1 Lança o teu pão sobre as águas, porque depois de muitos dias o acharás. 2 Reparte com sete e ainda com oito, porque não sabes que mal sobrevirá à terra. 3 Estando as nuvens cheias, derramam aguaceiro sobre a terra; caindo a árvore para o sul ou para o norte, no lugar em que cair, aí ficará. 4 Quem somente observa o vento nunca semeará, e o que olha para as nuvens nunca segará. 5 Assim como tu não sabes qual o caminho do vento, nem como se formam os ossos no ventre da mulher grávida, assim também não sabes as obras de Deus, que faz todas as coisas. 6 Semeia pela manhã a tua semente e à tarde não repouses a mão, porque não sabes qual prosperará; se esta, se aquela ou se ambas igualmente serão boas. 7 Doce é a luz, e agradável aos olhos, ver o sol. 8 Ainda que o homem viva muitos anos, regozije-se em todos eles; contudo, deve lembrar-se de que há dias de trevas, porque serão muitos. Tudo quanto sucede é vaidade.

9 Alegra-te, jovem, na tua juventude, e recreie-se o teu coração nos dias da tua mocidade; anda pelos caminhos que satisfazem ao teu coração e agradam aos teus olhos; sabe, porém, que de todas estas coisas Deus te pedirá contas. 10 Afasta, pois, do teu coração o desgosto e remove da tua carne a dor, porque a juventude e a primavera da vida são vaidade.

1 Cast thy bread upon the waters; for thou shalt find it after many days.

2 Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.

3 If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth; and if a tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be.

4 He that observeth the wind will not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds will not reap.

5 As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, how the bones {grow} in the womb of her that is with child, even so thou knowest not the work of God who maketh all.

6 In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thy hand; for thou knowest not which shall prosper, whether this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.

7 Now the light is sweet, and pleasant is it to the eyes to see the sun;

8 but if a man live many years, {and} rejoice in them all, yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many: all that cometh is vanity.

9 Rejoice, young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thy heart, and in the sight of thine eyes; but know that for all these {things} God will bring thee into judgment.

10 Then remove discontent from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh; for childhood and youth are vanity.

3 Se as nuvens estiverem cheias de chuva, derramam-na sobre a terra; e se a árvore cair para o sul, ou para o norte, no lugar em que cair, aí ficará.

4 Quem observa o vento, não semeará; e quem atenta para as nuvens, não ceifará.

5 Como tu não sabes qual seja o caminho do vento, nem de que maneira se formam os ossos no ventre da mulher grávida; assim não conheces as obras de Deus que tudo faz.

6 Semeia de manhã a tua semente, e de tarde não deixes repousar a tua mão; pois não sabes qual das duas prosperará, se esta ou aquela, ou se ambas serão igualmente boas.

7 Na verdade a luz é doce, e agradável é aos olhos ver o sol.

8 Se, pois, o homem viver muitos anos, regozije-se em todos eles; contudo lembre-se dos dias das trevas, porque hão de ser muitos. Tudo o que há de vir, é vaidade.

9 Regozija-te, mancebo, na tua mocidade; anime-te o teu coração nos dias da tua mocidade, e anda pelo caminho do teu coração e pela vista dos teus olhos; mas sabe que por todas estas coisas Deus te trará a juízo.

10 Portanto afasta do teu coração o desgosto, e alonga da tua carne o mal, pois a mocidade e a flor dos anos são vaidade.
