the whole day he increaseth deceit and corruption; and a covenant do they make with Assyria, and oil is carried into Egypt.2 (12:3) But with Judah also hath the Lord to hold a controversy; and to punish Jacob according to his ways, according to his doings will he recompense him.3 (12:4) In the womb he took his brother by the heel, and in his strength he strove with an angel.4 (12:5) Yea, he strove with an angel, and prevailed; he wept, and made supplication unto him: in Beth–el he should find him, and there he will speak with us.5 (12:6) And the Lord God of hosts, the Eternal One is his memorial.6 (12:7) Therefore do thou return to thy God: keep goodness and justice, and wait on thy God continually.7 (12:8) But like a merchant, who hath the balances of deceit in his hand, loving to overreach,8 (12:9) Did Ephraim say, I am certainly become rich, I have acquired substance unto myself: it is all through my labors; they will find no iniquity in me, that could be sin.9 (12:10) And I am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt: I will yet make thee dwell in tents, as in the days of antiquity.10 (12:11) And I have spoken through the prophets, and I myself have multiplied visions, and by the means of the prophets have I spoken in similitudes.11 (12:12) If in Gil’ad there was misfortune, it is because there was naught but idolatry; in Gilgal they sacrificed bullocks to idols: their altars also are as stone–heaps on the furrows of the fields.12 (12:13) And Jacob fled into the fields of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept the flocks.13 (12:14) And by a prophet did the Lord bring Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he guarded.14 (12:15)Yet Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore will his Lord cast his blood–guiltiness upon him, and his reproach will he recompense unto him.
