1 Quando Israel era menino, eu o amei; e do Egito chamei a meu filho.2 Mas, como os chamavam, assim se iam da sua face; sacrificavam a baalins, e queimavam incenso às imagens de escultura.3 Todavia, eu ensinei a andar a Efraim; tomando-os pelos seus braços, mas não entenderam que eu os curava.4 Atraí-os com cordas humanas, com laços de amor, e fui para eles como os que tiram o jugo de sobre as suas queixadas, e lhes dei mantimento.5 Não voltará para a terra do Egito, mas a Assíria será seu rei; porque recusam converter-se.6 E cairá a espada sobre as suas cidades, e consumirá os seus ramos, e os devorará, por causa dos seus próprios conselhos.7 Porque o meu povo é inclinado a desviar-se de mim; ainda que chamam ao Altíssimo, nenhum deles o exalta.8 Como te deixaria, ó Efraim? Como te entregaria, ó Israel? Como te faria como Admá? Te poria como Zeboim? Está comovido em mim o meu coração, as minhas compaixões à uma se acendem.9 Não executarei o furor da minha ira; não voltarei para destruir a Efraim, porque eu sou Deus e não homem, o Santo no meio de ti; eu não entrarei na cidade.10 Andarão após o Senhor; ele rugirá como leão; rugindo, pois, ele, os filhos do ocidente tremerão.11 Tremendo virão como um passarinho, os do Egito, e como uma pomba, os da terra da Assíria, e os farei habitar em suas casas, diz o Senhor.12 Efraim me cercou com mentira, e a casa de Israel com engano; mas Judá ainda domina com Deus, e com os santos está fiel.

1 When Israel was yet young, then I loved him, and out of Egypt did I call my son.2 The prophets called them; but the more they went from them: unto the Be’alim would they sacrifice, and to the graven images would they burn incense.3 Yet I myself appointed a leader for Ephraim, who took them up in his arms; but they would not acknowledge that I healed them.4 With human cords I ever drew them forward, with leading–strings of love: and I was to them as those that lift off the yoke from their jaws, and I held out unto them food.5 He should not return unto the land of Egypt: yet now is the Assyrian his king; because they refused to repent.6 And the sword shall fall on his cities, and shall make an end of his boughs, and consume them, because of their evil counsels.7 For my people are only bent on backsliding from me; and though upward they call them, they altogether will not elevate themselves.8 How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I surrender thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I change thee as Zeboyim? turned is my heart within me, all my compassion is enkindled together.9 I will not execute the fierceness of my anger, I will not again destroy Ephraim; for God am I, and not man, the Holy One in the midst of thee, and I will not come with an enemy’s hatred.10 They shall follow after the Lord, when he will roar like a lion; for he will roar, and the children shall hasten together from the west;11 They shall hasten together as birds out of Egypt, and as doves out of the land of Assyria: and I will cause them to dwell in their houses, saith the Lord.12 (12:1) With lies hath Ephraim encompassed me about, and with deceit, the house of Israel; but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful to the Holy One.
