1 Run you to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if you can find a man, if there be any that executes judgment, that seeks the truth; and I will pardon it.
2 And though they say, The LORD lives; surely they swear falsely.
3 O LORD, are not your eyes on the truth? you have stricken them, but they have not grieved; you have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.
4 Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God.
5 I will get me to the great men, and will speak to them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.
6 Why a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goes out there shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.
7 How shall I pardon you for this? your children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots'houses.
8 They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbor' wife.
9 Shall I not visit for these things? said the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
10 Go you up on her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD'.
11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, said the LORD.
12 They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come on us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:
13 And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done to them.
14 Why thus said the LORD God of hosts, Because you speak this word, behold, I will make my words in your mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.
15 See, I will bring a nation on you from far, O house of Israel, said the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language you know not, neither understand what they say.
16 Their quiver is as an open sepulcher, they are all mighty men.
17 And they shall eat up your harvest, and your bread, which your sons and your daughters should eat: they shall eat up your flocks and your herds: they shall eat up your vines and your fig trees: they shall impoverish your fenced cities, wherein you trusted, with the sword.
18 Nevertheless in those days, said the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.
19 And it shall come to pass, when you shall say, Why does the LORD our God all these things to us? then shall you answer them, Like as you have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall you serve strangers in a land that is not your'.
20 Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,
21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:
22 Fear you not me? said the LORD: will you not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?
23 But this people has a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.
24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that gives rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserves to us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withheld good things from you.
26 For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that sets snares; they set a trap, they catch men.
27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.
28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yes, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.
29 Shall I not visit for these things? said the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
30 A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land;
31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will you do in the end thereof?
1 Andate attorno per le strade di Gerusalemme, e riguardate ora, e riconoscete, e cercate per le sue piazze, se trovate un solo uomo; se vi è alcuno che operi dirittamente, che cerchi la lealtà; ed io le perdonerò.
2 E se pur dicono: Il Signor vive; certo giurano falsamente.
3 O Signore, non sono gli occhi tuoi volti verso la lealtà: tu li hai percossi, e non è lor doluto; tu li hai consumati, ed han ricusato di ricevere correzione; hanno indurata la faccia loro, più che un sasso; hanno rifiutato di convertirsi.
4 Or io diceva: Questi son solo i miseri; sono insensati; perciocchè non conoscono la via del Signore, la Legge dell’Iddio loro.
5 Io me ne andrò a grandi, e parlerò con loro; perciocchè essi conoscono la via del Signore, la Legge dell’Iddio loro; ma essi tutti quanti hanno spezzato il giogo, hanno rotti i legami.
6 Perciò il leone della selva li ha percossi, il lupo del vespro li ha deserti, il pardo sta in guato presso alle lor città; chiunque ne uscirà sarà lacerato; perciocchè i lor misfatti sono moltiplicati, le lor ribellioni si son rinforzate.
7 Come ti perdonerei io questo? i tuoi figliuoli mi hanno lasciato, ed han giurato per quelli che non sono dii; ed avendoli io satollati, han commesso adulterio; e si sono adunati a schiere in casa della meretrice.
8 Quando si levano la mattina, son come cavalli ben pasciuti: ciascun di loro ringhia dietro alla moglie del suo prossimo.
9 Non farei io punizione di queste cose? dice il Signore; e non vendicherebbesi l’anima mia d’una cotal gente?
10 Salite su le sue mura, e guastate, e non fate fine; togliete via i suoi ripari; perciocchè non son del Signore.
11 Conciossiachè la casa d’Israele, e la casa di Giuda, si sieno portate del tutto dislealmente inverso me, dice il Signore.
12 Han rinnegato il Signore, ed han detto: Egli non è: e male alcuno non ci verrà addosso; e non vedremo spada, nè fame;
13 e i profeti andranno al vento, e non vi è oracolo alcuno in loro; così sarà lor fatto.
14 Per tanto, così ha detto il Signore Iddio degli eserciti: Perciocchè voi avete proferita questa parola, ecco, io farò che le mie parole saranno nella tua bocca come un fuoco, e questo popolo sarà come legne, e quel fuoco lo divorerà.
15 O casa d’Israele, ecco, io fo venir sopra voi, dice il Signore, una gente di lontano; ella è una gente poderosa, una gente antica, una gente, della quale tu non saprai la lingua, e non intenderai quel che dirà.
16 Il suo turcasso sarà come un sepolcro aperto, essi tutti saranno uomini di valore.
17 Ed ella mangerà la tua ricolta, ed il tuo pane, che i tuoi figliuoli, e le tue figliuole doveano mangiare; mangerà le tue pecore, e i tuoi buoi; mangerà i frutti delle tue vigne, e de’ tuoi fichi; e con la spada ridurrà allo stremo le città forti, nelle quali tu ti confidi.
18 E pure anche in que’ giorni, dice il Signore, non farò fine con voi.
19 Ed avverrà che voi direte: Perchè ci ha il Signore Iddio nostro fatte tutte queste cose? Allora tu di’ loro: Siccome voi mi avete lasciato, e avete servito a dii stranieri nel vostro paese, così servirete a stranieri in paese non vostro
20 Annunziate questo nella casa di Giacobbe, e banditelo in Giuda, dicendo:
21 Ascoltate ora questo, o popolo stolto, e che non ha senno; che ha occhi, e non vede; orecchi, e non ode.
22 Non mi temerete voi? dice il Signore; non avrete voi spavento di me, che ho, per istatuto perpetuo, posta la rena per termine del mare, il quale egli non trapasserà; e benchè le sue onde si commuovano, non però verranno al disopra; e benchè romoreggino, non però lo trapasseranno?
23 Ma questo popolo ha un cuor ritroso e ribello; si sono stornati, e se ne sono iti;
24 e non han detto nel cuor loro: Deh! temiamo il Signore Iddio nostro, che dà la pioggia della prima e dell’ultima stagione, al suo tempo; che ci conserva le settimane ordinate per la mietitura
25 Le vostre iniquità hanno stornate queste cose, e i vostri peccati vi han divietato il bene.
26 Perciocchè fra il mio popolo si son trovati degli empi, che stanno a guato, a guisa che gli uccellatori se ne stanno cheti; e rizzano trappole da prendere uomini.
27 Come la gabbia è piena di uccelli, così le case loro son piene d’inganno; perciò, sono aggranditi, ed arricchiti.
28 Son divenuti grassi, e lisci; e pure ancora hanno passati di mali accidenti; non fanno ragione alcuna, non pure all’orfano, e pur prosperano; e non fanno diritto a’ poveri.
29 Non farei io punizione di queste cose? dice il Signore; non vendicherebbesi l’anima mia d’una cotal gente?
30 Cosa stupenda e brutta è avvenuta nella terra:
31 i profeti han profetizzato con menzogna; e i sacerdoti han signoreggiato, appoggiandosi sopra le mani di essi; e il mio popolo l’ha amato così. Ora, che farete voi alla fine?
