1 Pelo que, deixando os rudimentos da doutrina de Cristo, prossigamos até a perfeição, não lançando de novo o fundamento do arrependimento de obras mortas e de fé em Deus, 2 e da doutrina dos batismos, e da imposição das mãos, e da ressurreição dos mortos, e do juízo eterno. 3 E isso faremos, se Deus o permitir.

4 Porque é impossível que os que já uma vez foram iluminados, e provaram o dom celestial, e se fizeram participantes do Espírito Santo, 5 e provaram a boa palavra de Deus e as virtudes do século futuro, 6 e recaíram sejam outra vez renovados para arrependimento; pois assim, quanto a eles, de novo crucificam o Filho de Deus e o expõem ao vitupério. 7 Porque a terra que embebe a chuva que muitas vezes cai sobre ela e produz erva proveitosa para aqueles por quem é lavrada recebe a bênção de Deus; 8 mas a que produz espinhos e abrolhos é reprovada e perto está da maldição; o seu fim é ser queimada.

9 Mas de vós, ó amados, esperamos coisas melhores e coisas que acompanham a salvação, ainda que assim falamos. 10 Porque Deus não é injusto para se esquecer da vossa obra e do trabalho de amor que, para com o seu nome, mostrastes, enquanto servistes aos santos e ainda servis. 11 Mas desejamos que cada um de vós mostre o mesmo cuidado até ao fim, para completa certeza da esperança; 12 para que vos não façais negligentes, mas sejais imitadores dos que, pela fé e paciência, herdam as promessas.

13 Porque, quando Deus fez a promessa a Abraão, como não tinha outro maior por quem jurasse, jurou por si mesmo, 14 dizendo: Certamente, abençoando, te abençoarei e, multiplicando, te multiplicarei. 15 E assim, esperando com paciência, alcançou a promessa. 16 Porque os homens certamente juram por alguém superior a eles, e o juramento para confirmação é, para eles, o fim de toda contenda. 17 Pelo que, querendo Deus mostrar mais abundantemente a imutabilidade do seu conselho aos herdeiros da promessa, se interpôs com juramento, 18 para que por duas coisas imutáveis, nas quais é impossível que Deus minta, tenhamos a firme consolação, nós, os que pomos o nosso refúgio em reter a esperança proposta; 19 a qual temos como âncora da alma segura e firme e que penetra até ao interior do véu, 20 onde Jesus, nosso precursor, entrou por nós, feito eternamente sumo sacerdote, segundo a ordem de Melquisedeque.

1 Therefore, leaving behind the elementary teachings about Christ, let us continue to be carried along to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, faith toward God,2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.3 And this we will do, if God permits.4 For it is impossible to keep on restoring to repentance time and again people who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have become sharers of the Holy Spirit,5 who have tasted the goodness of God's word and the powers of the coming age,6 and who have fallen away, as long as they continue to crucify to themselves the Son of God and to expose him to public ridicule.7 For when the ground soaks up rain that often falls on it and continues producing vegetation useful to those for whom it is cultivated, it receives a blessing from God.8 However, if it continues to produce thorns and thistles, it is worthless and in danger of being cursed, and in the end will be burned.9 Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case, things that point to salvation.10 For God is not so unjust as to forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have ministered to the saints and continue to minister to them.11 But we want each of you to continue to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to give full assurance to your hope.12 Then, instead of being lazy, you will become imitators of those who are inheriting the promises through faith and patience.13 For when God made his promise to Abraham, he swore an oath by himself, since he had no one greater to swear by.14 He said, "I will certainly bless you and give you many descendants."15 And so he obtained the promise, because he patiently waited for it.16 For people swear by someone greater than themselves, and an oath given as confirmation puts an end to all argument.17 In the same way, when God wanted to make the unchangeable character of his purpose perfectly clear to the heirs of his promise, he guaranteed it with an oath,18 so that by these two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to prove false, we who have taken refuge in him might have a strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us.19 We have this hope as an anchor for our souls, firm and secure, which reaches behind the curtain,20 where Jesus, our forerunner, has gone on our behalf, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
