1 O rei Belsazar deu um grande banquete a mil dos seus grandes e bebeu vinho na presença dos mil. 2 Enquanto Belsazar bebia e apreciava o vinho, mandou trazer os utensílios de ouro e de prata que Nabucodonosor, seu pai, tirara do templo, que estava em Jerusalém, para que neles bebessem o rei e os seus grandes, as suas mulheres e concubinas. 3 Então, trouxeram os utensílios de ouro, que foram tirados do templo da Casa de Deus que estava em Jerusalém, e beberam neles o rei, os seus grandes e as suas mulheres e concubinas. 4 Beberam o vinho e deram louvores aos deuses de ouro, de prata, de bronze, de ferro, de madeira e de pedra.
5 No mesmo instante, apareceram uns dedos de mão de homem e escreviam, defronte do candeeiro, na caiadura da parede do palácio real; e o rei via os dedos que estavam escrevendo. 6 Então, se mudou o semblante do rei, e os seus pensamentos o turbaram; as juntas dos seus lombos se relaxaram, e os seus joelhos batiam um no outro. 7 O rei ordenou, em voz alta, que se introduzissem os encantadores, os caldeus e os feiticeiros; falou o rei e disse aos sábios da Babilônia: Qualquer que ler esta escritura e me declarar a sua interpretação será vestido de púrpura, trará uma cadeia de ouro ao pescoço e será o terceiro no meu reino. 8 Então, entraram todos os sábios do rei; mas não puderam ler a escritura, nem fazer saber ao rei a sua interpretação. 9 Com isto, se perturbou muito o rei Belsazar, e mudou-se-lhe o semblante; e os seus grandes estavam sobressaltados.
10 A rainha-mãe, por causa do que havia acontecido ao rei e aos seus grandes, entrou na casa do banquete e disse: Ó rei, vive eternamente! Não te turbem os teus pensamentos, nem se mude o teu semblante. 11 Há no teu reino um homem que tem o espírito dos deuses santos; nos dias de teu pai, se achou nele luz, e inteligência, e sabedoria como a sabedoria dos deuses; teu pai, o rei Nabucodonosor, sim, teu pai, ó rei, o constituiu chefe dos magos, dos encantadores, dos caldeus e dos feiticeiros, 12 porquanto espírito excelente, conhecimento e inteligência, interpretação de sonhos, declaração de enigmas e solução de casos difíceis se acharam neste Daniel, a quem o rei pusera o nome de Beltessazar; chame-se, pois, a Daniel, e ele dará a interpretação.
13 Então, Daniel foi introduzido à presença do rei. Falou o rei e disse a Daniel: És tu aquele Daniel, dos cativos de Judá, que o rei, meu pai, trouxe de Judá? 14 Tenho ouvido dizer a teu respeito que o espírito dos deuses está em ti, e que em ti se acham luz, inteligência e excelente sabedoria. 15 Acabam de ser introduzidos à minha presença os sábios e os encantadores, para lerem esta escritura e me fazerem saber a sua interpretação; mas não puderam dar a interpretação destas palavras. 16 Eu, porém, tenho ouvido dizer de ti que podes dar interpretações e solucionar casos difíceis; agora, se puderes ler esta escritura e fazer-me saber a sua interpretação, serás vestido de púrpura, terás cadeia de ouro ao pescoço e serás o terceiro no meu reino.
17 Então, respondeu Daniel e disse na presença do rei: Os teus presentes fiquem contigo, e dá os teus prêmios a outrem; todavia, lerei ao rei a escritura e lhe farei saber a interpretação. 18 Ó rei! Deus, o Altíssimo, deu a Nabucodonosor, teu pai, o reino e grandeza, glória e majestade. 19 Por causa da grandeza que lhe deu, povos, nações e homens de todas as línguas tremiam e temiam diante dele; matava a quem queria e a quem queria deixava com vida; a quem queria exaltava e a quem queria abatia. 20 Quando, porém, o seu coração se elevou, e o seu espírito se tornou soberbo e arrogante, foi derribado do seu trono real, e passou dele a sua glória. 21 Foi expulso dentre os filhos dos homens, o seu coração foi feito semelhante ao dos animais, e a sua morada foi com os jumentos monteses; deram-lhe a comer erva como aos bois, e do orvalho do céu foi molhado o seu corpo, até que conheceu que Deus, o Altíssimo, tem domínio sobre o reino dos homens e a quem quer constitui sobre ele. 22 Tu, Belsazar, que és seu filho, não humilhaste o teu coração, ainda que sabias tudo isto. 23 E te levantaste contra o Senhor do céu, pois foram trazidos os utensílios da casa dele perante ti, e tu, e os teus grandes, e as tuas mulheres, e as tuas concubinas bebestes vinho neles; além disso, deste louvores aos deuses de prata, de ouro, de bronze, de ferro, de madeira e de pedra, que não veem, não ouvem, nem sabem; mas a Deus, em cuja mão está a tua vida e todos os teus caminhos, a ele não glorificaste.
