1 Palavra que falou Jeremias, o profeta, a Baruque, filho de Nerias, escrevendo ele aquelas palavras num livro, ditadas por Jeremias, no ano quarto de Jeoaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, dizendo: 2 Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel, acerca de ti, ó Baruque: 3 Disseste: Ai de mim agora! Porque me acrescentou o Senhor tristeza ao meu sofrimento; estou cansado do meu gemer e não acho descanso. 4 Assim lhe dirás: Isto diz o Senhor: Eis que estou demolindo o que edifiquei e arrancando o que plantei, e isto em toda a terra. 5 E procuras tu grandezas? Não as procures; porque eis que trarei mal sobre toda carne, diz o Senhor; a ti, porém, eu te darei a tua vida como despojo, em todo lugar para onde fores.

1 The word that Jeremiah the prophet spake unto Baruch the son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying, 2 Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, unto thee, O Baruch: 3 Thou didst say, Woe is me now! for Jehovah hath added sorrow to my pain; I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest. 4 Thus shalt thou say unto him, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, that which I have built will I break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up; and this in the whole land. 5 And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not; for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith Jehovah; but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest.

1 When Baruch son of Neriah wrote on a scroll the words Jeremiah the prophet dictated in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, Jeremiah said this to Baruch:

2 "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch:

3 You said, 'Woe to me! The LORD has added sorrow to my pain; I am worn out with groaning and find no rest.'

4 But the LORD has told me to say to you, 'This is what the LORD says: I will overthrow what I have built and uproot what I have planted, throughout the earth.

5 Should you then seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them. For I will bring disaster on all people, declares the LORD, but wherever you go I will let you escape with your life.'"
