1 Palavra que do Senhor veio a Jeremias, quando Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia, e todo o seu exército, e todos os reinos da terra que estavam debaixo do seu poder, e todos os povos pelejavam contra Jerusalém e contra todas as suas cidades, dizendo: 2 Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: Vai, fala a Zedequias, rei de Judá, e dize-lhe: Assim diz o Senhor: Eis que eu entrego esta cidade nas mãos do rei da Babilônia, o qual a queimará. 3 Tu não lhe escaparás das mãos; pelo contrário, serás preso e entregue nas suas mãos; tu verás o rei da Babilônia face a face, e ele te falará boca a boca, e entrarás na Babilônia. 4 Todavia, ouve a palavra do Senhor, ó Zedequias, rei de Judá: Assim diz o Senhor a teu respeito: Não morrerás à espada. 5 Em paz morrerás, e te queimarão perfumes a ti, como se queimaram a teus pais, que, como reis, te precederam, e te prantearão, dizendo: Ah! Senhor! Pois eu é que disse a palavra, diz o Senhor.
6 Falou Jeremias, o profeta, a Zedequias, rei de Judá, todas estas palavras, em Jerusalém, 7 quando o exército do rei da Babilônia pelejava contra Jerusalém e contra todas as cidades que restavam de Judá, contra Laquis e contra Azeca; porque só estas ficaram das cidades fortificadas de Judá.
8 Palavra que do Senhor veio a Jeremias, depois que o rei Zedequias fez aliança com todo o povo de Jerusalém, para lhes apregoar a liberdade: 9 que cada um despedisse forro o seu servo e cada um, a sua serva, hebreu ou hebreia, de maneira que ninguém retivesse como escravos hebreus, seus irmãos. 10 Todos os príncipes e todo o povo que haviam entrado na aliança obedeceram, despedindo forro cada um o seu servo e cada um a sua serva, de maneira que já não os retiveram como escravos; obedeceram e os despediram. 11 Mas depois se arrependeram, e fizeram voltar os servos e as servas que haviam despedido forros, e os sujeitaram por servos e por servas.
12 Veio, pois, a palavra do Senhor a Jeremias, da parte do Senhor, dizendo: 13 Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: Eu fiz aliança com vossos pais, no dia em que os tirei da terra do Egito, da casa da servidão, dizendo: 14 Ao fim de sete anos, libertareis cada um a seu irmão hebreu, que te for vendido a ti e te houver servido seis anos, e despedi-lo-ás forro; mas vossos pais não me obedeceram, nem inclinaram os seus ouvidos a mim. 15 Não há muito, havíeis voltado a fazer o que é reto perante mim, apregoando liberdade cada um ao seu próximo; e tínheis feito perante mim aliança, na casa que se chama pelo meu nome; 16 mudastes, porém, e profanastes o meu nome, fazendo voltar cada um o seu servo e cada um, a sua serva, os quais, deixados à vontade, já tínheis despedido forros, e os sujeitastes, para que fossem vossos servos e servas. 17 Portanto, assim diz o Senhor: Vós não me obedecestes, para apregoardes a liberdade, cada um a seu irmão e cada um ao seu próximo; pois eis que eu vos apregoo a liberdade, diz o Senhor, para a espada, para a peste e para a fome; farei que sejais um espetáculo horrendo para todos os reinos da terra. 18 Farei aos homens que transgrediram a minha aliança e não cumpriram as palavras da aliança que fizeram perante mim como eles fizeram com o bezerro que dividiram em duas partes, passando eles pelo meio das duas porções; 19 os príncipes de Judá, os príncipes de Jerusalém, os oficiais, os sacerdotes e todo o povo da terra, os quais passaram por meio das porções do bezerro, 20 entregá-los-ei nas mãos de seus inimigos e nas mãos dos que procuram a sua morte, e os cadáveres deles servirão de pasto às aves dos céus e aos animais da terra. 21 A Zedequias, rei de Judá, e a seus príncipes, entregá-los-ei nas mãos de seus inimigos e nas mãos dos que procuram a sua morte, nas mãos do exército do rei da Babilônia, que já se retiraram de vós. 22 Eis que eu darei ordem, diz o Senhor, e os farei tornar a esta cidade, e pelejarão contra ela, tomá-la-ão e a queimarão; e as cidades de Judá porei em assolação, de sorte que ninguém habite nelas.
