1 Corinthians 14

1 Follow after love; yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. 2 For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhortation, and consolation. 4 He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. 5 Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. 6 But now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching? 7 Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they give not a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? 8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain voice, who shall prepare himself for war? 9 So also ye, unless ye utter by the tongue speech easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking into the air. 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and no kind is without signification. 11 If then I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a barbarian unto me. 12 So also ye, since ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may abound unto the edifying of the church. 13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 16 Else if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that filleth the place of the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he knoweth not what thou sayest? 17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. 18 I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all: 19 howbeit in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20 Brethren, be not children in mind: yet in malice be ye babes, but in mind be men. 21 In the law it is written, By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers will I speak unto this people; and not even thus will they hear me, saith the Lord. 22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to the unbelieving: but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to them that believe. 23 If therefore the whole church be assembled together and all speak with tongues, and there come in men unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad? 24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one unbelieving or unlearned, he is reproved by all, he is judged by all; 25 the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.

26 What is it then, brethren? When ye come together, each one hath a psalm, hath a teaching, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. 27 If any man speaketh in a tongue, let it be by two, or at the most three, and that in turn; and let one interpret: 28 but if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. 29 And let the prophets speak by two or three, and let the others discern. 30 But if a revelation be made to another sitting by, let the first keep silence. 31 For ye all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted; 32 and the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets; 33 for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace.

As in all the churches of the saints, 34 let the women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as also saith the law. 35 And if they would learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home: for it is shameful for a woman to speak in the church. 36 What? was it from you that the word of God went forth? or came it unto you alone?

37 If any man thinketh himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him take knowledge of the things which I write unto you, that they are the commandment of the Lord. 38 But if any man is ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39 Wherefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. 40 But let all things be done decently and in order.

1 Etudiez-vous donc à la charité; désirez aussi avec ardeur les dons spirituels, mais surtout celui de prophétiser.

2 Car celui qui parle une langue inconnue, ne parle pas aux hommes, mais à Dieu, puisque personne ne l’entend et qu’il prononce des mystères en son esprit.

3 Mais celui qui prophétise, édifie, exhorte et console les hommes par ses paroles.

4 Celui qui parle une langue inconnue, s’édifie soi-même; mais celui qui prophétise, édifie l’Eglise.

5 Je souhaite bien que vous parliez tous diverses langues; mais je souhaite encore plus que vous prophétisiez; car celui qui prophétise est préférable à celui qui parle des langues étrangères, à moins qu’il ne les interprète, afin que l’Eglise en reçoive de l’édification.

6 En effet, mes frères, si je venais parmi vous en parlant des langues inconnues, à quoi vous serais-je utile, si je ne vous faisais pas entendre par la révélation, par la connaissance, par la prophétie, ou par l’instruction, ce que je vous dirais?

7 Il en est comme des choses inanimées qui rendent un son, soit une flûte, soit une harpe. Si elles ne forment point des tons distincts, comment connaîtra-t-on ce qui est joué sur la flûte ou sur la harpe?

8 Et si la trompette ne rend qu’un son confus, qui est-ce qui se préparera au combat?

9 De même, si les paroles que vous prononcez dans votre langue ne sont pas entendues, comment saura-t-on ce que vous dites? car vous parlerez en l’air.

10 Combien de sortes de mots n’y a-t-il pas dans le monde? Et y en a-t-il aucun qui ne signifie quelque chose?

11 Si donc je ne sais ce que ces mots signifient, je serai barbare pour celui qui parle, et celui qui parle sera barbare pour moi.

12 Ainsi, puisque vous désirez avec ardeur les dons spirituels, cherchez à en avoir abondamment pour l’édification de l’Eglise.

13 C’est pourquoi, que celui qui parle une langue inconnue, prie en sorte qu’il interprète ce qu’il dit.

14 Car, si je prie dans une langue inconnue, mon esprit prie, mais l’intelligence que j’en ai est sans fruit.

15 Que ferai-je donc? Je prierai dans mon esprit, mais je prierai aussi d’une manière qu’on m’entende. Je chanterai dans mon esprit, mais je chanterai aussi d’une manière qu’on m’entende.

