1 Ora, também o primeiro tinha ordenanças de culto divino e um santuário terrestre. 2 Porque um tabernáculo estava preparado, o primeiro, em que havia o candeeiro, e a mesa, e os pães da proposição; ao que se chama o Santuário. 3 Mas, depois do segundo véu, estava o tabernáculo que se chama o Santo dos Santos, 4 que tinha o incensário de ouro e a arca do concerto, coberta de ouro toda em redor, em que estava um vaso de ouro, que continha o maná, e a vara de Arão, que tinha florescido, e as tábuas do concerto; 5 e sobre a arca, os querubins da glória, que faziam sombra no propiciatório; das quais coisas não falaremos agora particularmente.

6 Ora, estando essas coisas assim preparadas, a todo o tempo entravam os sacerdotes no primeiro tabernáculo, cumprindo os serviços; 7 mas, no segundo, só o sumo sacerdote, uma vez no ano, não sem sangue, que oferecia por si mesmo e pelas culpas do povo; 8 dando nisso a entender o Espírito Santo que ainda o caminho do Santuário não estava descoberto, enquanto se conservava em pé o primeiro tabernáculo, 9 que é uma alegoria para o tempo presente, em que se oferecem dons e sacrifícios que, quanto à consciência, não podem aperfeiçoar aquele que faz o serviço, 10 consistindo somente em manjares, e bebidas, e várias abluções e justificações da carne, impostas até ao tempo da correção.

11 Mas, vindo Cristo, o sumo sacerdote dos bens futuros, por um maior e mais perfeito tabernáculo, não feito por mãos, isto é, não desta criação, 12 nem por sangue de bodes e bezerros, mas por seu próprio sangue, entrou uma vez no santuário, havendo efetuado uma eterna redenção. 13 Porque, se o sangue dos touros e bodes e a cinza de uma novilha, esparzida sobre os imundos, os santificam, quanto à purificação da carne, 14 quanto mais o sangue de Cristo, que, pelo Espírito eterno, se ofereceu a si mesmo imaculado a Deus, purificará a vossa consciência das obras mortas, para servirdes ao Deus vivo?

15 E, por isso, é Mediador de um novo testamento, para que, intervindo a morte para remissão das transgressões que havia debaixo do primeiro testamento, os chamados recebam a promessa da herança eterna. 16 Porque, onde há testamento, necessário é que intervenha a morte do testador. 17 Porque um testamento tem força onde houve morte; ou terá ele algum valor enquanto o testador vive? 18 Pelo que também o primeiro não foi consagrado sem sangue; 19 porque, havendo Moisés anunciado a todo o povo todos os mandamentos segundo a lei, tomou o sangue dos bezerros e dos bodes, com água, lã purpúrea e hissopo, e aspergiu tanto o mesmo livro como todo o povo, 20 dizendo: Este é o sangue do testamento que Deus vos tem mandado. 21 E semelhantemente aspergiu com sangue o tabernáculo e todos os vasos do ministério. 22 E quase todas as coisas, segundo a lei, se purificam com sangue; e sem derramamento de sangue não há remissão.

23 De sorte que era bem necessário que as figuras das coisas que estão no céu assim se purificassem; mas as próprias coisas celestiais, com sacrifícios melhores do que estes. 24 Porque Cristo não entrou num santuário feito por mãos, figura do verdadeiro, porém no mesmo céu, para agora comparecer, por nós, perante a face de Deus; 25 nem também para a si mesmo se oferecer muitas vezes, como o sumo sacerdote cada ano entra no Santuário com sangue alheio. 26 Doutra maneira, necessário lhe fora padecer muitas vezes desde a fundação do mundo; mas, agora, na consumação dos séculos, uma vez se manifestou, para aniquilar o pecado pelo sacrifício de si mesmo. 27 E, como aos homens está ordenado morrerem uma vez, vindo, depois disso, o juízo, 28 assim também Cristo, oferecendo-se uma vez, para tirar os pecados de muitos, aparecerá segunda vez, sem pecado, aos que o esperam para a salvação.

1 Now even first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary.2 For a tabernacle was set up, and in the first part were the lampstand, the table, and the bread of the Presence. This was called the Holy Place.3 Behind the second curtain was the part of the tabernacle called the Holy of Holies,4 which had the gold altar for incense and the ark of the covenant completely covered with gold. In it were the gold jar holding the manna, Aaron's staff that had budded, and the tablets of the covenant.5 Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the place of atonement. (We cannot discuss these things in detail now.)6 When everything had been arranged like this, the priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle to perform their duties.7 But only the high priest went into the second part, and then only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins committed by the people in ignorance.8 The Holy Spirit was indicating by this that the way into the Holy of Holies had not yet been disclosed as long as the first part of the tabernacle was still standing.9 This is an illustration of the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered could not make the conscience of the worshiper perfect,10 since they deal only with food, drink, and various washings, which are required for the body until the time when things would be set right.11 But when Christ came as a high priest of the good things that have come, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that was not made by human hands and that is not a part of this creation.12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with his own blood he went into the Holy of Holies once for all and secured our eternal redemption.13 For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are unclean purifies them with physical cleansing,14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works so that we may serve the living God!15 This is why he is the mediator of a new covenant; so that those who are called may receive the eternal inheritance promised them, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the offenses committed under the first covenant.16 For where there is a will, the death of the one who made it must be established.17 For a will is in force only when somebody has died, since it never takes effect as long as the one who made it is alive.18 This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood.19 For after every commandment in the law had been spoken to all the people by Moses, he took the blood of calves and goats, together with some water, scarlet wool, and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people,20 saying, "This is the blood of the covenant that God ordained for you."21 In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in worship.22 In fact, under the law almost everything is cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of the blood there is no forgiveness.23 Thus it was necessary for the copies of the things in heaven to be cleansed by these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.24 For Christ did not go into a sanctuary made by human hands and just a copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in God's presence on our behalf.25 Nor did he go into heaven to sacrifice himself again and again, the way the high priest goes into the Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own.26 Then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But now, at the end of the ages, he has appeared once for all to remove sin by his sacrifice.27 Indeed, just as people are appointed to die once and after that to be judged,28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people. And he will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly wait for him.
