1 Thus said the LORD, Go and get a potter' earthen bottle, and take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of the priests;
2 And go forth to the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the east gate, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell you,
3 And say, Hear you the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem; Thus said the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring evil on this place, the which whoever hears, his ears shall tingle.
4 Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it to other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;
5 They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings to Baal, which I commanded not, nor spoke it, neither came it into my mind:
6 Therefore, behold, the days come, said the LORD, that this place shall no more be called Tophet, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of slaughter.
7 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of them that seek their lives: and their carcasses will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.
8 And I will make this city desolate, and an hissing; every one that passes thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof.
9 And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and narrow place, with which their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall straiten them.
10 Then shall you break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with you,
11 And shall say to them, Thus said the LORD of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter' vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury.
12 Thus will I do to this place, said the LORD, and to the inhabitants thereof, and even make this city as Tophet:
13 And the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, shall be defiled as the place of Tophet, because of all the houses on whose roofs they have burned incense to all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink offerings to other gods.
14 Then came Jeremiah from Tophet, where the LORD had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of the LORD' house; and said to all the people,
15 Thus said the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring on this city and on all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have hardened their necks, that they might not hear my words.
1 IL Signore ha detto così: Va’, insieme con alcuni degli anziani del popolo, e degli anziani de’ sacerdoti, e compera un boccale di vasellaio.
2 Ed esci alla valle del figliuolo di Hinnom, che è all’entrata della porta de’ vasellai; e quivi grida le parole che io ti dirò, e di’:
3 Ascoltate la parola del Signore, voi re di Giuda, ed abitanti di Gerusalemme: Così ha detto il Signor degli eserciti, l’Iddio d’Israele: Ecco, io fo venire sopra questo luogo un male, il quale chiunque udirà avrà gli orecchi intronati.
4 Perciocchè mi hanno lasciato, ed hanno profanato questo luogo, ed hanno in esso fatti profumi ad altri dii, i quali nè essi, nè i lor padri, nè i re di Giuda, non han conosciuti; ed hanno empiuto questo luogo di sangue d’innocenti.
5 Ed hanno edificati degli alti luoghi a Baal, per bruciar col fuoco i lor figliuoli in olocausto a Baal, il che io non comandai, e non ne parlai giammai, e non mi entrò giammai in cuore;
6 Perciò, ecco, i giorni vengono, dice il Signore, che questo luogo non sarà più chiamato Tofet, nè valle del figliuolo di Hinnom, ma valle di uccisione.
7 Ed io metterò al niente il consiglio di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, in questo luogo; e li farò cader per la spada dinanzi a’ lor nemici, e li darò in man di quelli che cercano l’anima loro; e darò i lor corpi morti per pasto agli uccelli del cielo, ed alle bestie della terra.
8 E metterò questa città in desolazione, ed in zufolo; chiunque passerà presso di essa stupirà, e zufolerà, per tutte le sue piaghe.
9 E farò che mangeranno la carne de’ lor figliuoli, e la carne delle lor figliuole; e ciascuno mangerà la carne del suo compagno, nell’assedio, e nella distretta, della quale i lor nemici, e quelli che cercano l’anima loro, li stringeranno
10 Poi spezza il boccale in presenza di quegli uomini, che saranno andati teco, e di’ loro:
11 Così ha detto il Signor degli eserciti: Così romperò questo popolo, e questa città, come si spezza un vasello di vasellaio, il quale non si può più risaldare; e saranno seppelliti in Tofet, finchè non vi sia più luogo da seppellire.
12 Così farò a questo luogo, dice il Signore, ed a’ suoi abitanti; e ciò, per render questa città simile a Tofet.
13 E le case di Gerusalemme, e le case dei re di Giuda, saranno immonde come il luogo di Tofet; tutte le case, sopra i cui tetti hanno fatti profumi a tutto l’esercito del cielo, e offerte da spandere ad altri dii.
14 Poi Geremia se ne venne di Tofet, dove il Signore l’avea mandato per profetizzare; e si fermò nel cortile della Casa del Signore, e disse a tutto il popolo:
15 Così ha detto il Signor degli eserciti, l’Iddio d’Israele: Ecco, io fo venire sopra questa città, e sopra tutte le terre d’essa, tutto il male che io ho pronunziato contro a lei; perciocchè hanno indurato il lor collo, per non ascoltar le mie parole