24 Então, da parte dele foi enviada aquela mão que traçou esta escritura. 25 Esta, pois, é a escritura que se traçou: Mene, Mene, Tequel e Parsim. 26 Esta é a interpretação daquilo: Mene: Contou Deus o teu reino e deu cabo dele. 27 Tequel: Pesado foste na balança e achado em falta. 28 Peres: Dividido foi o teu reino e dado aos medos e aos persas.
29 Então, mandou Belsazar que vestissem Daniel de púrpura, e lhe pusessem cadeia de ouro ao pescoço, e proclamassem que passaria a ser o terceiro no governo do seu reino. 30 Naquela mesma noite, foi morto Belsazar, rei dos caldeus. 31 E Dario, o medo, com cerca de sessenta e dois anos, se apoderou do reino.
1 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his nobles, and drank wine before the thousand.
2 Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels that Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines, might drink in them.
3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines, drank in them.
4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
5 In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.
6 Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, and the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.
7 The king cried aloud to bring in the magicians, the Chaldeans, and the astrologers. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.
8 Then came in all the king's wise men, but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation.
9 Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his nobles were confounded.
10 -The queen, by reason of the words of the king and his nobles, came into the banquet-house. The queen spoke and said, O king, live for ever! let not thy thoughts trouble thee, neither let thy countenance be changed.
11 There is a man in thy kingdom in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods was found in him; and the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, {even} the king thy father, made him master of the scribes, magicians, Chaldeans, {and} astrologers;
12 forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and solving of problems, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.
13 Then was Daniel brought in before the king. The king spoke and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?
14 And I have heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and {that} light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.
15 And now the wise men, the magicians, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof; but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing.
16 But I have heard of thee, that thou canst give interpretations, and solve problems. Now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.
17 Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet will I read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
18 O thou king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father the kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and majesty;
19 and for the greatness that he gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew, and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he exalted, and whom he would he humbled.
20 But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit hardened unto presumption, he was deposed from the throne of his kingdom, and they took his glory from him;
21 and he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses; they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the Most High God ruleth over the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.
22 And thou, Belshazzar, his son, hast not humbled thy heart, although thou knewest all this;
23 but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of the heavens; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy nobles, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:
24 then from before him was sent the part of the hand, and this writing hath been written.
25 And this is the writing that is written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
26 This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE, God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it;
27 TEKEL, Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting;
28 PERES, Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.
29 Then Belshazzar commanded, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and {put} a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.
30 In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.
31 And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, {being} about sixty-two years old.

2 Belsazar, enquanto tomava o vinho, mandou que fossem trazidos os vasos de ouro e de prata, que seu pai Nabucodonozor havia tirado do templo que estava em Jerusalém; para que bebessem por eles o rei e seus grandes, suas mulheres e suas concubinas.
3 Então trouxeram os vasos de ouro que haviam sido tirados do templo da casa de Deus, que estava em Jerusalém, e por eles beberam o rei e seus grandes, suas mulheres e suas concubinas.
4 Bebiam vinho, e louvavam os deuses de ouro e de prata, de cobre, de ferro, de pau e de pedra.
5 Na mesma hora saíram os dedos de mão de homem, e escreveram defronte do candeeiro na caiadura da parede do palácio real. O rei via a parte da mão que escrevia.
6 Então o semblante do rei se mudou, e os seus pensamentos o perturbaram; as juntas dos seus lombos se relaxaram, e os seus joelhos batiam um no outro.
7 O rei chamou em alta voz, que se introduzissem os encantadores, os caldeus e os feiticeiros. Falou o rei e disse aos sábios de Babilônia: Qualquer que ler esta escritura, e me mostrar a sua interpretação, será vestido de púrpura, trará uma cadeia de ouro ao pescoço, e terá o terceiro lugar de poder no reino.