1 The word which came unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and all his army, and all the kingdoms of the earth that were under his dominion, and all the peoples, were fighting against Jerusalem, and against all the cities thereof, saying: 2 Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Go, and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire: 3 and thou shalt not escape out of his hand, but shalt surely be taken, and delivered into his hand; and thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak with thee mouth to mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon. 4 Yet hear the word of Jehovah, O Zedekiah king of Judah: thus saith Jehovah concerning thee, Thou shalt not die by the sword; 5 thou shalt die in peace; and with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings that were before thee, so shall they make a burning for thee; and they shall lament thee, saying, Ah Lord! for I have spoken the word, saith Jehovah.
6 Then Jeremiah the prophet spake all these words unto Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem, 7 when the king of Babylon’s army was fighting against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish and against Azekah; for these alone remained of the cities of Judah as fortified cities.
8 The word that came unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people that were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them; 9 that every man should let his man-servant, and every man his maid-servant, that is a Hebrew or a Hebrewess, go free; that none should make bondmen of them, to wit, of a Jew his brother. 10 And all the princes and all the people obeyed, that had entered into the covenant, that every one should let his man-servant, and every one his maid-servant, go free, that none should make bondmen of them any more; they obeyed, and let them go: 11 but afterwards they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.
12 Therefore the word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying, 13 Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying, 14 At the end of seven years ye shall let go every man his brother that is a Hebrew, that hath been sold unto thee, and hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear. 15 And ye were now turned, and had done that which is right in mine eyes, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbor; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name: 16 but ye turned and profaned my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom ye had let go free at their pleasure, to return; and ye brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.
17 Therefore thus saith Jehovah: Ye have not hearkened unto me, to proclaim liberty, every man to his brother, and every man to his neighbor: behold, I proclaim unto you a liberty, saith Jehovah, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth. 18 And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, that have not performed the words of the covenant which they made before me, when they cut the calf in twain and passed between the parts thereof; 19 the princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, that passed between the parts of the calf; 20 I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life; and their dead bodies shall be for food unto the birds of the heavens, and to the beasts of the earth. 21 And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, that are gone away from you. 22 Behold, I will command, saith Jehovah, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.
1 While Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army and all the kingdoms and peoples in the empire he ruled were fighting against Jerusalem and all its surrounding towns, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
2 "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Go to Zedekiah king of Judah and tell him, 'This is what the LORD says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it down.
3 You will not escape from his grasp but will surely be captured and given into his hands. You will see the king of Babylon with your own eyes, and he will speak with you face to face. And you will go to Babylon.
4 "'Yet hear the LORD's promise to you, Zedekiah king of Judah. This is what the LORD says concerning you: You will not die by the sword;
5 you will die peacefully. As people made a funeral fire in honor of your predecessors, the kings who ruled before you, so they will make a fire in your honor and lament, "Alas, master!" I myself make this promise, declares the LORD.'"
6 Then Jeremiah the prophet told all this to Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem,
7 while the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and the other cities of Judah that were still holding out —Lachish and Azekah. These were the only fortified cities left in Judah.
8 The word came to Jeremiah from the LORD after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem to proclaim freedom for the slaves.
9 Everyone was to free their Hebrew slaves, both male and female; no one was to hold a fellow Hebrew in bondage.
10 So all the officials and people who entered into this covenant agreed that they would free their male and female slaves and no longer hold them in bondage. They agreed, and set them free.
11 But afterward they changed their minds and took back the slaves they had freed and enslaved them again.
12 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
13 "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I made a covenant with your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. I said,
14 'Every seventh year each of you must free any fellow Hebrews who have sold themselves to you. After they have served you six years, you must let them go free.' "Your ancestors, however, did not listen to me or pay attention to me.
15 Recently you repented and did what is right in my sight: Each of you proclaimed freedom to your own people. You even made a covenant before me in the house that bears my Name.
16 But now you have turned around and profaned my name; each of you has taken back the male and female slaves you had set free to go where they wished. You have forced them to become your slaves again.
17 "Therefore this is what the LORD says: You have not obeyed me; you have not proclaimed freedom to your own people. So I now proclaim 'freedom' for you, declares the LORD —'freedom' to fall by the sword, plague and famine. I will make you abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth.
18 Those who have violated my covenant and have not fulfilled the terms of the covenant they made before me, I will treat like the calf they cut in two and then walked between its pieces.
19 The leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the court officials, the priests and all the people of the land who walked between the pieces of the calf,
20 I will deliver into the hands of their enemies who want to kill them. Their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals.
21 "I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials into the hands of their enemies who want to kill them, to the army of the king of Babylon, which has withdrawn from you.
22 I am going to give the order, declares the LORD, and I will bring them back to this city. They will fight against it, take it and burn it down. And I will lay waste the towns of Judah so no one can live there."
