1 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled the house of Judah and Benjamin, a hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, that were warriors, to fight against Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam. 2 But the word of Jehovah came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying, 3 Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying, 4 Thus saith Jehovah, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house; for this thing is of me. So they hearkened unto the words of Jehovah, and returned from going against Jeroboam.
5 And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem, and built cities for defence in Judah. 6 He built Beth-lehem, and Etam, and Tekoa, 7 And Beth-zur, and Soco, and Adullam, 8 and Gath, and Mareshah, and Ziph, 9 and Adoraim, and Lachish, and Azekah, 10 and Zorah, and Aijalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin, fortified cities. 11 And he fortified the strongholds, and put captains in them, and stores of victuals, and oil and wine. 12 And in every city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong. And Judah and Benjamin belonged to him.
13 And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel resorted to him out of all their border. 14 For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: for Jeroboam and his sons cast them off, that they should not execute the priest’s office unto Jehovah; 15 and he appointed him priests for the high places, and for the he-goats, and for the calves which he had made. 16 And after them, out of all the tribes of Israel, such as set their hearts to seek Jehovah, the God of Israel, came to Jerusalem to sacrifice unto Jehovah, the God of their fathers. 17 So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years; for they walked three years in the way of David and Solomon.
18 And Rehoboam took him a wife, Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David, and of Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse; 19 and she bare him sons: Jeush, and Shemariah, and Zaham. 20 And after her he took Maacah the daughter of Absalom; and she bare him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith. 21 And Rehoboam loved Maacah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines (for he took eighteen wives, and threescore concubines, and begat twenty and eight sons and threescore daughters). 22 And Rehoboam appointed Abijah the son of Maacah to be chief, even the prince among his brethren; for he was minded to make him king. 23 And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his sons throughout all the lands of Judah and Benjamin, unto every fortified city: and he gave them victuals in abundance. And he sought for them many wives.
1 Roboamo adunque essendo giunto in Gerusalemme, raunò la casa di Giuda e di Beniamino in numero di centottantamila uomini di guerra scelti, per combattere contro ad Israele, per ridurre il regno sotto l’ubbidienza di Roboamo.
2 Ma la parola del Signore fu indirizzata a Semaia, uomo di Dio, dicendo:
3 Di’ a Roboamo, figliuolo di Salomone, re di Giuda, ed a tutti gl’Israeliti, che sono in Giuda ed in Beniamino:
4 Così ha detto il Signore: Non salite, e non combattete contro a’ vostri fratelli; ritornatevene ciascuno a casa sua; perciocchè questa cosa è proceduta da me. Ed essi ubbidirono alle parole del Signore, e se ne ritornarono, senza andare contro a Geroboamo.
5 E ROBOAMO abitò in Gerusalemme, ed edificò delle città in Giuda per fortezze.
6 Ed edificò Bet-lehem, ed Etam, e Tecoa,
7 e Bet-sur, e Soco, ed Adullam,
8 e Gat, e Maresa, e Zif,
9 ed Adoraim, e Lachis, ed Azeca,
10 e Sora, ed Aialon, ed Hebron, ch’erano città forti in Giuda ed in Beniamino.
11 Così fortificò queste fortezze, e vi mise de’ capitani, e de’ magazzini di vittuaglia, e d’olio e di vino.
12 E in ciascuna città mise degli scudi e delle lance; e le fortificò grandemente. Così Giuda e Beniamino furono a lui
13 Or i sacerdoti ed i Leviti ch’erano in tutto il paese d’Israele si ridussero appresso di lui da tutte le lor contrade.
14 Perciocchè i Leviti lasciarono i lor contadi, e le lor possessioni, ed andarono in Giuda ed in Gerusalemme; perciocchè Geroboamo ed i suoi figliuoli li scacciarono, acciocchè non esercitassero più il sacerdozio al Signore.
15 E Geroboamo si costituì de’ sacerdoti per gli alti luoghi, e per li demoni, e per li vitelli ch’egli fece.
16 E, dopo que’ Leviti, quelli d’infra tutte le tribù d’Israele che disposero l’animo loro a cercare il Signore Iddio d’Israele, vennero in Gerusalemme, per sacrificare al Signore Iddio de’ lor padri;
17 e fortificarono il regno di Giuda, e rinforzarono Roboamo, figliuolo di Salomone, per lo spazio di tre anni; perciocchè camminarono nella via di Davide e di Salomone, lo spazio di tre anni.
18 Or Roboamo si prese per moglie Mahalat, figliuola di Ierimot, figliuolo di Davide, ed Abihail, figliuola di Eliab, figliuolo d’Isai;
19 la quale gli partorì questi figliuoli, cioè: Ieus, e Semaria, e Zaham.
20 E, dopo lei, prese Maaca, figliuola di Absalom, la quale gli partorì Abia, ed Attai, e Ziza, e Selomit.
21 E Roboamo amò Maaca, figliuola di Absalom, sopra tutte le sue altre mogli e concubine; conciossiachè egli avesse prese diciotto mogli, e sessanta concubine; onde generò ventotto figliuoli, e sessanta figliuole.
22 E Roboamo costituì Abia, figliuolo di Maaca, per capo della sua casa, per principe sopra i suoi fratelli; perciocchè intendeva di farlo re.
23 E prudentemente si avvisò di dispergere tutti i suoi figliuoli per tutte le contrade di Giuda e di Beniamino, per tutte le città forti; ed assegnò loro da vivere abbondantemente, e procacciò loro molte mogli