16 Autrement, si tu bénis Dieu seulement en esprit, comment celui qui est du simple peuple répondra-t-il Amen à ton action de grâces, puisqu’il n’entend pas ce que tu dis?

17 Il est vrai que tes actions de grâces sont bonnes; mais un autre n’en est pas édifié.

18 Je rends grâces à mon Dieu, de ce que je parle plus de langues que vous tous;

19 Mais j’aimerais mieux prononcer dans l’Eglise cinq paroles en me faisant entendre, afin d’instruire ainsi les autres, que dix mille paroles dans une langue inconnue.

20 Mes frères, ne soyez pas des enfants en intelligence; mais soyez des enfants à l’égard de la malice; et pour ce qui est de l’intelligence, soyez des hommes faits.

21 Il est écrit dans la loi: Je parlerai à ce peuple par des gens d’une autre langue, et par des lèvres étrangères, de sorte qu’ils ne m’entendront point, dit le Seigneur.

22 C’est pourquoi les langues étrangères sont un signe, non pour ceux qui croient, mais pour les infidèles; au lieu que la prophétie est un signe, non pour les infidèles, mais pour ceux qui croient.

23 Si donc toute l’Eglise est assemblée en un même lieu, et que tous parlent des langues étrangères, et que des gens du commun peuple, ou des infidèles y entrent, ne diront-ils pas que vous avez perdu le sens?

24 Mais si tous prophétisent, et qu’il y entre quelque infidèle, ou quelqu’un du commun peuple, il sera convaincu par tous, il sera jugé par tous.

25 Et ainsi les secrets de son cœur seront manifestés, de sorte qu’il se prosternera la face en terre, il adorera Dieu, et il publiera que Dieu est véritablement parmi vous.

26 Que faut-il donc faire, mes frères? Lorsque vous vous assemblez, quelqu’un de vous a-t-il un cantique, a-t-il une instruction, a-t-il à parler une langue étrangère, a-t-il une révélation, a-t-il une interprétation? Que tout se fasse pour l’édification.

27 S’il y en a qui parlent une langue inconnue, qu’il n’y en ait que deux ou trois, au plus, qui parlent, et cela l’un après l’autre; et qu’il y en ait un qui interprète.

28 Que s’il n’y a point d’interprète, que celui qui parte se taise dans l’Eglise, et qu’il parle à lui-même et à Dieu.

29 Qu’il n’y ait aussi que deux ou trois prophètes qui parlent, et que les autres en jugent.

30 Et si un autre de ceux qui sont assis, a une révélation, que le premier se taise.

31 Car vous pouvez tous prophétiser l’un après l’autre, afin que tous apprennent, et que tous soient exhortés.

32 Et les esprits des prophètes sont soumis aux prophètes;

33 Car Dieu n’est point un Dieu de confusion, mais un Dieu de paix, comme on le voit dans toutes les Eglises des saints.

34 Que vos femmes se taisent dans les Eglises, parce qu’il ne leur est pas permis d’y parler; mais elles doivent être soumises, comme aussi la loi le dit.

35 Que si elles veulent s’instruire sur quelque chose, qu’elles interrogent leurs maris dans la maison; car il n’est pas bienséant aux femmes de parler dans l’Eglise.

36 Est-ce de vous que la parole de Dieu est venue, ou n’est-elle parvenue qu’à vous seuls?

37 Si quelqu’un croit être prophète, ou spirituel, qu’il reconnaisse que les choses que je vous écris sont des commandements du Seigneur.

38 Et si quelqu’un le veut ignorer, qu’il l’ignore.

39 C’est pourquoi, mes frères, désirez avec ardeur de prophétiser, et n’empêchez point de parler les langues étrangères.

40 Que toutes choses se fassent avec bienséance et avec ordre.