8 Então entraram todos os sábios do rei; porém não puderam ler a escritura, nem fazer saber ao rei a interpretação.
9 Nisto ficou o rei Belsazar muito perturbado, e se lhe mudou o semblante, e os seus grandes estavam perplexos.
10 Ora a rainha por causa das palavras do rei e dos seus grandes, entrou na casa de banquete; falou a rainha e disse: Ó rei, vive eternamente: não te perturbem os teus pensamentos, nem se mude o teu semblante.
11 No teu reino há um homem que tem em si o espírito dos deuses santos, e nos dias de teu pai se acharam nele luz e entendimento e sabedoria, como a sabedoria dos deuses; o rei Nabucodonozor, teu pai, o rei, digo, teu pai, fê-lo chefe dos mágicos, dos encantadores, dos caldeus e dos feiticeiros;
12 por quanto um espírito excelente, e conhecimento, e inteligência, interpretação de sonhos, declaração de enigmas, e solução de dúvidas, se acharam em Daniel, a quem o rei pôs o nome de Beltessazar. Seja chamado, pois, Daniel, e ele mostrará a interpretação.
13 Então foi Daniel introduzido à presença do rei. Falou o rei e disse a Daniel: És tu aquele Daniel, um dos filhos do cativeiro de Judá, que o rei meu pai trouxe de Judá?
14 Tenho ouvido a teu respeito que há em ti o espírito dos deuses, e que se acham em ti luz e inteligência e excelente sabedoria.
15 Agora mesmo foram introduzidos à minha presença os sábios, os encantadores, para que lessem esta escritura, e me fizessem saber a interpretação dela; porém não me puderam mostrar a interpretação da coisa.
16 Mas tenho ouvido a teu respeito que tu podes dar interpretações, e solver dúvidas. Se, pois, puderes ler a escritura e me fazer saber a interpretação dela, serás vestido de púrpura, trarás uma cadeia de ouro ao pescoço, e terás o terceiro lugar de poder no reino.
17 Então respondeu Daniel e disse na presença do rei: Sejam para ti as tuas dádivas, e dá a outrem os teus prêmios; contudo eu lerei ao rei a escritura, e lhe farei saber a interpretação.
18 O Altíssimo Deus, ó rei, deu a teu pai Nabucodonozor o reino e grandeza, e glória, e majestade;
19 e por causa da grandeza que lhe deu, todos os povos, nações e línguas tremiam e temiam diante dele: a quem queria, matava; e a quem ele queria, conservava em vida; a quem queria, exaltava; e a quem queria, abatia.
20 Quando, porém, o seu coração se elevou, e o seu espírito se endureceu, de sorte que se houve arrogantemente, foi ele deposto do seu trono real, e tiraram-lhe a sua glória;
21 e foi expulso dentre os filhos dos homens, o seu coração foi feito como o dos animais, e a sua morada era com os jumentos monteses; foi sustentado de feno como boi, e o seu corpo foi molhado do orvalho do céu, até que conheceu que o altíssimo Deus domina no reino dos homens, e a quem quiser constitui sobre ele.
22 Tu, Belsazar, que és seu filho, não humilhaste o teu coração, embora soubesses tudo isso;
23 porém te elevaste contra o Senhor do céu. Trouxeram perante ti os vasos da casa dele, e por eles bebestes vinho, tu e teus grandes, tuas mulheres e tuas concubinas; e louvaste os deuses de prata e de ouro, de cobre, de ferro, de pau e de pedra, que não vêem, nem ouvem, nem sabem; e ao Deus, em cuja mão está o teu fôlego, e de quem são todos os teus caminhos, a ele não glorificaste.
24 Então foi a parte da mão enviada de diante dele, e foi inscrita esta escritura.
25 Esta é a escritura que foi inscrita: MENE, MENE, TEQUEL, PARSIM.
26 Esta é a sua interpretação. MENE: Deus contou o teu reino, e o acabou.
27 TEQUEL: pesado na balança, e achado em falta.
28 PERES: está dividido o teu reino, e entregue aos medos e aos persas.
29 Então Belsazar deu as suas ordens: vestiram de púrpura a Daniel, e puseram-lhe ao pescoço uma cadeia de ouro, e fez-se uma proclamação a respeito dele, que tivesse o terceiro lugar de poder no reino.
30 Naquela noite foi morto Belsazar, rei caldeu.
31 Dario o medo recebeu o reino, tendo mais ou menos sessenta e dois anos de idade.
